Learning with CPPEThe Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) offers a wide range of learning opportunities in a variety of formats for pharmacy professionals from all sectors of practice. We are funded by Health Education England to offer continuing professional development for all pharmacists and pharmacy technicians providing NHS services in England. For further information about our learning portfolio, visit: www.cppe.ac.uk

We recognise that people have different levels of knowledge and not every CPPE programme is suitable for every pharmacist or pharmacy technician. We have created three categories of learning to cater for these differing needs:

Core learning (limited expectation of prior knowledge)

Application of knowledge (assumes prior learning)

Supporting specialties (CPPE may not be the provider and will direct you to other appropriate learning providers).

This is a 2 learning programme and assumes that you already have some knowledge of the topic area.

Continuing professional developmentYou can use this programme to support your continuing professional development (CPD). Consider what your learning needs are in this area. You can record your CPD online by visiting: www.mygphc.org

Keeping up to dateTo ensure this learning resource is up to date we will review it every year. A CPPE programme manager will check through the material to ensure the content is current and relevant, and that the quality of the learning experience is maintained. You will find the latest version of this resource on the CPPE website.

FeedbackWe hope you find this learning resource useful for your practice. Please help us to assess its value and effectiveness by completing the feedback form at your event, or by emailing us at: [email protected]

About this CPPE workshop resourceThe aim of this two-day workshop is to support pharmacy professionals to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to carry out effective communication and consultations, and to introduce basic history-taking and clinical assessment skills.

There are three parts to this CPPE workshop resource, all of which must be completed in order to achieve the learning objectives:

n this pre-workshop book, which may include reading, information searches and tasks that you need to complete before you attend the workshop

n the workshop itself, which is focused on the knowledge, skills and behaviours which will help you manage and optimise care for patients

n post-workshop activities and assessment to help you develop your competence and capability in clinical assessment skills.

This book gets you started. It provides key information and tasks to help you meet the learning objectives, but it also encourages you to identify your own learning needs. It then challenges you to relate what you have learnt to your own practice and professional development. We have included tasks to stimulate your thinking and we will refer to these again at the workshop, so please ensure you complete them in advance.

We estimate it will take you up to three hours to complete the tasks in this book.

A note about web links

Where we think it will be helpful we have provided web links to take you directly to an article or specific part of a website. However, we are aware that web links can change. If you have difficulty accessing any web links we provide, please go to the organisation’s home page or your preferred internet search engine and use appropriate key words to search for the relevant item.

Learning objectivesYou can use our programmes to support you in building the evidence that you need for the different competency frameworks that apply across your career. These will include building evidence for your Foundation pharmacy framework (FPF) and supporting your progression through the membership stages of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Faculty.

As you work through the programme consider which competencies you are meeting and the level at which you meet these. What extra steps could you take to extend your learning in these key areas?

After completing all aspects of this programme you should be able to:

n apply key skills to communicate effectively

n implement key skills, models and techniques that support a person-centred approach to consultations

n describe considerations that should be made when undertaking consultations with older people, children and young adults, people with learning disabilities and their carers

n critique your own consultation practice and that of your peers using a reflective tool

n demonstrate a greater confidence in delivering a person-centred approach to the consultation

n practise taking a clinical history

n identify red flags when taking a history

n demonstrate the principles of hygiene and handwashing

n display a range of clinical examination skills appropriate to your role

n recognise the presentation of sepsis in primary care.

Task 1 – Consultation modelsConsultation models can be used as part of your consultation toolkit to help structure your consultations and embed person-centred approaches. If you are not familiar with the concept of consultation models then download the Consultation skills for pharmacy practice: taking a patient-centred approach distance learning programme, available at: www.cppe.ac.uk/programmes/l/consult-p-02

Section 3 in the distance learning programme introduces four consultation skills models, read this section focusing on the Calgary-Cambridge and Neighbour models. Make notes on the two models below and consider the pros and cons of applying each in your role.

If you are familiar with the concept of consultation models and you already apply them in practice, completing this task will act as a refresher to prepare for one of the activities in the workshop.

Benefits of applying models to a consultation:

How might applying models such as these to a consultation cause a barrier to discussion?

Task 2 – What standard is expected of me?The Consultation skills for pharmacy practice: practice standards for England outline the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected of you in your consultations.

Download the standards from Step 2 of the Consultation Skills for Pharmacy Practice website: www.consultationskillsforpharmacy.com

Take a look at the standards and think about what they mean to you in your practice. Which of these standards do you think are more important in your current or future role? Which of these do you feel that you demonstrate well and which do you think are more of a challenge for you?

Task 3 – SepsisSepsis is a potentially life-threatening condition and it is important that all healthcare professionals are aware of the red flags and symptoms of sepsis.

Complete the online e-learning module Sepsis in primary care. There are five separate sections for this e-learning module and it can be accessed on the e-learning for Healthcare website (eLfH) via the CPPE website: www.cppe.ac.uk/programmes/l/leaders-e-00

If you have difficulty accessing this programme, type ‘sepsis’ into the search box at the top of the page, click on Sepsis (SEP) and then choose Sepsis in primary care.

We estimate that it will take you approximately one hour to complete this task.

Task 4 – Measuring blood pressureDownload the Blood Pressure Measurement video from British Hypertension Society website which describes how to take a manual blood pressure measurement: https://bihsoc.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/May-Measurement-Month-How-to-take-a-manual-blood-pressure-measurement-English-Subtitles-v2.mp4

You can listen to some BP sounds by accessing the tutorial video clips at the bottom of the page. Make a note of the BP based on the sounds you hear and compare your answers to the tutorial answers available on the web page: https://bihsoc.org/resources/bp-measurement/bp-measurement-auscultatory-tutorials/

Peer support

To get the most out of the workshop, you will need to practise examination skills on each other. If it is appropriate for you and you are comfortable to consent to this, please bring along a short-sleeved shirt or a camisole vest to wear on the second day so that your colleagues can practise taking blood pressure readings. You will be asked to sign a consent form.
