ARTISAN BARRELS & TANKS | 2017
Dear Winemaker,
2017 marks our 20th year of proudly and passionately marketing barrels and tanks to the North American wine industry, and we thank all of our customers for your trust and support through the years!
2016 seemed to have been a fairly successful year for most of us in the wine industry, with a nice rebound in the size of the crop that was also of high quality—we hope that was the case for you. And as we prepare for the start of sales campaign and the Unied Trade Show in Sacramento, we’ve been enjoying all the rain and snow here on the West Coast, and we hope it all continues that way through the spring. However, no matter what, we will contin-ue “full speed ahead” with our artisan cooperages and their ne barrels, as well as with our booming market for large format fermentation and maturation vessels. You’ll nd in our catalog our typical wide range of barrels and casks from three to 10,000 Liters.
News for the 2017 Vintage:
We are pleased at the continued success of our Artisan Barrels Selection French oak range. Both styles of Bordeaux barrel, Fire Bent and Steam Bent, have maintained parity in popularity, and it remains very interesting to taste them side by side. There is a very small (5 Euros) increase in their price this year; but of course the Euro exchange rate has gotten even better for the USD. Please see the updated and increased reference list in the back of our catalog--you’ll notice an even greater range this year of wineries from all over North America using our proprietary barrels.
We’ve also had great continued success with our Artisan Barrels Selection 100% Zemplen Forest Hungarian oak barrels (made by our trusted cooper Balazs Nagy). We are expecting continued growth with this excellent cooperage that oers ne Hungarian oak barrels, priced at $650. Balazs also oers Acacia, as well as French oak, and the Hungarian/French blend barrel (Zemplen body, and COF heads) for $710, as well as a full French barrel for the excellent price of $860 (BXTX format only).
We will happily be continuing to develop the market for Artisan Barrels Selection Russian oak barrels, which are made from tight grained, 30 month air-dried oak sourced from the Caucasus Mountains. The cold climate, high elevation source results in very tight grain wood, which imparts restrained spice and soft tannin that accentuate and focus fruit avors. In 2016 we imported these barrels via France for safety and logistics, and it went well, so we’ll do the same and expect an early and safe arrival again this summer.
Rousseau Cooperage’s large format cooperage is running smoothly, and is ready to handle the continued popularity of tanks and casks—so we hope not to sell out so early this year (please do order early!). The new facility is ISO 22000 Certied, to match the barrel cooperage; and as another indication of how well-run the cooperage is, Jean-Marie Rousseau was named manager of the year for companies located in the Côte d’Or! Finally, we were very impressed with the results we tasted in 2016 from 2015’s new tank: the “Zebra” open top (every other stave is baked for two days). We noted rich and dark (but not overwhelming) avors as well as extra texture in the wines fermented in it.
We’re very pleased to have several new showcase wineries now showing o the boutique stainless steel tanks produced by Lejeune from St-Emilion, France. We can now direct you to fantastic installations from Walla Walla, Washington all the way down to the Central Coast of California. Lejeune is a small, family-run rm that has been designing and manufacturing top-end, innovative, even artistic tanks since 1975. From compartmentalized and variable capacity, to truncated and conical, and now a new reverse-truncated “Expansion” tank, the range and sheer style of these tanks is amazing. Because of high demand and limited supply, early winter ordering is recommended to guarantee pre-harvest delivery.
With Nomblot Concrete Tanks, we’re coming o another year of very strong sales, and we’re very pleased with the results from Nomblot’s rst upright truncated tank with a concave interior bottom, the KB35. Kosta Brown in Sebastopol, CA, commissioned Nomblot to design the concave bottom conical tank (925 gallons in volume) to emulate Nomblot’s MC17 (450 gal.) Egg’s interior shape, with the idea of keeping the wine’s lees in suspension longer than would occur in a traditional at bottom tank. We are expecting this innovative KB model tank to be very popular and quickly lead to more sizes. Because of the popularity of its all-natural concrete formula (certied Food Grade by the French Wine Institute), Nomblot will no doubt sell out early again this year. So, as always, VERY early ordering is necessary.
