Dear Parents,It’s amazing how our city can change so much in a matter of weeks. Only recently, I was cycling in the dark, with multiple layers of clothing to protect me from the sub-zero temperatures. Although it is still far from tropical, the daffodils are out, the temperature is much more bearable and it is light in the mornings. Yes, spring is here and this signals the start of a very busy season for us here at school. We have school camps coming up for children in years 4, 5 and 6 and, for the first time, year 3. When I think back to my own school days, sadly, lots of learning has been forgotten but each one of the camps I attended and the associated learning are all etched into my memory forever as real emotional learning experiences. I know the children will love the camps we have lined up for them this year – they will find out more about each other and more about themselves too.

This month, our Year 5 and 6 children will be Walking for Water. This is an opportunity for them to experience what many children in Third World countries go through, having to walk six kilometers carrying water for their family. The children have had an introductory talk from the Walking for Water foundation and will set off on 22nd March on their walk around the dunes here, carrying their packs of water. This sort of physical experience will hopefully leave a lasting impression on them as they empathise with other children who are not as fortunate as themselves. For more information, go to http://www.walkingforwater.eu/ We also have the theatre group, Shakespeare for Kidz (S4K) coming in to work with our Year 5 and 6 children – letters to those parents have already been sent home. We have worked with S4K before and found it a most rewarding experience. For the whole primary school, we also have World Book Week in April, and the visit of a very famous children’s author. For parents, we will try to arrange an evening where you are invited to school so that we can share some very important and recent research into how your child’s brain functions and learns.Added to all of this, we are also in recruitment season, where we try to find the very best teachers out there to come here and work with your children. We have been very successful in assembling a high quality team in recent years so hopefully we will be able to do this again. I will write to you later in the year to inform you of any changes in the teaching team next year.

On a different note, I would like to offer my congratulations to our Secondary Principal, Peter Kotrc, on his appointment as Director of Berlin-Brandenburg International School, effective August 2012. It has been a pleasure working alongside Peter for the past five years and we have shared many happy moments together. I wish him well in his new position. The recruitment process for Peter’s successor has already begun.

Finally, a reminder to parents whose children have been issued with a gate pass. This does not allow them to come back into school and visit the canteen, unless you are with them. It is important that we know who is in the building at any one time. If we have a fire alarm, we must know which children we need to look for to evacuate and which ones have already left the building. Please remind your child that their gate pass means that they can leave school on their own but then they must go straight home. Gate passes are only issued to children in year 3 and above.

Best wishes,

Graeme Scott

Mother Tongue NewsDear parents,Mother tongue within the curriculum:In Y4-6 the children have been introduced to their new MT project. We will build an international historical timeline. The children will have to look for , write about and share information with us on 3 areas: one historical figure of my country, one famous construction of my country and one famous event from my country. To start with they will need to discuss with you about people from your country that are famous all over the world. That could be a famous writer, musician, explorer, scientist, politician, … that has marked or will mark history. They will then make an A5 presentation about that person for our timeline following a specific format. We hope that you will enjoy sharing your knowledge on your country’s history through these discussions with your children! After School MT: Please look at the updated calendar and note the classes dates as well as the make-up class dates:

Kind regards,Pascale Hertay, Deputy Head, [email protected]

Primary NewsYear 3 IPC topic – Chocolate!Year 3 IPC – Chocolate Science experimentsDuring our chocolate topic, Year 3 have been doing a lot of Science experiments. Last week, we looked at the effect chocolate has on our teeth. First we all brushed our teeth. Next we ate either a piece of apple, a piece of chocolate or a crisp. We then ate a plaque disclosing tablet which made our teeth go pink where there was dirt (plaque) on them. We then compared the colour of our teeth to see which food was the worst for our teeth. Of course, we found out chocolate was the worst for your teeth and the apple was the best. This means we should not each too much chocolate and should make sure we brush our teeth carefully too. This week we tested the melting point of chocolate and looked at which type of chocolate melted first. Which do you think melts the quickest – milk chocolate, white chocolate or plain chocolate?

Finding a Piece of Home in School - EALFinding a piece of home in school, is it possible? Yes, it is!Since the beginning of the year the children and the teachers of the ISH have been working very hard on our “Bring a piece of Home into School’- project.A sense of belonging is essential for everyone’s well-being; ‘All children need to go to school and find a little piece of home in it’ (E. Hamayan, ECIS ESL/ Mother Tongue Conference in Dusseldorf 2010)Inspired by the quote above we decided that we had to realise this in our school as well. You are very welcome to come and have a look at the results. There are beautiful pieces of Art hanging up in the staircases. Hopefully you can find a piece of home in the staircase as well...The concierges are working very hard in between lessons to hang them all up, as they all need to be drilled into the wall. Thank you to everyone who made this project come alive!I hope you enjoy our very own Art Gallery! Best Wishes, Miss Lara Rikers (EAL Coordinator and Y1 EAL Teacher) If you are interested in finding out more about EAL at ISH, come and have a look at our Blog: http://isheal1.blogspot.com/ Also for great EAL Action pictures!

Dear Parents,

It’s that time of year again when World Book Day is fast approaching! Each year, on April 23rd, UNESCO commemorates this symbolic date, (the day on which, in 1616, Cervantes, Shakespeare and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega all died), by paying tribute to books and authors, and encouraging everyone everywhere to discover and enjoy the pleasures of reading. For this reason, it is an important date in our school calendar.

