What Parents/Carers Can Do

Starter 1 (spelling)

Starter 2 (handwriting – Michael Phelps facts)

He is sometimes called by the nickname MP or The Baltimore Bullet. Michael eats around 12,000 calories of food every day. That's a lot of food! He received a $1M bonus from Speedo for winning at least 7 gold medals in one Olympics. At 15 years, 9 months he was the youngest male to break a world record in swimming

Starter 3 (spelling)

Starter 4 (handwriting – Simone Biles facts)

Simone Biles, (born March 14, 1997, Columbus, Ohio, U.S.) is an American gymnast who is considered one of the sport’s greatest athletes. At the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, she became the first female U.S. gymnast to win four gold medals at a single Games, and she was the first gymnast to win three consecutive world all-around titles (2013–15).

How to support: Try to test them on their spelling words a few times in the week. Checking over what has been done. Encourage a neat, joined script for handwriting.

With a grown up, revise the use of apostrophes. You could look here for help with apostrophes in contractions and here for help with possessive apostrophes. Then complete the punctuation activity, “Steffi Fights Back” in this pack to check you know where to put apostrophes. If you are not sure, you can check there answers here.

Do this part independently Look at the three discussion prompt cards included in this pack. They are all discussion starters related to football. Take some time alone to think about them. You may want to do some research online or take some notes to help gather your thoughts. Think about what points you might make or questions you may ask if there are things you are not sure about.

Look at the first line of the comic strip attached with a grown up. Make sure you understand the idea behind the comic strip. The Numskulls live inside Ed’s head and control his actions – just like in the film Inside Out. This task is going to rely on your INFERENCE skills. If you are not sure what that means, look here.

No new writing task. Character shoe task from last week is not due in until the end of this week.

How to support: Help your child to decide on the main activity they would like to do before you start work on the warm up activity. All these introductory activities ideally require discussion with someone. This could be an older sibling, parent or other person in the household. Try to support your child by extending their thinking and discussion through questioning.

Now, you have a choice or punctuation and grammar tasks, both sports themed.

If you have a printer, complete a sports themed mystery game. You have to use your spelling, punctuation and grammar skills to solve “The Trouble of the Tangled Trainers”. The answers are at the back so no peeking until you’re finished!

If you don’t have a printer, you could access this page and complete the work in your jotter. Answers are available here.

Do this part with an adult or arrange to call other P7(s) to complete it as a

group. Make sure you have permission from a grown up to do this.

Now have the discussion. Think about

• Making sure everyone is involved equally in the discussion.

• Making sure you ask open questions to keep the discussion going.

• Being polite to all participants and if you disagree, do so respectfully.

• Building on the ideas of the person who spoke before you.

You are going to look for clues in the comic strip to fill in text which would make sense. Look at what comes before and after. Look at the facial expressions. Think about other comments the character has made. You might not come up with an idea which is exactly the same as the original, but your idea should make sense with the text / pictures which are already there. Make sure you read it through a few times to check what you are adding fits in.

No new writing task. Character shoe task from last week is not due in until the end of this week.

How to support: Ideally your child works quite independently on this part. Give them support as needed and where necessary help them stay on task. These activities can be worked on for about 45 mins at a time and could take two or even three sessions to complete depending on your child.

Check your answers and self assess. Talk with a grown-up about how you got on. What aspects did you understand well and what do you need to revise.

Now complete some self-assessment by looking at the “I can…” statements under the prompt cards and colouring then in traffic light colours. Explain to an adult why you have chosen the colours.

When you think you are finished, share your work with an adult and ask them if they think your text makes sense with the pictures. The original will be available on the website and Teams for you to look at when you are finished.
