British citizen: A person who is a member of
the UK and has rights here,
either because they were born
here or because they have
been given rights.
The real test asks about history, the Royal
Family and life in the UK in general.
Starter: Can you pass the UK citizenship test?
What do you think of the
questions in this test? Were
they easy or hard? Did you
know a test like this
existed? The questions you just saw were taken from
The Life in the UK Test. Adults have to pass
this test if they want to become a British
citizen.

The path to citizenship…
What do you think of
the path to citizenship?
Was it different to what
you suggested?
In real life, adults can apply to be a British citizen if they have lived here for five years,
if their parents are British or if they have married a British person. They must also:
Show they will
follow the laws of the country.
Pass an English
language test.
Pass ‘The Life in the UK’ –test, which you saw a
sneak peek of earlier!
Citizenship: Being a member
of a particular
country and
having rights
because of it.

On the next three slides you will
meet three people with different
stories. Discuss how their life might
change if they have their British
citizenship taken away. Decide if
you think this is fair. The questions in
grey will help.
Rights: Things that by law,
people are allowed to
have or are entitled to.
Is it fair to take citizenship away?
If a person’s citizenship is taken away, that person can no longer live here. They will no longer have the
rights that other British citizens have, like being able to vote, or working and earning money here.
The government is
allowed to take
someone’s citizenship
away. We will tell you when they are allowed
to do this later.

• It is up to the government to keep us
safe. If they think someone might be
dangerous to others, they should be
able to take away that person’s
citizenship so that they can’t live
here.
• Citizenship comes with a
responsibility to be a good person
and follow certain rules. If you break
these rules, it is fair for there to be
consequences.
• The government can only take away
citizenship if the person has
somewhere else to go.

away citizenship? No

• People make mistakes and should
face consequences for them, but I
think taking away someone’s
citizenship is too extreme.
• It is unfair to tell someone that they
can no longer live here when they
feel like this country is their home.
• Everyone should be treated the
same whether they have two
citizenships or one. It is unfair that
someone with only one citizenship
wouldn’t have it taken away.
