Memorial Drive is the road that leads into Arlington NationalCemetery. The roadway begins on the opposite side of thePotomac River in the vicinity of the Lincoln Memorial. Itcrosses the Memorial Bridge and terminates at the Hemicycle.The bridge, parkway and grand entrance to the cemetery werecommissioned as a single project and were dedicated byPresident Herbert Hoover in 1932. The road networksymbolically links the North and South by originating near theLincoln Memorial and ending near the Custis-Lee Mansion.

The parkway is lined with several monument and memorials.There are tributes commemorating the heroics of the 101stAirborne, the Armored Forces, the Seabees and veterans ofthe Spanish American War as well as the 4th Infantry Divisionand Admiral Richard Byrd. The Hemicycle terminus is a 30-foottall, 226-foot diameter retaining wall. The wall has a bas-reliefof the Great Seal of the United States within a large niche thatis flanked by the emblems of the Department of the Navy andArmy. The Hemicycle also serves as the outer wall of theWomen in Military Service memorial. There are wrought ironentry gates known as Schley Gate and Roosevelt Gate thatbear the seals of the military services.

As motorists travel across the bridge at night toward Arlington,the John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame is visible on the hill.

The Women in Military Service Memorial commemorates thepast, present and future service of women in the armed forcesof the United States. The memorial also acknowledges thecontributions of women affiliated with the uniformed publichealth service and organizations during wartime, such as theRed Cross and USO.

It is the only national memorial that venerates the service of allwomen in every branch of the armed forces throughout thecountry’s history during times of war and peace. The memorial,by Marion Gail Weiss and Michael Manfredi, was dedicated inOctober, 1997.

The structure is located at the entrance to Arlington NationalCemetery behind the Hemicycle. It includes a fountain,reflecting pool and an education center with an arced roof of

glass tablets that are inscribed with quotes from famouswomen who served in the military. As sunlight shines throughthe monument’s roof, the quotes are revealed along the wallsand floor of the education center. The sun reveals additionalquotes as it traverses across the sky.

Visitors can explore the memorial’s education center exhibits,artifacts and Hall of Honor. The memorial also has a 196-seattheater. The memorial’s organizers are actively compiling adatabase of the names and experiences of women who haveserved. Visitors can access the military history and photos ofindividual women through this database.

General Omar Bradley was the nation’s first Chairman of theJoint Chiefs of Staff and the last five-star General of the Army.A graduate of West Point, Bradley rose to command all U.S.ground forces during World War II, the largest contingent ofAmerican soldiers to ever fight under a single fieldcommander. For his style of command, war correspondentErnie Pyle called him the “GI’s General.” Bradley is also wellknown for not wanting to risk conflict with China on the KoreanPeninsula, which he described as “the wrong war, at the wrongplace, at the wrong time, with the wrong enemy.”

His grave is marked by a large granite headstone that isinscribed with his name and that of his two wives. His first wifepreceded him in death. There is a bas-relief of the five-starrank insignia at the top center of the marker.
