Proclaiming God’s Word Scripture Lesson: Matthew 22:23-33 Pew Bible, NRSV (NT), p. 25 The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. . Time with the Children Sermon “What Our Questions Reveal” Dr. John M. Willingham “In the resurrection, then, whose wife of the seven will she be? For all of them had married her.” —Matthew 22:28

Responding to God’s Word *Affirmation of Faith —The Nicene Creed

We believe in One God, the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only son of God, eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from God, true God, from true God,

begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became truly human.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the death, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and son is worshiped and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the death, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Concerns of the Church

(Persons nearest the center aisle are asked to sign and pass the Act of Friendship pad toward the outside aisle. Please keep the cover open as the pad is returned.)

the concept of identity and the Bible? More than you might think! Come join us next Wednesday at 5:30 as we continue on a four week series about Identity and how you have been uniquely and wonderfully made by a loving God.

As always, we start with ice breakers and games, followed by food and fellowship, and we close with a creative lesson on scripture. Hope to see you there!

We will be gathering for a weekend retreat with more than 200 teens from the Philadelphia area. Space is limited and is on a first come first serve basis.

The cost is $140, including lodging and all meals, except for one at North Bay Retreat Center in North East Maryland.

This promises to be an awesome weekend, Casey Fitzgerald will be teaching and the band Constant Recourse will be leading us in worship.

You won’t want to miss this weekend! Oh and did I mention the camp has several rock walls, a giant swing, and a zip line?!

You can get more info at www.dpcyouth.com or www.realityretreat.org.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

Volunteers are needed to monitor coffee, run food to and from tables, and distribute food to the table runners. You will only be required to help during meal times, the rest of the time you are on your own to enjoy the facilities. There is no cost to stay at the camp (unless you want a private room), which is an amazing, fully modern camp. Adults are housed in their own building. Once the volunteers are set, carpooling will be worked out if you so desire. Joining on this “adventure” will not only be a great help for our youth but also a wonderful time of fellowship for all of the adults!

Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper Invitation to the Lord’s Table Friends, this is the joyful feast of the people of God! They will come from east and west, and from

north and south and sit at table in the kingdom of God. According to Luke, when our risen

Lord was at table with his disciples, he took the bread and blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.

And their eyes were opened and they recognized him. This is the Lord’s table. Our Savior

invites those who trust him to share in the feast which he has prepared.

Prayer of Great Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us

give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is truly right and our

greatest joy to give you thanks and praise, eternal God...Therefore we praise you, joining our voices

with angels and archangels and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the

glory of your name: Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee, though the eye of sinfulness

thy glory may not see, only thou art holy; there is none beside thee, perfect in power, in love and

purity...As our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray…

The Lord’s Prayer (Traditional)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on

earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive

our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,

and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

THE PRESBYTERY MARKS THIS SPECIAL ANNIVERSARY THIS MONTH. On World Communion, today, we will collect the Peace and Global Witness Offering on behalf of the PCUSA, which helps to address systems of injustice across the world and to advocate for peace and justice through collaborative projects of education and Christian witness. 50% of the offering will go directly to the Presbyterian Mission Agency for national projects, while the remaining 50% will support the Philadelphia Presbytery's 300th Anniversary campaign to raise $300,000 for 8 local initiatives that promote education of children, disrupt the school-to-prison pipeline, and elevate restorative justice.

Christian Sympathy. The sympathy of the congregation is extended to Jeff Heilakka on the death of his father Herbert C. Brown on September 19. We hold this family in prayer in their time of loss.

The flowers are given in loving memory of my husband John Morasco and my parents, Robert and Patricia Lesley by Cynthia Morasco.

Participation in the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. Our Book of Order declares “the invitation to the Lord’s Supper is extended to all who have been baptized, remembering that access to the Table is not a right conferred upon the worthy, but a privilege given to the undeserving who come in faith, repentance, and love.” In addition, “Baptized children who are being nurtured and instructed in the significance of the invitation to the Table and the meaning of their response are invited to receive the Lord’s Supper, recognizing that their understanding of participation will vary according to their maturity.”

Communion Bread. For those with special dietary needs, there is a small satin pouch in every bread pocket that contains a wheat-and gluten-free bread.

