    NAVY NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

Highly advanced fuel system latest generation of submarines and aircraft

carriers will never need refueling. Navy reactors account for less than .01%

of all high level nuclear waste in the US.

Multiple redundant safety systems. Highly trained operators, top quality

materials, inherent stability and engineered safeguards.

    Reactor

Fission occurs when aneutron with a highenough energy is

    absorbed by a heavymass nucleus

An immense amount ofenergy is released

because of the breakupof attractive forces inthe nucleus

    Reactor

The fission of anucleus generatesimmense heat

Reactor water is underextremely highpressure to keep it aliquid

    Reactor water is

pumped in a closedloop to the steamgenerator

    Steam Generator and Turbines

The steam generator water is heated from the reactorwater, which boils it and turns it to steam

After water is converted to steam, high pressure forcesit out through piping to the turbines

The expansion of the steam occurs across two turbines:one is connected to an electric generator, one isconnected to the drive shaft

    Electric Generator

Turbo generator generateselectricity to powersystems around thesubmarine (lights, pumps,

    computers, weaponsystems, waterpurification, etc.)

Steam that passes throughthe turbine is cooled and

condensed by incomingseawater in a heatexchanger

    Main Turbine and Propeller

Amount of steam into main turbine controlled by main enginethrottle

Turbine spins extremely fast, so gearing is used to slow down shaftinput

A clutch is used to connect and disconnect generator the mainturbine or EPM to the driveshaft

    Steam Condensing and Return

Steam loses energy inturbine, but still veryhot

Condensed in a heatexchanger by seawater

    Condensed water(subcooled) is sent

back to steamgenerator to becomesteam again

    Battery, Motor Generators

    A redundancy system

Battery is charged by plant when operating

Battery discharges to operate EPM when plant isshutdown

Motor generators convert AC and DC
