Theme: Walking and Eating

Few things are enjoyable as walking and eating; few are as ordinary and com-

monplace. The English philosopher Bertrand Russell loved to walk. Some of his

deepest thoughts came as the result of his walking the streets of London around

Hyde Park. Russell would bring a pencil and some paper in order to write down

a thought or insight which seemed to just “float up” during a brisk walk. Walk-

ing and thinking seems to go together. Often, when we set out on walk with

problems we return home with a solution. Walking seems to clear the brain and

helps focus on vision.

Few human activities are as enjoyable and enlightening as eating. We humans

eat while the other animals feed (though at times we too feed). The preparation

and sharing of a meal are more than a biological necessity. Eating is not simply

putting calories into the furnace so work can be done. Eating, the sharing of a

meal and its preparation, have deep meaning and symbolic importance. The

food tastes better when prepared with love and shared by friends. We are nour-

ished in the spirit as well as the body. The sharing of a meal allows us to share

ourselves with others. Maybe our fragmented eating habits have contributed to

the wall of silence that has been erected by so many families. Eating is one of

those humanly sacramental moments when we reveal some deep things about . ( Continued on page 3)

Tema: Caminar y Comer

Pocas cosas son agradables como caminar y comer; Pocos son tan comunes y

comunes. El filósofo inglés Bertrand Russel le encantaba caminar. Algunos de

sus pensamientos más profundos fueron el resultado de su paseo por las calles

de Londres alrededor de Hyde Park. Russel traería un lápiz y un papel con el fin

de anotar un pensamiento o una percepción que parecía simplemente "flotar"

durante un paseo enérgico. Caminar y pensar parece ir juntos. A menudo, cuan-

do salimos a caminar con problemas volvemos a casa con una solución. Caminar

parece despejar el cerebro y ayuda a concentrarse en la visión.

Pocas actividades humanas son tan agradables e iluminadoras como comer. Los

seres humanos comemos mientras los otros animales se alimentan (aunque a

veces también nos alimentamos). La preparación y el compartir de una comida

son más que una necesidad biológica. Oriente no es simplemente poner calorías

en el horno para que el trabajo se puede hacer. Comer, compartir una comida y

su preparación tiene un significado profundo y una importancia simbólica. La

comida sabe mejor cuando está preparado con amor y compartido por amigos.

Nos nutre tanto en el espíritu como en el cuerpo. El compartir una comida nos

permite compartir con otros. Tal vez nuestros hábitos alimentarios fragmentados

han contribuido al muro de silencio que ha sido erigido por tantas familias. Co-

mer es uno de esos momentos humanamente sacramentales cuando revelamos

algunas cosas profundas sobre nosotros mismos.

Tema: Caminar y comer

Nuestra historia del evangelio en este tercer domingo de Pascua

es una joya para capturar el significado espiritual de caminar y

comer. Dos discípulos están en el camino de Emaús. Tienen un

problema: ponen todas sus esperanzas en Jesús, y ahora todo lo

que tienen son sueños destrozados. Jesús fue entregado a los líde-

res y ejecutado. Han pasado tres días y todavía no hay palabra del

Señor. Todo lo que tienen es una tumba vacía, algunos informes

salvajes de las mujeres, y un informe de algunos discípulos que

no vieron el cuerpo de Jesús en la tumba.

Estos dos discípulos eran realistas y pragmáticos. ¿Cómo podían

haber sido insensatos? ¿Cómo podían esperar y creer tanto?

¿Cómo podrían haber renunciado tanto? El extraño que viaja con

ellos también cree que son necios, pero por una razón diferente.

¡Qué poco sentido tiene! Cuán lento es creer todo lo que los pro-

fetas han anunciado ". Los discípulos también están absortos en

su pérdida y en la desesperada esperanza de que no recuerden lo

que Jesús enseñó.

Sin embargo, todavía hay un elemento de hospitalidad y esperan-

za en sus corazones. Ellos presionan al extraño para que se quede

con ellos. Y esta oferta de hospitalidad es su salvación. El extraño

se queda con ellos y comparte una comida.

La caminata debe terminar. Es tiempo de descansar y renovarse.

No vivimos de pan solo y tampoco vivimos sin pan. Los extraños

toman el pan y dan gracias. Es en el compartir de la comida que

"sus ojos se abrieron y lo reconocieron; Con lo cual se desvane-

ció de su vista ". El rompimiento del pan y el dar gracias es la

manera en que recordamos al Señor hasta que vuelva. Jesús se

desvanece, pero permanece. "¿No ardían en nosotros nuestros

corazones mientras hablaba con nosotros en el camino ..." Enton-

ces los discípulos salieron y proclamaron la historia de Pascua.

"El Señor ha resucitado. Es verdad".

La historia del camino a Emaús es la historia de cada cristiano. Es

en nuestro camino hacia el Señor, con todas nuestras dudas y

temores, que podemos encontrar al extraño que abrirá nuestros

ojos e inflamará nuestros corazones. Cuando nuestros ojos se

abran también nosotros debemos salir y proclamar: "El Señor ha

resucitado. Es verdad ." Esta es una buena noticia, el kerygma.

Barbara Weir sobre cómo la imagen de Nuestra Señora de

Guadalupe está ligada a la Teología del Cuerpo ya la anti-

gua cultura azteca / mexicana. El evento comenzará a las

6:30 PM con música y confesión, seguido por Misa a las 7

PM. La Cena y la charla seguirán.

Theme: Walking and Eating

ourselves. Our gospel story on this third Sunday of Easter is

a gem for capturing the spiritual significance of walking and

eating. Two disciples are on the road to Emmaus. They have

a problem: they placed all their hopes in Jesus, and now all

they have is shattered dreams. Jesus was handed over to the

leaders and put to death. It has been three days and still no

word from the Lord. All they have is an empty tomb, some

wild reports from the women, and a report from some disci-

ples who did not see Jesus’ body in the tomb.

These two disciples were realists and pragmatists. How

could they have been foolish? How could they hoped and

believed so much? How could they have given up so much?

The stranger who travels with them also believes they are

foolish, but for a different reason. “What little sense you

have! How slow you are to believe all that the prophets have

announced.” The disciples are also self-absorbed in their loss

and dashed hopes that they fail to remember what Jesus

taught.

Yet there is still an element of hospitality and hope within

their hearts. They press the stranger to stay with them. And

this offer of hospitality is their salvation. The stranger stays

with them and shares a meal.

The walking (journey) must end. It is time to rest and be

renewed. We do not live by bread alone and neither do we

live without bread. The strangers take the bread and give

thanks. It is in the sharing of the meal that “their eyes were

opened and they recognized him; whereupon he vanished

from their sight.” The breaking of bread and the giving of

thanks is the way in which we remember the Lord until he

comes again. Jesus vanishes, yet he remains. “Were not our

hearts burning inside us as he talked to us on the road…”

The disciples then go forth and proclaimed the Easter story.

“The Lord has been raised. It is true.”

The story of the road to Emmaus is the story of every Chris-

tian. It is in our journey towards the Lord, with all our doubts

and fears, that we can encounter the stranger who will open

our eyes and inflame our hearts. When our eyes are opened,

we too are to go forth and proclaim, “the Lord has been

raised. It is true.” This is good news, the kerygma.

on how the Our Lady of Guadalupe image is linked to

the Theology of the Body and the ancient Aztec/

Mexican culture. The event will begin at 6:30 PM

with music and confession, followed by Mass at 7

PM. Dinner and talk will follow.
