I hope everyone is keeping safe and well. We have enjoyed another busy week in school with very mixed weather, it’s not quite made its mind up this week! If however your child is in school, please remember to apply sun cream before coming into school.

You will have received a letter this week outlining our position in terms of inviting other year groups into school before the end of term. Whilst we desperately want every child back in school learning every day, due to the government safety measures in place at this current time, it is simply not possible in terms of the physical size of the building and the number of rooms we have. We also have some staff that are still required to stay at home shielding themselves or others that they live with, which has meant needing those staff that are available to return to school, to work in years groups other than their own across the school. Most staff are working in school now teaching either small groups of Year 1, Reception or in our Community Classrooms. They are also ensuring that there is home learning supplied every day for those families that have chosen to remain at home or for those pupils that are not eligible to return at this time.

We have decided however that whilst we do not have the capacity to invite more pupils on site every day, we would like to give every pupil the opportunity to come into school for at least one morning in July to touch base with their friends,

staff and in some cases meet their new teacher for September. The letter emailed to you has further details and will require a response by Tuesday 23rd June, via text or email to the office, to say whether or not you would like your child to come in for a session. Your speedy responses will allow us to begin putting a timetable together with the staff in readiness and to organise the dates.

Our BRIDGES focus for next week is ‘Self Discipline’ which comprises of nine dispositions: organisation, prudence, hard work and absorption, motivation and independence, revising, practising and self regulation.

It can appreciate that for many pupils you have now been working and learning independently since the end of March and to do this successfully like many of you have, it has taken an enormous amount of self discipline. Many of you will have found new routines each day to ensure you are organised and know what you need for each part of your learning, many of you will have had to get used to working more independently without your teachers or friends around you to discuss your learning with. I know from conversations with lots of your teachers that some of you have found this very easy and some of you less so. When being organised and independent has been more challenging it is even more important that you continue to try hard every day and continue to practise getting better at using your self discipline dispositions.

I am very proud of all our students and scholars, and how hard you are working – please keep this going as it will really help when we can have

you all back in school learning every day.

Lovely Learning in school As you can see this week there has been lots of gardening activities going on in school and harvesting of some of the plants and vegetables that have been growing throughout the spring.

Year 1 have been digging for potatoes this week and were also very excited to find a bird’s nest amongst the potato bags!

Some of our Community Classroom pupils took part in some gardening activities, harvesting lavender from the school gardens. The pupils cut the lavender from the stalks, bunched them together and dried them by hanging them upside down around the classroom. The pupils really enjoyed the activity and remarked how beautiful the aroma of the lavender was.

Thank you Ms Willcox for organising this activity!

Dear Parents and Carers,Next week, we have decided to enter a friendly mathematics competition from Monday 22nd June to Friday 26th June. The competition is via Time Tables Rockstars (TTRS), which is a platform that the school uses to help children develop their fluency and understanding of their times tables, and will be against other schools across London. Please note that the competition takes place between the hours 14:00 and 19:00 and any answers after these mentioned times will not add to your child’s score. For every answer your child answers correctly, they will earn their class a point. Finally, prizes and certificates will be awarded providing the school is successful. If you have any queries or questions regarding the competition, please contact your class teacher via their info email addresses, which are located on the home learning page of the school website. Let the games commence.Best Wishes Mr Crosby

BRIDGES in the Primary Phase“We build too many walls and not enough bridges.”

Isaac Newton

BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner.

There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be in-troduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certifi-cate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week.

Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel below.

At School • We would all like to see the children develop the habits listed above, as they are all

essential lifelong skills that are needed for us to successfully manage our way through school, college, and university and certainly throughout our work careers. It is really important that whilst the children are young that we help them develop these habits as quickly as possible – especially organisation, independence and hard work.

• At school we ensure the pupils understand that every action has a consequence and that when we work hard it can often reap satisfaction and reward. Our pupils work hard day to day to earn their merits for making good choices and demonstrate their efforts.

• To help the children understand the structure of each day and become better organised, we always start with a visual timetable in Reception. A picture represents each part of the day; this helps the children to understand the daily routines.

• It is important that that we teach the young people to become more organised and check that they have all of their belongings with them each day.

At Home • At home the children need to practise getting dressed and undressed, managing

buttons on shirts and coats etc. and generally become more independent. Helping your child to get organised the night before will help to ensure they have everything they need for their day. It may help to create a visual/pictorial timetable at home to help your child become more organised and to think about when they need their PE kit, home learning, guided reading book etc. This could be displayed in your child’s room or in a central place like the kitchen where you can both check what is needed the night before, ready for the following day. This will allow your child to become more involved in preparing for their learning each day and gaining independence. It is also good to remind your child, as we do in school, to check regularly that they have all of the belongings with them.

• Congratulate your child’s effort when you see them working hard and for showing an increased motivation with their home learning or reading. Talk to your child about how your own effort to practise and work hard at something led to success and a good feeling of achievement.

Safeguarding ChildrenAs part of their curriculum, the children learn how to keep themselves safe. The following website has been set up by the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) to offer parents and schools advice on how to raise safeguarding awareness with children. There is a notable section called ‘The Underwear Rule’ which is of particular support and guidance to parents. The website also offers advice regarding ‘online safety’ and how to obtain support or advice regarding the safeguarding of children.
