Nakeda will be transferring to the University of Alabama where she will major in psychology.

Grove Hill native Callie Terrell has spent a major portion of her life around the tax business. Both her parents and grandparents own their own tax preparation companies in Jackson, AL and Grove Hill, AL, respectively. Her fam-ily’s occupation has had a large influence on her decision to pursue a career in business. “I would like to keep the family business going!” she exclaimed.

These past two years have been very busy for Callie. While at Alabama Southern, she participated in Phi Theta Kappa, Student Campus Ministries, the Honors Program, the Student Leadership Medallion Program, and a Student Leadership Institute that was held last summer. She served as a tutor for Student Support Services and as an ambassa-dor to the College as well. Callie gained valuable job experi-ence working with her family as a tax practitioner and a junior accountant/secretary. “Anytime I can get some free time, away from studying and working, I like to sleep and hang out with friends, but mostly sleep,” she says.

When asked about Alabama Southern, Callie com-mented, “I have enjoyed my time here at ASCC. The small classes and getting to spend one-on-one time with the in-structors has been invaluable to me because I know I proba-bly won’t get that when I transfer.” When asked about Stu-dent Support Services, she stated, “SSS has helped me with my study habits. It has also allowed me to meet other peo-ple who have the same interests as me and people who plan to transfer to the University of Alabama as I am. Overall, I have learned a lot from SSS.”

Callie is heading to the University of Alabama in the fall, with her sister Cassie, where they will both major in business with a concentration in accounting.

Oh, the Places You’ll Go!

Dr. Seuss

Oh, the places you’ll go!

You’ll be on your way up!

You’ll be seeing great sights!

You’ll join the high fliers

who soar to high heights.

You won’t lag behind, because you’ll have the speed.

You’ll pass the whole gang and you’ll soon take the lead.

Wherever you fly, you’ll be the best of the best.

Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.

Helping Students Reach Their Full Potential Tutoring is one of the many services that SSS offers to help participants suc-ceed. Tutoring is challenging, yet rewarding for both the tutor and the tutee. The tutors for 2006 -2007 were (Monroeville campus) Cala Anderson, Lacey Bailey, Jennifer Barton, Amber Caskey, Hannah Cole, Jasmyne Curtis, Dario Davis, Hillary Floyd, Ashley Gallimore, Timmy Goldman, Andrew Kinman, Verrona Lett, Jillian Markle, Jared Miller, James Nettles, LeeEllen Philen, Cabria Rankins, Emilee Ricketts, Nakeda Snider, Martez Stewart, Russell Walters, Sarah Welch, Stephanie Whiddon, Brandi Wiggins, and Dorothy Williams; (Thomasville campus) Makesheila Berry, Antheris Deria, Chansie Jones, Nicholas Nelson, James Nettles, Jennifer Parnell, Holly Parten, Heather Sellers, Callie Terrell, Cassie Terrell, Markita Watkins, and Shantae Williams. Several participants took advantage of the tutorial services during the 2006 -2007 academic year. They made the following comments about the tutoring program: ∗ If the tutoring program was not offered, I don’t know how I would have made

it. ∗ Tutoring gives me the confidence and the ability I need to do my work.

∗ I hate math, but my tutor made it simple enough for me to understand.

“Celebrating Excellence”

SSS Tutors

Although it has been almost a year since I started working here at Ala-bama Southern, it feels like I just started yesterday. As I walked into the SSS office for the first time, I won-dered what kind of people I would meet and the chal-

lenges that would lie ahead. I must say that everyone, from the students, faculty, and staff, has been so welcom-ing and a delight to work with.

Being that I participated in Student Support Ser-vices in college, I had a pretty good idea what the program was all about. One of the most exciting aspects of the pro-gram is taking the students on trips to visit four year uni-versities. After helping them decide on a major, what classes will transfer to their school of choice, and filling out admission/housing applications, this is the time when I get to show them, up close and personal, the place where they will be completing their next two years of study. Back in college when we [SSS] went to visit four year universi-ties, we always rode on the bus. So imagine my surprise when Ms. Dees called and told me to pick up the van key for the transfer trip because I would be driving. I thought, “me?...drive a BIG, WIDE 15 passenger van?….oh boy.” Nevertheless, I have grown accustomed to the van and its wideness; and, I believe, I can drive with the best of ‘em!

As I try to think of some of the challenges that I have faced over the past eleven months, I can not think of any. Then again, if I were writing this article in the fall or spring semester when I was trying to look for a student who had seemed to have dropped off the face of the earth, or while I was trying to convince a student that he/she need to study in order to pass a class (DUH!), it would be a different story. I have realized that those “challenges” are just a part of the job and even though there have been days when I wanted to hop on the next plane to a far away island, all the “challenges” have been worth it. I enjoy working with the students and seeing them reach their goals, whether it be walking across the stage in May or completing their freshmen year. Working with them has made me realize, even more so, the importance of an edu-cation and what a difference giving someone a little sup-port can make. I look forward to all of the “challenges” that will arise in the year to come and helping even more students attain their goals.

How has SSS helped you? Some of the 2006-2007 SSS graduates replied with the following responses:

SSS helped me when I needed tutoring, advice on college choices, and they helped me when I just needed someone to talk to.

It has helped me in my classes by providing tutors and computers. The advisors were very helpful in finding the classes I needed to take in order to graduate.

SSS has helped me become a better student, how to be a leader among my peers, and helped me to transfer twice but this time it’s for real!

SSS has provided me with helpful information on how to get the most out of college.

Student Support Services has helped me study better, learn the importance of school, and what you have to do to succeed in life.

SSS has helped me achieve my most honorable prize and that is graduation.

It helped me to be more concerned about things and not to let anything stop me from achieving my goals.

It has helped me to reach the goals I set when I came back to school, which is graduation.

Help is always available no matter what you need. SSS is a very useful service that many students need to take advantage of.

The staff of SSS has helped me stay focused and has been very supportive in my times of need. Also, it has helped me meet many new people.

The 2006-2007 SSS graduates left a bit of advice behind for their underclassmen and fellow classmates.

Get involved! Don’t underestimate yourself and always believe in yourself!

Even when you think you can’t do it, tell yourself that you can. With God’s help all things are possible.

Take as many hours as you can, and make sure you remember your degree plan to guide you to receiving your degree from Alabama Southern and by all means please don’t wait to the last minute to do anything.

Join SSS if you are able to because it is very helpful. Get a tutor if you need one and don’t be afraid to take the advantage of having them around to help.

Go to class every day because it will be worth it in the end.

Look at all your choices and ask your teachers and advisors for advice.

Always be on time and prepare for class.

Don’t take the teachers for granted.

Participating in class is very helpful when learning.

The best advice I can give the underclassmen is to stay in SSS and keep working hard. Never give up and give 110% all the time.
