Happy New Year, AAUW members. We are off to another year of activities and fellowship. I just came from our January Branch meeting. Although I have been a supporter of Planned Parenthood for many years, Jodi Ligget brought new understanding of the many services that are offered and challenges they face. We also got to see Sharon Gale’s entry in the 2018 AAUW Art contest. Her design is titled “Whimsical” and it is lovely. You can vote for Sharon’s design between February 6 and March 4 at [email protected]. Specific directions will be on the website.

Our annual state AAUW Legislative Day is February 20. We may have our largest delegation ever! Thirteen members expressed interest in going to the Capitol in support of the Equal Rights Amendment. Since Nevada recently adopted the amendment, only two more states are needed. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Arizona could be one of them? I will be wearing my “ERA Yes” pin that I wore as I marched in Springfield, the capitol of Illinois after the pas-sage of the amendment in 1972. Representative Pam Powers Han-nley will the featured speaker, along with Rep. Michelle Ugenti-Riva and Rep. Athena Salman. Legislative Day is always fun and informa-tive. Our Representative, JD Mesnard has been invited to offer wel-coming remarks and we will try to make arrangements to meet with our other Legislators. I am looking forward to seeing you at the International Din-ner on February 19. I am proud to be a member of our active and vibrant Southeast Valley Branch of AAUW, and I hope you are too.

Interested? In the past, many fun outings were provided through our Southwesters group. Some nearby

such as St. Anthony’s Monastery, Goldfields, Dolly Steamboat, tours of museums, Orpheum theater, Wild

Horse Resort, Mystery Castle & MIM. Some were farther away in Tucson and Cottonwood (wineries).

We can do outings again! We need ideas and a Coordinator (s) and some volunteers to make this happen.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP NEWS

The Southeast branch of AAUW-AZ is going to award three local scholarships this year! It’s a one-time

happening, due to the great contributions to local scholarship funds organized by previous chairwom-

en. We will give two $1,500 scholarships, and one $1,000 scholarship. One of the larger scholarships will

be named in memory of Helen Mahlik who was a very active branch member prior to her long illness. The

other $1,500 scholarship has been named in honor of Dorothy Cuono, who celebrates her 100th birthday

this year! The remaining $1,000 scholarship will be unnamed. The scholarships will be given to young

women who are 2018 graduates of any Chandler School District high school in May. Our branch repre-

sentatives Nancy Andrews and Ruth Rees will have an easier time making happy decisions this year when

we examine a pile of resumes! It’s a day when we wish we had unlimited funds to help every candidate.

A big thank you to all who participate in the various fundraisers to support this gift to young local schol-

ars. To be able to award three significant scholarships locally will be noticed by the community, and better

yet, it will make us proud! Let’s keep up the good work together. Remember our upcoming Bunco party

will be on March 13th. No brainpower required if you’ve never played. (Or if you have....)

FYI: The final accounting for our earnings via the jewelry party are just over $1,000. We’ve made a few

dollars from attending dinner at the Mediterranean restaurant where our own Amy Andrews is a belly

dancer, and also earned $100 from the sale of note cards that Sharon Gale donated at the Oct. general

meeting. Thanks, Sharon! Thanks Amy !

AAUW received a wonderful bonus for our local scholarship program. Sharon Gale generously donated

her beautifully painted gift cards for sale at our Oct. general meeting. The sale produced $100 for our lo-

cal scholarships. Not only can we thank Sharon for that donation, but she has kindly agreed to provide

more cards for us to sell at the International Dinner. They are beautiful cards, especially lovely ones to

send through the mail, give as special gifts, or nice enough to be framed. Thank you, Sharon!
