The MFL Team

Our team of experts offer an award-winning service that is delivered by experienced Foreign Language Tutors (FLTs) with native level language skills, who are recruited and trained by a dedicated team of Advisory Teachers. For over a decade, Liverpool has been at the forefront of Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) in primary schools, delivering MFL teaching via a vibrant and highly trained team.

Our team of 22 Foreign Language tutors is trained by four Advisory teachers with extensive backgrounds in teaching French and Spanish. The FLT team is made up of native level speakers who come from a range of countries across the globe.

Jane Halsall Senior School Improvement Officer

Jane has an extensive background in language teaching and has been instrumental in developing the service over the last 13 years, and ensuring its continued success. A team of highly experienced advisory teachers support Jane by visiting schools regularly to observe and feedback to tutors and to provide demonstrations of best practice.

What Are My School’s Responsibilities?

£3,350 based on 1.5 hours a week per year £1,150 per year for each additional hour

• It is expected that a member of staff is present during thelanguage lesson to support the FLT and to improve theirown knowledge of language and methodology

• Schools should allow the FLTs to attend 5 training daysprovided by the MFL Team during the course of theacademic year.

The Annual Service Agreement can be offered to all primary schools, irrespective of school status. Teaching is provided on a weekly basis and paid for annually.

Modern Foreign Languages Quality Mark

The Languages Quality Mark rewards primary schools which demonstrate excellent practice in key areas, such as strong subject leadership, excellence in teaching and learning, assessment which informs future practice and high profile of languages within an international context. It celebrates and rewards the achievements in Foreign Language provision and recognises best practice.

The award will enable primary schools to evaluate, develop and celebrate their achievements in Foreign Language provision. This will guide schools towards achieving the National requirements as set out in the Programme of Study for KS2.

This programme will require schools to provide an application and supporting documentary evidence, with a half day visit from the Liverpool Primary MFL team to evaluate all aspects of MFL provision. Successful schools will be awarded a plaque and certificate for display and logo for letterheads.

Primary Languages Quality Mark is valid for three years. In addition to this, we offer a Gold Quality Mark, which is available for schools who go ‘above and beyond’ the requirements of the Quality Mark.

Modern Foreign Languages Upskilling Course

This course provides MFL subject leaders with the necessary skills and subject knowledge to lead MFL effectively in their school. The sessions are designed to provide both language upskilling and MFL methodology. Whilst it is expected that participants will have a basic working knowledge of French or Spanish, the course can be tailored to suit the language level of potential participants.

The course will enable subject leaders to guide their school towards meeting the requirements of the KS2 MFL Programmes of Study. Subject leaders will gain confidence in their subject knowledge, will develop a deeper understanding of best practice in MFL methodology and will gain a good range of practical teaching activities to take back to school and disseminate to staff.

Participants will receive a certificate confirming their successful completion of the course. Evidence required in order to achieve the award will include:

• Completion of an activity log detailing attendance and content covered

• Reflection on new practices introduced in school, and evaluation of their

impact

• A practical assignment in the form of a short teaching demonstration

The course comprises a half day introduction followed by 5 twilight sessions, one

to take place at the start of each half term. Each session will include methodology

for use in the classroom and language upskilling. Candidates will have the

opportunity to develop their own ability in French or Spanish whilst also gaining

the skills to deliver language learning effectively at KS2. Content will include:

• Input on vocabulary and grammar in either French or Spanish

• A study of the process of acquiring a foreign language

• Practical ideas on delivery of language activities

MFL Primary Subject Leader Briefings

Termly twilight sessions to provide national and local updates and further develop the role of the Subject Leader.

These lively sessions not only provide insight into current MFL thinking, but also include some practical ideas for delivering MFL in the classroom. Examples are given in both French and Spanish. The theme for each meeting will be released closer to the date and aims to respond to changing needs and requirements of schools.

Programmes of Support

This session would be collaborative with the school and follow the agreed programme and involves analysis of MFL policy and action plans, scrutiny of pupil work and audit of MFL competence amongst staff.

This programme of support will include identification of areas for development, development of subject action plans and support with introducing or evaluating the use of assessment.

This programme, agreed with SLT, provides support packages for individual teachers to improve quality of teaching in MFL, areas for development and recommendations on how to fulfil the new requirements for MFL.

A programme that encompasses training for all staff, phases or cohorts related to National and local developments and priorities which comprise of language and whole school focus, and bespoke language upskilling.

This programme, agreed with SLT, will include development of effective assessment tools, useful assessment information for transition to secondary and monitoring and evaluation of the impact of assessment tools.

The programme will focus on collaborative planning, development of teaching and learning strategies to address identified priorities as well as opportunities to share good practice between schools.

Our multi-national team comes from a range of countries, including: France, Morocco, Sénégal, Spain, Peru, Columbia and Mexico. They all have two things in common - they have all found a home from home in Liverpool and they all have a passion for teaching languages.

We believe that an early start, provided by a native level speaker, lays firm foundations for successful language learning. Lessons are dynamic and interactive and set in a cultural context. We hope to instil young learners with a love of languages and a curiosity about the wider world which will remain with them through life.