Communion servers. 8:30: David Buday, Berta Duncan, Bob Fighera, Craig Garretson, Hazelanne Karabudak, Jon Knapp, Steve Quist, Lindsay Shull. 11:00 Joan Christianson, Peter Christianson, Marie Cooper, Bob Fighera, Bev Jewusiak, Tim Liebig, Laura Mendelson, James Paccioretti, Mark Vandersall.

DPC FORUM LED BY ELSIE MCKEE WHAT DID REFORM LOOK LIKE TO THE PERSON IN THE PEW? Tuesday, October 24, 7:30 pm in CCR. Most of us who come to church, share in prayer or Bible studies may wonder if people always worshiped this way. As part of our reflection on the 500th anniversary of the reformation we’ll explore the ways ordinary people participated in worship and devotional life in the late medieval church, identify some of the tensions that led to a desire for change, and look at some key changes which Protestants like Calvin made to the way people in the pew experienced worship and devotional life.

Elsie McKee is Professor of Reformation Studies and the History of Worship at Princeton Theological Seminary. Her academic research has focused on the 16th c. Reformation, particularly books on John Calvin and a woman reformer, Katharina Schütz Zell.

ONGOING Classes

GOOD NEWS AND THE OTHER NEWS. We discuss current events, giving opportunity to reflect upon the story from the perspective of faith and ponder what Scripture has to say to such matters. Led by Christo Claassans, Jenny Danzis, Jay Stough, and the Pastors. AH-207

Today: Leader Silent to Plight of Rohingya Muslims Driven from Myanmar. Since August, some 420,000 Rohingya have poured into Bangladesh from neighboring Myanmar, fleeing escalation of violence against them. The U.N. Secretary-General called the actions of the Myanmar government "ethnic cleansing" designed to drive "undesirables" out by whatever means necessary. Many had hoped the rise to power of Nobel Peace laureate and democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi would result in acknowledgement of the civil rights of the Rohingya. Once a political prisoner, Suu Kyi has been largely silent and at times seemingly unsympathetic to the plight of the Rohingya. As one former fellow political prisoner put it, "We never expected that Aung San Suu Kyi would have changed so much herself once she got into power." Join us as to discuss our response to times when leaders disappoint. Led by John Willingham, AH-207 iLIGHT. For individuals and couples navigating career and family, offering diverse topics and formats. Whether you’re married or single, the parent of a toddler or a teenager, or not a parent at all—you are welcome! We are all Learning In God’s House Together! AH-211 Returning October 15. MAN-TALK. Men of DPC gather for a time of study and fellowship, addressing personal problems that are seldom discussed. Each session is presented by a Christian professional or Bible scholar. Celebrating our 11th year reaching out to men! Coordinated by Lou Zoppel. Today—Wisdom based on the book of Proverbs, Chapter 3. Wisdom found in God’s holy word that is practical, applicable and guaranteed to help us succeed in every aspect of life. Led by Carl Richards. AH-120

PROTESTANT REFORMATION. October 31, 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, which began with the posting of Martin Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses. The works and teachings of Martin Luther and other Protestant reformers, including John Calvin and

Huldrych Zwingli, transformed church and society in 16th century Europe. The Reformation also had a profound impact on later historical developments such as the Enlightenment and the formation of the United States (and Doylestown Presbyterian Church!). The first class will provide an overview of the key figures and ideas of the Reformation. The subsequent classes will focus on contemporary themes which will be discussed using a combination of primary source documents from key Reformation leaders (primarily Luther and Calvin) and more modern source material. Today – The Reformation and Faith and Works October 8 – The Reformation and Peace and Justice Led by Greg Jensen. AH-213 THE WORD AMONG US. This class is an in-depth Bible study and discussion group that welcomes all who are interested in exploring Scripture. We are studying 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, and Ephesians. These four letters from Paul deal with problems of divisions and debates within the church, immoral behavior among some of the early Christians, and theological questions arising from false teachers. Led by Dick Cornelius and Margaret Thoresen, AH-209

GENEROSITY SERIES. October 15 to November 5 Good News and The Other News, iLight and The Word Among Us will be participating in these classes. In The Genius of Generosity: Lessons from a Secret Pact Between Two Friends, pastor and author Chip Ingram provides motivation and practical application from Scripture to help each of us grow towards a life of greater giving.

GENEROSITY EVENING CLASSES. October 15, 22, 29 & November 5, 7-8 pm. This class is offered to those who are not able to attend the Sunday morning classes. Call the church to register. Led by Maureen Arnold and Geri McMullin, Library
