Said “it wasn’t me!”

when really it was!

Said you’d done all

your work when really

you hadn’t.

Starter: Have you ever…?

Raise your hand if…

(3 mins)

Read each statement

as a group and raise

your hand if it’s

something you’ve

done before!Told a lie to protect

your friend (or

brother/sister!).

Pretended to be

asleep when you were

actually awake.

Pretended you liked

something so you didn’t

hurt someone’s feelings.

Are all lies bad?

©VotesForSchools2020

Why are we talking about this?

Discuss (1-2 mins)

Do you know what a white lie is? How is it

different to other lies?

A white lie is a small, harmless lie

that you might tell, maybe to be

polite or so you don’t hurt

someone’s feelings.

We all do it sometimes, but is it

ok to tell lies? Or do they always

cause trouble? This is what we’ll

be thinking about today.

©VotesForSchools2020

Find the white lie

Discuss (3-6 mins)

Have a look at some different

examples of lies, are any of them ok

to say? For each one, put you thumb

up if you think it’s ok or put you thumb

down if you think it’s not. Be ready to

explain your reasons why!

I think this is ok!

I think this isn’t ok!

©VotesForSchools2020

Find the white lie

You’re bored so you tell your

little sister that there’s a

monster hiding in her

cupboard to scare her.

I think this is

ok!

I think this is not

ok!

Your friend got a new haircut.

He asks you what you think and

you say it looks nice, even

though you think it looks really

bad!

©VotesForSchools2020

Find the white lie

You tell your teacher that your dog

ate your homework, when really

you just didn’t do it!

Your grandma has bought

you a doll for Christmas. You

don’t really like dolls

anymore, but you tell her

that you love it.

I think this is

ok!

I think this is not

ok!

©VotesForSchools2020

Find the white lie

You accidentally broke your mum’s

favourite vase! You don’t want to

get in trouble, so you tell your mum

that your little brother broke it.

Your cousin is having a birthday

party, but you really don’t want

to go, so you tell him you’re busy

that day (even though you’re

not).

I think this is not

ok!

I think this is

ok!

Find the white lie

Reflect (2-3 mins)

In general, did you mostly think the

lies were OK or not ok? Are there

certain times or situations when you

think it is ok to lie? Why/why not?

©VotesForSchools2020

Is honesty the best policy?

Discuss (4-8 mins)

On the next few slides, you’ll see different

situations where these kids aren’t sure whether

to lie or not. Read each situation and decide

what you think they should do. You can use the

suggestions to help you!

She could…

He should...

Why not…?

©VotesForSchools2020

Is honesty the best policy?

What should he

do?Tell his aunt he prefers other

sports to football.

Keep accepting the gifts he

never uses.

Tell her that her gifts are

rubbish.

Jack’s aunt once got him a

football for his birthday and, to be

polite, Jack said he loved it! Now

his aunt always buys him football

gear, even though he doesn’t

actually like football so never uses

it, so really it’s a waste of money.

©VotesForSchools2020

Is honesty the best policy?

What should

he do?

Julius’s sister has got some new

glasses. She thinks they’re really

cool, but he thinks they look a bit

stupid. Some kids at school have

started laughing at her. This

embarrasses Julius, but she

doesn’t seem to care.

Tell her he thinks she looks great.

Tell her that he thinks she should try

another pair.

Ignore what other people are saying

and just be glad she’s happy.

©VotesForSchools2020

Is honesty the best policy?

What should

she say?

Chara has had a really bad day

at school as some kids in her class

were really mean to her. When

she gets home, her dad asks her

how her day was. She knows her

dad has been stressed and

doesn’t want to worry him.

Tell her dad about the bullies so he

can speak to the teacher.

Lie and say that it was fine, so he

doesn’t worry.

Say nothing and go straight to her

room.

©VotesForSchools2020

Is honesty the best policy?

What should

she do?

It’s Leah’s birthday and her

best friend made her a cake!

But it’s a chocolate cake and

Leah really doesn’t like

chocolate.

Eat the cake and pretend you like

it.

Thank her for the cake but tell her

that you don’t like chocolate.

Get angry at her for forgetting

you don’t like chocolate.

©VotesForSchools2020

Is it OK?

Discuss (4-8 mins)

Some pupils on the next three slides

can’t agree on whether they think

it’s ok to lie or not! Working with a

partner, read both statements on

each slide and decide who you

agree with and why.

©VotesForSchools2020

Is it OK?

“It’s ok to tell a white lie if you’re

saving someone’s feelings.”

“Lies always cause problems, even

when you don’t mean them to.”

©VotesForSchools2020

Is it OK?

“I wouldn’t like it if one of

my friends lied to me.”

“If my friends were trying to

protect my feelings, I’d be ok

with them lying to me.”

©VotesForSchools2020

Is it OK?

“Everyone tells lies

sometimes. It’s normal.”

“Honesty is always the best

policy.”

©VotesForSchools2020

• Lies almost always cause more

problem when they solve.

• It’s always better to be honest.

• Lies can hurt people, even

when you don’t mean them

to.

• I wouldn’t like to be lied to.

Are all lies bad?

Yes No

• It’s ok to lie if you’re protecting

someone’s feelings.

• It’s ok to lie if it gets you out of

trouble.

• Everyone tells small lies, it’s

normal.

• I don’t mind if people lie to

me.

Create! (10-15 mins)

Working with a partner,

create a story about

someone who lied.

Extension: A tall tale!

This is … he/she lied

about…because…

This meant they got

to…

But then to cover the

first lie, they had to…

In the end, they…Extension

If you have time, create a storyboard

which shows what happened!
