Introduction

2014 has been a great year for the LEGO Company and its fans. More than 650

new Minigure designs were produced. Soon every set will have its unique

Minigures. Collecting and photographing Minigures has yet again increasedin diculty.

The LEGO Movie was one of the most successful animated movies of the year and

although it did not receive an Oscar, at least its hypnotic title song was performed

at the show. Jorgen Vig Knudstorp, CEO of the LEGO Company, performed this

song at its 2015 investors meeting. Everything is awesome for LEGO this year.

The characters in the movie are well designed and so are their Minigures. Benny

and Unikiy are amongst the most memorable designs.

The Super Hero themes are another strong contributor to the Minigure collection

and we will soon have to ask which super hero has not yet been covered. I had to

look up several characters to understand their background and design.

Tolkiens books have now all been lmed by Peter Jackson and with The Bale

of the Five Armies this theme might come to an end. Unless it gets rebooted, pre-

sequeled and otherwise extended as it was done to the Star Wars franchise.

I am very happy with the release of The Simpsons sets and Minigures. Theirdesign is excellent and Springeld oers an enormous reservoir of ideas for new

sets and characters. I cannot wait for Moes Tavern and Barney Gumble. Lets see

how the LEGO Company will approach the slightly more edgy characters and

relationships.

From a cataloging perspective two main issues emerged while working on this

edition. First, the limitations of an Aristotelian taxonomy became apparent again

when the Simpsons Collectible Minigures arrived. Should they be classiedas a group under the Collectible Minigures entry or should the fall under the

Licensed section? Both classications are justiable and I decided for the later.

I created a collectible section within the Simpsons sections. Having to make a

choice is the problem. Liberians have been facing similar problems for hundreds

of years and the arrival of computers, hypertext and the internet are pushing us

towards more exible taxonomies. In the ancient libraries a book could only be

placed on one shelf and hence the forced choice for its classication. Today we can

easily build databases of meta data that can allow any number of classications.Still, the idea of The Ideal Order remains. More on that later this year.

More practically, I added a Disney Universe category and collection all the sub

themes, such as Princesses and Lone Ranger under it. The Yoda Chronicles

category was also added and the Minigures associated to it from previous years

have been reclassied.

Minigure NomenclatureThe nomenclature is based on the three levels of themes and the inclusion of theyear. Each theme received a three leer code, listed at hp://www.minigure.

org/taxonomy/, which already includes the codes for even non-standard scale

Minigures. This resolved the need to distinguish between, for example, the City

Minigures and the Town Minigures. All the gures in the Town precede the

gures from the City theme. The nomenclature for Minigures used in this book is:

hhh.mmm.lll.yyyy.ss

where:

h denotes the high-level theme

m denotes the mid-level theme

l denotes the low-level theme

y denotes the year in which the gure was rst released

s denotes a serial number

Price Guide

The price guide lists the average price for which each Minigure was traded on

Bricklink during the period of September 2014-February 2015 in USD. I included

prices for both new and used Minigures, if available.