We will continue to oer a rened range of top quality stainless steel accessories and tools from Bellot and Idea Concept, with a focus on tank accessories, gaskets and parts. We’re also extremely pleased to continue to oer the Lux Barrel Bung, a lovely glass barrel bung that has a silicon sleeve to ensure a tight seal in the bung hole. Elegant and classy, these not only look great, but unlike traditional “display” glass-only bungs, the Lux Barrel Bung keeps your wine tightly and safely sealed inside the barrel.
The Oak Cooperage (formerly A&K Cooperage) has settled in as the brand and logo for the cooperage now fully owned by Silver Oak Cellars since 2015. They have been successful in rebuilding the stave wood inventory after the last several dicult years, and for 2017 they will be able to produce a limited amount of Tribute Series (Baccus) barrels with 36 month wood ($30 surcharge). They will be oering the 265L size barrel again this year, and they will also continue producing BGTX (228L) shape barrels. We also hope to be able to oer the very popular Hybrid barrel again in the near future. And more good news: log pricing has settled down, and there will be no price increase from last year for 2017, so we’re condent that The Oak Cooperage barrels will continue to be very competitively priced among American oak producers.
Our Oce and Sales Team continues to evolve in 2017; Jerome’s nephew David Aubin has nished his year in the US, and is returning to France. But happily Tina Milliken, who was a huge help on a part time basis in 2016, will continue this year as Oce Manager, and she has also enlisted a talented and experienced friend with whom she’s worked with many years to join us part time: Nicole Merciari. Nicole will be our Sales & Marketing Administrator, and we welcome her warmly; and this year Gerhard Ziemer starts his tenth season covering service and sales all over North America, but from his home base in Seattle, Washington. Jerome Aubin is of course overseeing the whole operation, as well as seeing his clients like usual: the Artisan Barrels and Tanks team is energized and ready to go!
Emphasizing service and a dedication to better wine ageing, Artisan Barrels will continue to provide the highest quality oak, concrete and stainless steel tanks, and ne oak barrels: all reecting an “artisanal” philosophy and approach. Since visiting wineries and tasting are essential to assess the impact of oak barrels and tanks on your wines, we look forward to evaluating the 2016 barrels and tanks with you.
We wish you all the best for the 2017 vintage!

AB SELECTION | HUNGARIAN AND RUSSIAN OAK BARRELS AND PUNCHEONSArtisan Barrels Selection Hungarian barrels are made in Hungary by our trusted cooper Balazs Nagy who selects premium quality oak staves from the Zemplén mountains forests of Tokaj in the North East of Hungary. All wood is hand split, tight grain and air-dried a minimum of 24 months. Our Hungarian oak clients can choose either our Classic intensive toasting regimen (meaty, spicy, and rmer structure) or our extended Finesse toast level (round, fruit driven, and subtle tannins). Balazs is also oering French oak (Centre-France blend) for either hybrid or full French oak barrels; as well as Acacia barrels. Artisan Barrels Selection Russian oak barrels are made from tight grained, 30 month air-dried staves sourced from forests in the Caucasus Mountains. This well-equipped and proven cooperage, while located in Armenia, is thoroughly French in its philosophy and approach: it is run by a French Master Cooper, and supplies the prestigious Cognac house Martell.

THE OAK COOPERAGE | AMERICAN OAK BARRELS
ARTISAN BARRELS SELECTION | ACCESSORIES AND FITTINGS
Silver Oak Cellars purchased A&K Cooperage two years ago, and these barrels were rebranded as “The Oak Cooperage” in 2016. The Oak Cooperage will still be oering the same all-Missouri oak sourcing, 24 months minimum seasoning, and European toasting methods; so the impact and style of the barrels will remain true to the A&K tradition. Please see the News section of our yearly letter (inside of the front cover page) for a more complete discussion of this change.
Artisan Barrels & Tanks oers accessories related to winemaking in general and with specic applications to wooden, concrete and stainless steel tanks. These top quality accessories come mostly from the Bordeaux based company Bellot which has been specializing in equipment for the wine industry for over 50 years.
