May13,1958ThePresidentTheWhiteHouseWashington,D.C.MyDearMr.President:IwassittingintheaudienceattheSummitMeetingofNegroLeaders[1]yesterdaywhenyousaidwemusthavepatience.Onhearingyousaythis,Ifeltlikestandingupandsaying,Ohno!Notagain.Irespectfullyremindyou,sir,thatwehavebeenthemostpatientofallpeople.Whenyousaidwemusthaveselfrespect,Iwonderedhowwecouldhaveselfrespectandremainpatientconsideringthetreatmentaccordedusthroughtheyears.17millionNegroescannotdoasyousuggestandwaitfortheheartsofmentochange.WewanttoenjoynowtherightsthatwefeelweareentitledtoasAmericans.ThiswecannotdounlesswepursueaggressivelygoalswhichallotherAmericansachievedover150yearsago.Asthechiefexecutiveofournation,IrespectfullysuggestthatyouunwittinglycrushthespiritoffreedominNegroesbyconstantlyurgingforbearanceandgivehopetothoseprosegregationleaderslikeGovernorFaubus[2]whowouldtakefromuseventhosefreedomswenowenjoy.YourownexperiencewithGovernorFaubusisproofenoughthatforbearanceandnoteventualintegrationisthegoaltheprosegregationleadersseek.Inmyview,anunequivocalstatementbackedupbyaction,suchasyoudemonstratedyoucouldtakelastfallindealingwithGovernorFaubusifitbecamenecessary,wouldletitbeknownthatAmericaisdeterminedtoprovideinthenearfutureforNegroesthefreedomsweareentitledtoundertheconstitution.Respectfullyyours,JackieRobinson

theSupremeCourthaddecidedintheirfavor,andthatthebuseswouldhavetodesegregate.Theboycotters
organization,theMontgomeryImprovementAssociation,circulatedthefollowingflyertoadvisepeopleonhow
tobehaveinordertomaintainthemovementsnonviolentcharacterandenjoyadignifiedvictory.Readthe
letterandanswerthequestions.
IntegratedBusSuggestions

Thisisahistoricweekbecausesegregationonbuseshasnowbeendeclaredunconstitutional.Withinafewdaysthe
SupremeCourtMandatewillreachMontgomeryandyouwillbereboardingintegratedbuses.Thisplacesuponus
allatremendousresponsibilityofmaintaining,infaceofwhatcouldbesomeunpleasantness,acalmandloving
dignitybefittinggoodcitizensandmembersofourRace.Ifthereisviolenceinwordordeeditmustnotbeour
peoplewhocommitit.
Foryourhelpandconveniencethefollowingsuggestionsaremade.Willyouread,studyandmemorizethemso
thatournonviolentdeterminationmaynotbeendangered.First,somegeneralsuggestions:
1.Notallwhitepeopleareopposedtointegratedbuses.Acceptgoodwillonthepartofmany.
2.Thewholebusisnowfortheuseofallpeople.Takeavacantseat.
3.Prayforguidanceandcommityourselftocompletenonviolenceinwordandactionasyouenterthebus.
4.DemonstratethecalmdignityofourMontgomerypeopleinyouractions.
5.Inallthingsobserveordinaryrulesofcourtesyandgoodbehavior.
6.RememberthatthisisnotavictoryforNegroesalone,butforallMontgomeryandtheSouth.Donotboast!Do
notbrag!
7.Bequietbutfriendly;proud,butnotarrogant;joyous,butnotboisterous.
8.Belovingenoughtoabsorbevilandunderstandingenoughtoturnanenemyintoafriend.