This year, our annual reading competition, the 2 RD 4TNITE, will begin on Thursday 5th April and run in the two weeks preceding World Book Day. On Monday 23rd April, we will be hosting a series of small events at school to draw attention to the importance of books and reading, and on Tuesday 24th April we will be visited by well-known UK children’s author Jeremy Strong.

A letter has gone home today in Years 1 to 6 listing some of Jeremy Strong’s most recent titles, by age group, which we would like to order on your behalf if you should wish to purchase any. The day of his visit promises to be a memorable experience for the children and, depending on how many books are ordered, we hope to either have them signed in person or have a signed bookplate inserted. In the mean time, there are many Jeremy Strong books in our library that the children can borrow to familiarise themselves with his stories.

If you would like your son or daughter to own any of his books, please complete the order form by ticking up to a maximum of two books per child and return it to school, with the correct money in a sealed envelope, no later than Friday 23rd March 2012. The envelope should be given to either your child’s Class Teacher or Miss Sue in the Library.

Please support us to promote books and reading by encouraging your child to read, read and then read some more!

Many thanksTessa OakleyLanguage Arts Coordinator

Primary NewsLibrary newsEncouraging Your Child’s Reading for Pleasure: Our school library catalogue online and the iMLS AppAs mentioned in the previous newsletter, the Primary Library has provided access to your child’s Junior Librarian account. You can use this in case you are curious about:

➢ What has my child borrowed from the library?➢ When is it due back?➢ What has my child been reading in the past?➢ Are there recommendations for my child’s next book?➢ Are there any news from the library for my child’s year group?

It is now possible to find out about all these questions if you either connect to Junior Librarian at https://u009807.microlibrarian.net or downloading the Apple or Android app called iMLS (which stands for Micro Librarian Systems, the makers of Junior Librarian).

When asked the user name, you need to enter your child’s library number. Most children already know their number by heart and the youngest ones have this number printed on their library bookmarks. Their password is their birth date written in the following format DDMMYYYY (or 31122000 for 31 December 2000). While using the app for the first time, you are asked to choose the SITE and if you enter our school’s post code 2554, the name of the school should appear. If you have questions or difficulties with the access please email us at [email protected] or stop by the Primary Library.

We are particularly excited about the new feature called ‘Who Next’ which recommends new books and authors based on the books that your child has already read. You will be able to use this feature at home to help your child select their next book.

We hope you try this out soon and let us know how you like it.

Sincerely, Izabella TomljanovichHead Librarian

was funny”, says Paris Rubin, 6M. The museum was very hands on and had lots of interesting things to see, including you could be in-side of a bubble, turn cogs, and watch 3D movies! I'm pretty sure that year 6 had a great time.

Recently the pri-mary year 6 students have taken a trip to the NEMO mu-seum in Amster-dam

In the Inter-national school of the Hague all of year 6 went on a trip. They went to the NEMO sci-ence museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands. They went by bus for about 45 minutes to an hour because the museum was in Amsterdam and they left from the Hague. They started their trip at around 8:30am on Thurs-

day the 23rd of February. When they arrived at the museum it was nearly 9:20. Year 6 went for their IPC topic, ”The Physi-cal world”. “I liked it because everything was fun to try out”. Says Maria Fallenius, 6M (A Class in year 6.) During their tour in the museum their was a show called chain reaction. It started at 12:00 and was 15-20 minutes long. “I liked the chain reaction show because it

Primary News Health NewsSpring time is almost upon us as we look forward to another wonderful tulip season! Beautiful weather, however, brings about more favourable conditions for the not so popular head lice. It seems an almost inexhaustible list of interventions have been tried by many schools in efforts to eradicate head lice in the school setting. A recent review of the literature inquiring into effective school practices has revealed several things. It has demonstrated that education and support of families in detecting and treating head lice is the most effective way of preventing and disrupting the transmission of head lice. It revealed the combination of both wet combing (for detection and treatment) and pediculocides (the conditioner like treatment applied to hair) were more effective in killing head lice than either of them used alone. Favorable mention of environmental interventions, such as clothing bags, used to disrupt transmission was made, although rated slightly lower in their ability to eradicate lice. The ISH will implement strategies related to all three findings in the goal of eradicating lice in the school. Blue clothing bags will be provided to the Year 2 through 6 primary classrooms whereby the students will be instructed to keep their jackets/sweaters in during the school day. This will also help keep our hallways safe and accessible as well. Information related to head lice will be posted in the “Health Corner” on the school website to help inform parents and caregivers. Additionally we will continue to notify parents of the outbreaks in the classrooms. With your support, we hope this collective approach to the management of head lice in our school will achieve a lice free environment. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.

Emotions and ExpectationsTalk by Katherine Fortier BA, MASc (Child and Educational Psychologist)Emotions and ExpectationsAs parents we know that acceptance and unconditional love are key to our children’s healthy self-esteem and thus to their ability to make the best of whatever challenges they may face. Yet in the real world we also acknowledge that our own feelings, hopes, dreams, and emotions sometimes get in the way. Whether it’s frustration or disappointment, anxiety or worry, we have to cope with our own feelings on top of those of our children. For kids with learning challenges or differences, sometimes their educational future can look unclear and we wonder what’s realistic and how best to steer them, especially as they approach the later senior school/high school years. We’ll discuss these important issues and make room for our own feelings as parents.Date: Tuesday 8th MayTime: 19:30- 21:30Location: BSN VOORSCHOTEN:Jan van Hooflaan 3, 2252 BG, VoorschotenCosts: 20,- per person or 25,- per couple
