BANDALOOPThursday & Friday, September 17 & 18, 2015 at 8pm Stewart Theatre $36-$40

For years, folks have been asking us to bring back the awe-inspiring dancers of BANDALOOP. The reopening of Talley Student Union and Stewart Theatre is just the occasion! A pioneer in vertical dance performance, BANDALOOP seamlessly weaves dynamic physicality, intricate choreography and the art of climbing to turn the dance floor on its side. Whether performing in theatres, on skyscrapers, or mountain cliffs, their innovative approach to dance is at once graceful and powerful.

This project was supported by the N.C. Arts Council, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources; and is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the N.C. Arts Council.

Blackbird, FlyTuesday & Wednesday, September 22 & 23, 2015 at 8pm Titmus Theatre $26

Violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain – aka DBR – is a longtime favorite of NC State audiences. He is renowned for seamlessly blending funk, rock, hip-hop and classical music. For his latest project, DBR teams up with acclaimed spoken word artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph. In a concert for voice, body, and strings called Blackbird, Fly, they weave together a tapestry of movement, narrative, music and Haitian folklore to engage audiences in dialog about critical questions of our time.

Post-show conversation with the artists.

Presented with support from the University Scholars Program.

The Kenny Barron TrioSaturday, October 24, 2015 at 8pm Stewart Theatre Pre-show talk, 7pm $31-$35

NEA Jazz Master Kenny Barron has an unmatched ability to mesmerize audiences with his elegant piano playing, sensitive melodies and infectious rhythms. Emel MathlouthiThursday, October 29, 2015 at 8pm Stewart Theatre Pre-show talk, 7pm $24-$28

Tunisian singer, songwriter, guitarist and composer Emel Mathlouthi stands with the great divas of the Arab world. She gained instant fame when her song Kelmti Horra (“My Word is Free”) was adopted by the Arab Spring revolutionaries on the streets of Tunis, earning her the nickname “the voice of Tunisian Revolution.” Her gorgeous, intricate sound moves between rock, trip-hop and electronica, interlaced with strong Arabic and North African connections.

Art of Time Ensemble Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club BandSaturday, November 14, 2015 at 8pm Stewart Theatre $36-$40

Led by internationally-renowned concert pianist Andrew Burashko, Steven Page (founder and former lead of the iconic band Barenaked Ladies) joins an ensemble of singers including Glen Phillips (front man of Toad the Wet Sprocket), Andy Maize (Skydiggers), and Craig Northey (The Odds) in a re-creation of the Beatles’ groundbreaking album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. Accompanied by Art of Time’s world class orchestra, songs like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, When I’m Sixty-Four, and With a Little Help From My Friends are reimagined in arrangements that affectionately celebrate the music while preserving the vocal harmonies and musical elements that earned its designation by Rolling Stone as “the most important rock and roll album ever made.”

Up close and thrilling! Gravity & Other Myths is a multi-award winning Australian acrobatics ensemble. They create work that is highly physical, innovative and unique, performed by seven acrobats who push their limits without reserve.

Their latest show, A Simple Space, is a dizzying collection of works that will be performed on the thrust of Stewart Theatre (the part of the stage that extends into the seating area). It’s supported by live percussion and presented so intimately that you can feel the heat, hear every breath, and be immersed in every moment.

The SwinglesThursday, December 10, 2015 at 8pm Stewart Theatre $28-$32

You know their trademark sound from Glee and Sex and the City. For more than half a century, The Swingles have pushed the boundaries of vocal music, picking up five Grammy Awards along the way. Today’s London-based Swingles are an international a cappella phenomenon – seven young and versatile voices who deliver folk ballads, funk jams and fugues with equal precision and passion. This concert will feature music for the holiday season.

The Swingles concert will open with pieces performed in tandem with students of the State Chorale.

John PizzarelliSaturday, February 6, 2016 at 8pm Stewart Theatre Pre-show talk, 7pm $31-$35

What a guy! We get more requests for John Pizzarelli than any other artist who has performed here. He’s witty, utterly charming, has an amazing voice, and is a jaw-dropping guitarist. Pizzarelli is renowned for his rich, original interpretations of songs from the Great American Songbook mixed with contemporary classics. He will be performing with the members of his quartet.

Cameron CarpenterSaturday, March 19, 2016 at 8pm Stewart Theatre Pre-show talk, 7pm $26-$30

We think he relishes his bad boy reputation. Cameron Carpenter is having a ball smashing the stereotypes of organists and organ music, all the while generating worldwide acclaim. Celebrated for his flawless technique and flamboyant style, he’ll be playing the International Touring Organ – a monumental digital organ of his own design. This organ was officially introduced with two Lincoln Center concerts in March 2014.

Acoustic AfricaSaturday, April 16, 2016 at 8pm Stewart Theatre Pre-show talk, 7pm $31-$35

The fourth installment of Acoustic Africa’s exhilarating journey focuses on the richness of the African traditions of voice and song, featuring two beloved singers. A modern troubadour with extraordinary appeal, Habib Koité‘s musicianship, wit and wisdom translate across cultures. Hailing from the musically prolific West African nation of Mali, the guitarist and composer has been named the biggest pop star of the region by Rolling Stone. An accomplished guitarist, percussionist, composer and poet – with a pure and commanding voice – South Africa’s Vusi Mahlasela sang a message of peace during the anti-apartheid movement. His music is uplifting and beautiful, blending folk, pop, and traditional African music.
