    Prestons College is delighted to have been accepted to The Gazelle Group a

    group of 20 enterprising colleges whose aim is to provide an education thatdoesnt limit you to the classroom, but instead provides the opportunities todiscover what it takes to work in a real life environment.

    The Gazelle Colleges Group is a group of 20 further education colleges across the UK that givestudents the opportunity to learn in a work-focused environment, and gain commercial experiencethat will help you succeed in the workplace, or as an entrepreneur.

    Gazelle Colleges are moving away from the traditional classroom learning environment towards anapproach that puts you at the centre of your college career. You will have a number of opportunitiesto work in commercial environments, attend unique events and take part in enterprise competitionswhilst studying for a qualification in your chosen subject.

    Many Gazelle Colleges run student-led companies, supported by the colleges and staffed bystudents. Its a great opportunity to experience a real workplace environment while assisted by thecollege. Some roles are voluntary, but wherever possible you will be paid for work you undertake.

    Activities

    Prestons College students can takepart in a range of activities includingeducational visits, sports activities, guestspeaker talks and city breaks. Check yourcourse for the additional activities youcan enjoy.

    Start to Sport

    Prestons College has received fundingfrom Sport England to increase the

    number of students taking part in fun,recreational sports and health activitiesat college. Activities include traditionalsports such as Football, Cricket, Netball,Badminton and Table Tennis as well asmodern sports such as Futsal, MartialArts and Rock Climbing.

    Respect Week

    (22nd April-26th April 2013)

    Students took part in a range of activitiesfor Respect Week including workshopson race and cohesion, LGBT, the Human

    Library, Start to Sport and a visit from aLondon 2012 Gold Medallist.

    Youll never be bored at Prestons College. We organise different activities all year

    round so that you can have fun and meet new people. So whether youre a budding

    entrepreneur or a sports fan; someone who enjoys travelling to new places or

    raising money for charity - well have a challenge for you. Join in at Prestons College

    Enterprise Week

    In 2013 Prestons College held itsfirst enterprise week. During theweek students received advice andinformation from the regions businessesabout the world of work, business ideasand how they can achieve more.

    The Coffee Mat Challenge

    A competition held for students towin 2,000to help them launch their

    business idea. Students took part in aseries of business related challengesand workshops before presentingtheir business idea to a panel includingNorman Tenray, Obas Group ManagingDirector and former student andentrepreneur, Kirsty Henshaw, togetherwith senior management from theCollege.

    Entry

    There are no formal entry requirements for this level of study. You will need toattend an interview showing your interest in the subject and a willingness to learn.

    Level 1

    You need a profile of mainly grade Es at GCSE including English and maths.

    Level 2

    You need four GCSEs at grade D or above including English and maths. Please checkyour course for additional entry criteria.

    Level 3 (BTEC/Vocational)

    You need five GCSEs at A*-C grade. A GCSE at grade C in either English or mathswith a minimum grade D for the other subject. Please check your course foradditional entry criteria.

    Level 3 (A-Levels)

    Study Programmes

    Study programmes have beenintroduced by the Government forall 16-18 year olds. This means thatwhatever you study youll have what youwant when you finish. This could be anapprenticeship, university course or acareer. On a study programme youll havea substantial qualification, meaningfulwork experience and GCSE maths andEnglish at grade A*-C. Youll also gettutorials, enrichment activities and studysessions to help you along the way.

    Youll find that all the tutors at PrestonsCollege have industry experienceand most of them continue to work inindustry to keep their skills up-to-date.This means youll learn from someonewho has been there and knows whatsexpected of you in the world of work.Plus, youll have access to our fantasticfacilities related to your course giving youreal-life experience.

    Vocational Courses

    Vocational qualifications are great if youknow the industry you want to work inas you will choose to study one subjectarea. Assessment is usually throughcoursework and assignments and willinclude practical activities alongsidetheory. On some courses you may berequired to undertake a work placementand gain real hands on experience.

    Choose a vocational qualification if You prefer to be assessed through

    coursework, portfolio building and

    practical assessments. You want to progress to Higher

    Education or within a specificprofession.

    You want to gain valuable workexperience and skills in preparationfor employment.

    What are the benefits of studyingan Apprenticeship?

