C. PLANNING THE INSTALLATION

It is IMPORTANT to spend some time planning the

installation, before starting. Time spent on planning the

layout at this stage can avoid mistakes later on.

1. Surface to which the trunking is to be installed should

be flat and prepared for decorating.

2. Establish the layout of the trunking run with particular

attention to the following:-

2.1 Changes in direction of the trunking.

2.2 The position of any feeds to or from the system.

2.3 The position of ant connections with existing

trunking/wiring systems.

2.4 When mounting profiles L and M, at floor level, a

gap of 5.0 mm minimum should be left between the

lower edge of the Main Carrier and the top surface

of the floor finish.

2.5 When mounting profile n at floor level, a gap of

3.0mm minimum should be left between the

underside Extension Carrier and the top

surface of the floor finish.

2.6 Minimum distance between two corners is 130mm.

See section D2.

1. Fine toothed tenon saw or a hacksaw with an 32-36

TPI blade for cutting trunking or preferably a circular

saw with a 350mm diameter fine tungsten tipped blade

(100 TPI approx).

2. A suitable mitre block for cutting trunking base and lid.

(We recommend the use of a mitre block, MK List no.

KB/2).

3. All purpose utility knife for trimming of trunking.

4. Spirit level, Plumb Bob and Chalk Line.

5. A range of screwdrivers (flat or cross point) to suit fixing

screws. (see 7 below).

6. A 5.5mm diameter drill bit.

7. Fixing screws for fixing trunking. No. 8, Roundhead or

Panhead.

8. Washers to suit fixing screws.

9. Suitable wall fixing (if required) to enable No.8

screws to screw securely into the mounting surface.

10.Soft faced mallet (to aid lid fitting).

D. INSTALLING THE SYSTEMTo ensure a safe installation, this product should be installed by a competent person, in accordance with the 16th Edition of the IEE Wiring Regulations (BS 7671).

INSTALLING TRUNKING CARRIERS

For each length of trunking:

1. When mounting trunking at skirting level, allowance should be made for the thickness of floor finish (i.e. carpet, wood blocks etc.) and a suitable gap left below the main carrier (or extension carrier when installing profile N), to accept this.

2. Cut Trunking Carrier, making dimensional allowance for fittings.

3. Both the Main Carrier (VTS/1 ALM) and the Extension Carrier (VTS/2 ALM) are pre-drilled at 300mm intervals along their length to facilitate screwing into the wall. See Note f.

4. Assemble appropriate fittings to carrier and then fix them to the wall havingprepared fixing holes in the wall. Fixings to be at 600mm centres and also at points within 100mm of each end.

5. For profile N repeat the above process having first clipped the Corner Extensions to their respective Corner Carriers.

6. For all further lengths of Trunking repeat the above sequence.

Note:a) On long runs of Trunking, allowance should be made for thermal expansion.

The fixing screws (fitted with suitable washers) should be screwed into the wall, tightened firmly, and then backed off slightly to allow for any movement of the Trunking that may take place. See MK Technical Data Guide.

b) Cut ends should be de-burred before installation.

c) Where possible commence installation at a corner position, having first attached the Corner Carrier to the Main Carrier.

d) Carrier Couplers must be placed at all junctions between carriers.

e) Secure earth carrier connector/braid to base carrier rail using quickfit brackets. Placing it astride any moulded corners or couplers.

f) When fitting the Extension Carrier (VTS2 ALM) to the Main Carrier (VTS1 ALM),earth/retaining screws (supplied) are to be screwed into the mating clip feature at each end and at 1000mm spacing, or at either side of a break in the trunking.

1 FITTING THE ACCESSORY MOUNTING BOXES

1. Determine location of the accessories (see note 1.)2. Remove appropriate knockouts/cutouts to suit cable entry.3. Insert optional push fit earth terminals (K3716) into boxes if required.4. If cables are crossing between compartments, cut the carrier as required A to suit Crossover Bridge

or B to suit Accessory Mounting Box. 5. Insert accessory mounting boxes and Crossover Bridge.

Note:i) The depth of the accessory to be installed will govern the depth of the mounting box used in each case.

It should be noted that:a) 35mm deep boxes cannot be mounted in the extended outer compartment of Profile N.b) When mounted into the centre compartment of all profiles, or the extension compartment of profile N,

the boxes reduce the available cross-sectional area for cables to pass behind the box, as follows:

CSA behind 25mm deep box in centre compartment = 1262 mm2

CSA behind 25mm deep box in extension compartment = 1215 mm2

CSA behind 35mm deep box in centre compartment = 604 mm2

ii) Install Cable Divider (VTS/50) if required to sub-divide compartments after fitting boxes. iii) Adjacent Outlet Boxes should not be less than 25mm apart for convenience when

positioning covers.iv) When mounting deep accessories, the base of the box can be cut out.v) A Cross Over Bridge is used to segregate cables when crossing the centre compartment.vi) When breaking between compartments care must be taken not to leave sharp edges

and the use of a short length of PVC conduit or trunking is recommended.

2

INSTALLING CABLES

Ensure electricity is switched OFF before connecting to any feeds and that it remains switched OFF until installation is complete.

Cables can now be laid into the appropriate trunking compartments.

1. When power cables are installed in the centre compartment, it is normal to install data cables in the outer compartments. When it is required to run cables from the centre compartment into Mini Trunking via Mini Trunking Adaptor, cable segregation can be achieved using a short length of Mini Trunking. For details please consult MK Technical Sales Service Department. (Tel. 01268 563720).

2. It is recommended that Cable Retainers (Straight - VTS/11 ALM and Square VTS/12 ALM) are clipped into the carrier to hold the cables in place prior to fitting covers. These should be placed at intervals of 750mm along the length of a run and within 100mm of all corners.

3 COMPLETING THE INSTALLATION

1. Fit Covers to all fittings (internal and external corners and joint covers) by locating them correctly in position and then pushing firmly until they snap into place.

2. Fit End Cap Covers by pushing them on from the front such that the clips slide behind the retainers and engage in the Main Carrier.

3. Fit Mini Trunking Adaptors by clipping onto the outer compartment of the Main Carrier at the required location.

4. The accessories can now be connected and installed in accordance with their individual installation instructions.

5. Test earth continuity to ensure bonding of metal parts comply with IEE Wiring Regulations.

4CUTTING TRUNKING COVERS

a. Cut Trunking Covers to suit application prior to fitting lid earth connector clips.

b. When cutting Trunking Covers, ends should be de-burred before installation.

c. Allowance should be made for space taken up by fittings i.e. Joint Covers, Boxes, Adaptors etc.

d. Fit lid earth connector clips at 500mm intervals, or to suit shorter trunking lengths, into both base clip features.

REMOVAL OF COVERS

1. Switch OFF the mains electricity supply before removal of Covers.2. Sequence of Cover removal:

a) Remove all Fitting Covers, Corners etc. This is achieved by levering under the edge of a fitting. Care should be taken to protect the surface against damage.

b) Remove accessories.c) The Trunking Covers can now be peeled back and away from the carrier(s).
