What arE thE nbts?The National Benchmark Tests measure your academic readiness for university. They complement and support (rather than replace or duplicate) your National Senior Certificate (NSC) results.

Who usEs thEm, and hoW?A number of universities across South Africa use the NBTs to help interpret your NSC results. Universities use the NBT results in different ways:• Some use them to help make decisions

about your access to university. This means that your NBT results, in combination with your NSC results, are used to determine whether you are ready for academic study.

• Some use them to determine placement within the university. This means that the results are used to decide whether you will need extra academic support after being admitted to university.

• Some use the tests to aid in curricula development within the university – what is taught and when.

What do i havE to knoW about Writing thE nbts?You can find out all you need to know about writing the NBTs in 2015 on the National Benchmark Tests website, www.nbt.ac.za. Here are some important points:• There are two tests: The AQL, or

Academic Literacy and Quantitative

Literacy test, and the MAT, or Mathematics test.

• Everyone applying to a university that uses the NBTs has to write the AQL test. The MAT test is reserved for those candidates who wish to apply to programmes for which Maths is a requirement, such as Health Sciences, Engineering, Accounting, and most of the sciences.

• There are no past papers or special study materials to prepare for the tests. The tests assess your prior knowledge: what you know and are able to do.

• You must register online to write the tests, and you pay up front. Go to www.nbt.ac.za to register.

• A complete schedule containing all test locations and dates is available on the NBT website.

• The costs are as follows: R80 for the AQL test only, and R160 for the AQL and MAT tests taken together.

• It is important that you write the test(s) in time to meet university admission deadlines. If you are applying to more than one university, make sure to take the test(s) in time to meet the earliest deadline.

ingreDients: • 4 tbls olive oil• 1 tsp white mustard seeds• 2 cm fresh root ginger, peeled and cut into

thin strips• 2 cloves garlic, roughly chopped• ½ tsp turmeric• 2 green chillies, sliced in half lengthways• 3cupssnowywhitecauliflowerflorets• Juice of 1 lemon• ½ tsp salt• Wellingtons Chutney of your choice•2tblscoriander,roughlychopped

MethoD:Heat the olive oil, add the mustard seeds and cook till they pop. They jump all over so be careful – and don’t burn them!Add the ginger and garlic, turmeric and chillies and fry gently while stirring all the time for about 2 minutes.Addthecauliflower,giveitagoodstir to coat with the spices and cook for 8- 10 minutes.Remove from the heat, add the lemon juice, stir in the Chutney, salt and coriander and give it a good toss. Serve hot. Tip: This is great as a salad served at room temperature, or served hot as a side dish. It also works as a vegetarian dish served with fragrant saffron rice.

MATHS We are extremely proud of Alexander Greenen who participated in the 9th CMATHS National Championship 2015 and won a Gold trophy in

this competition. Alexander qualified to participate at the Interna-tional Championships in the USA at the end of the year.

TENNISKholo Montsi attended the ITF/CAT Camp in Botswana and had a good and intensive training programme taking on the two U/14 ITf/CAT Tournaments. He competed against players from around the African Continent. As a Curro and South African ambassador he did not disappoint and came back with 4 medals.

Horizon Maths Competition (HMC) competition encourages learners to work outside the curriculum and widen their knowledge of Maths. This year it was hosted by Star College.

Grade 5, 6 and 7 learners from 25 schools participated in the competition, enabling the HMC first round to accommodate over 4500 learners from Pretoria, raising the

national total for the competition to about 22 500 learners.

Over 450 learners were eligible to write the second round in Pretoria of which 182 learners are from Glenstantia Primary School. Grade 5 has 28 learners, Grade 6 71 and Grade 7 83. We are very proud of all our learners who are participating.

On Tuesday, 2 June 2015, Glenstantia Primary School secured the U/10 A, U/10 B and U/13 A, U/13B and U/13C teams to play in the finals of the Challenge Cup Competition schedule for 9 and 10 June 2015. This highlighted the ultimate goal for the schools Soccer Department, it’s Sports Department and the Schools Management that had to

cope with learners writing final exams and playing in the finals at the same time.On the day of the finals, Glenstantia Primary School was crowned champions in the U/10B, U/13A, U/13B and U/13C team competitions. U/10A lost their match and came in 2nd place. Congratulations to all the teams and their magnificent achievement.