    By choosing an Apprenticeshipyou can gain the skills you needfor your career. This can keep youahead of the competition whenapplying for future roles as you willhave real work experience alongsideyour qualifications. Your employerand Prestons College will supportyou throughout your programmeof study. Your employer will beable to teach you industry skillsand show you how to use what

    you have learnt in the classroomin practical situations. PrestonsCollege will support your learning inthe workplace and make sure youremployment rights are protected.As an apprentice you will earn whileyou learn and with university feesincreasing, this is a real alternativeto the more traditional route. Mostemployers that take on apprenticessupport staff in pursuing furtherqualifications right up to degreelevel. Most universities also take realindustry experience into account

    for entry requirements to degreeprogrammes.

    Choose an Appreticeship if:

    You want to gain recognisedqualifications while working in theindustry.

    You wish to develop your workbased skills earning a weekly wagewith all the benefits of a full-timeemployee.

    Prestons College has established

    relationships with a number of localemployers. By becoming an Apprenticeyou gain real life experience in the workplace while studying for nationallyrecognised qualifications.

    The qualifications you will study dependon the industry you want to work in. As anoverview, all Apprenticeships include thefollowing elements: An appropriate Qualification Credit

    Framework (QCF) qualification ateither Level 2 or Level 3.

    Functional Skills qualifications

    including Maths, English and ICT. A Technical Certificate relevant to

    the Apprenticeship. Further qualifications or

    requirements as specified by theparticular occupation.

    Apprenticeships are becoming increasingly popular because youll work with a

    local company. That means you can earn while you learn, which helps reduce

    the cost of studying. Weve got great relationships with a wide range of local

    employers.

    There are many employers who arelooking for people to join their businessand want them to receive further trainingto help improve and develop theirskills and abilities. We will check thatyour employer pays you a fair wage inaccordance with the National MinimumWage guidelines, and that they providea safe working environment, includingappropriate working hours and theprovision of day release.

    How do I know if an Apprenticeshipis the right choice for me?

    If you would like to enter workafter leaving school, then anApprenticeship is a great way todo this. An Apprenticeship is aroute that many young peoplechoose rather than follow thetraditional academic or universityroute. If you are not sure whetheran Apprenticeship is right for youspeak to a member of the CareersGuidance Team who can give youimpartial information, advice andguidance about your options afterleaving school.

    AQA BaccalaureateThe AQA Baccalaureate is anextra qualification that gives you aunique opportunity to significantlyimprove your learning, educationand employment prospects. TheAQA Baccalaureate is an academicqualification which builds on your coreA-Level subjects, adding significantvalue through wider learning,independent study and utilising theexcellent enrichment opportunitiesavailable through Prestons College.Employers and Higher Education

    centres are increasingly seekingstudents who can demonstrate thatthey are resourceful, imaginativeand able to use their initiative bothindependently and with others, and thiqualification will help you do that as itrecognises your all round achievement

    Choose A-Levels if:

    You prefer to be assessed throughexaminations

    You want to study a range ofsubjects

    You want to develop yourindependent study skills inpreparation for Higher Education

    You are interested in moreacademic based, rather than workand skills based education

    If you know the career you want youmay find that a range of subjects are

    New training centre to provide first class plumbing and

    heating training

    Our new BA XI Training Academy gives heating and

    plumbing engineers the opportunity to train using the latest

    technologies and work on the latest line of BAXI heating and

    boiler systems. This exciting new development provides

    existing students with additional opportunities to develop

    their knowledge and opens the door for further professionaldevelopment training for plumbing and heating engineers in

    the region. The new centre features a range of boiler and hot

    water storage units from the BDR Thermea range including

    Baxi, Potterton, Main and Remeha which are all the latest

    systems for learners to work with.

    Trainees triumph in regional Skillbuild heats

    Six students from Prestons College triumphed in the regional

    heat of SkillBuild the UKs largest multi-trade competition.

    The six successful students were;

    Stephen Pilkington, 22, a (CITB) apprentice who isemployed by Roy Tattersall and came rst in the JuniorBricklaying competition.

    Jack Webster, 18, a Prestons College apprentice who isemployed by Parkin Design & Build and came second inthe Senior Bricklaying competition

    Jack Lomax, 20, a (CITB) apprentice who is employedby Chris Miller and came third in the Senior Bricklayingcompetition.

    Ellie Townsend, 16, who is a full-time Level 1 student,came second in the Junior Painting and Decoratingcompetition.

    Arian Hajdari, 34, who is a full time Level 3 student, camerst in the Senior Painting and Decorating competition.

    Course Information

    At Level 2 youll learn safe workingpractices, interpreting engineeringinformation and maths.     Progression
