When you choose the Heart Center at Primary Chil-

dren’s Hospital in Salt Lake City, you are choosing one

of the best pediatric heart centers in the nation—a

center that combines clinical excellence, cutting-edge

innovation, and compassionate care.

Our Heart Center has more than 40 highly-skilled Uni-

versity of Utah School of Medicine physicians working

tirelessly to treat all types of heart conditions—from

fetal diagnosis to adults with congenital heart dis-

ease. Our physicians are supported by more than 300

staff members including physician assistants, nurse

practitioners, nurses, cardiac sonographers, perfu-

sionists, respiratory therapists, social workers, genetic

counselors, child life specialists, and more.

We look to innovation—through both technology

and the development of progressive programs—to

better serve patients and continually improve care

and outcomes. Our patient-centered approach re-

moves the traditional walls between departments

and specialties to focus on the patient as a whole,

and improve the experience through all stages of

treatment.

We strive to be a center of excellence where ideas

are freely shared, outcomes are continually im-

proved, and highly personalized care is delivered to

each patient and family.

Clinicians in the Heart Center are leveraging 3D print-

ing to create models of complex patient hearts before

surgery. This technology is used when other imaging

modalities can’t provide enough detail for complex

anatomy. This innovative approach allows cardiologists

and surgeons to get an in depth look before making

the first incision.

Norwood is one of the most complex and

difficult heart surgeries in children. We have

some of the best survival outcomes in the

country and get families out of the hospital

sooner. This puts less stress on the family, im-

proves care, and lowers costs.

We participate in the Pediatric Cardiac Criti-

cal Care Consortium (PC4). This collaboration

works to improve the quality of care and out-

comes for congenital heart disease. Data rep-

resents outcomes from 25 Children’s hospitals

across the country.

Research plays a vital role in offering innovative care

for complex conditions. In 2016, more than 50 re-

search papers were published by our clinicians. Our

scope of services give us the unique ability to partic-

ipate in nearly any kind of study on heart disease.

In addition, our research efforts are enhanced by

our unique ability to utilize the Utah Population Da-

tabase (UPD) – the only database of its kind in the

United States. This database provides in-depth demo-

graphic information to support research on genetics,

epidemiology, demography, and public health. Our

center participates in basic science, translational, and

clinical research.

overall hospital experience from the patient’s

perspective. We strive to create a healing en-

vironment that supports patients and families

through the stresses that illness can cause. Pri-

mary Children’s Hospital utilizes medical social

workers, child life specialists, therapists, spir-

itual advisors, and more than 900 volunteers

to engage patients and family members with

therapeutic activities, positive distractions, and

social support. Our family-centered approach

promotes physical, emotional, and spiritual

healing.
