Pressure and Temperature Controls

Armstrong pressure reducing valves (PRVs) and temperatureregulators help you manage steam, air and liquid systemssafely and efficiently. They assure also uninterruptedproductivity - by maintaining constant pressure or temperaturefor process control. In short, Armstrong regulators make usingresources safe and productive... as well as environmentallysound.

For decades, Armstrong has devoted itself to learning - andsharing - all it can about energy conservation as it relates tosteam equipment. As part of our product/service network, PRVsand temperature regulators represent expanded options for areliable Armstrong solution.

Pressure Reducing Valves

PRV TypesSteam, liquids and gases usually flow at high pressures to thepoints of final use. At these points, a pressure reducing valvelowers the pressure for safety and efficiency and to match therequirements of the application. There are two types ofpressure reducing valves offered by Armstrong:

Direct Acting. The simplest of PRVs, the direct acting typeoperates with convoluted bellows. Since it is self-contained, itdoes not need an external sensing line downstream to operate. It is the smallest and most economical of the two types and isdesigned for low to moderate flows. Accuracy of direct actingPRVs is typically ±10% of the downstream set point.

Externally Piloted. This type of PRV incorporates two valves -a pilot and a main valve - in one unit. The pilot valve has adesign similar to the direct acting valve. The discharge from thepilot valve acts on a set of double diaphragms, which controlsthrough a piston the opening of the main valve. This highdiaphragm area can open a larger main valve, allowing agreater capacity per line size than the direct acting regulators. In addition, the diaphragms are more sensitive to pressurechanges, and that means accuracy of ±1%. This greateraccuracy is also due to the location of the sensing line outsideof the valve, where there is less turbulence. This valve alsooffers the flexibility to use different types of pilot valves:pressure, temperature, air loaded, solenoid or combinations.

Convoluted phosphor bronze orstainless steel bellows allowssmaller body size thanconventional direct-actingdiaphragm PRVs.

Bronze or stainless steel body forcorrosion resistance.

Stainless steel stem and bronzeor stainless steel body minimizethe sticking common withconventional valves.

Hardened stainless steel valveand seat with spring return toassure tight shutoff.

Integral mesh strainer eliminatesfouling due to dirt.

Plastic cap does not absorb heatso it will not burn an operator’shands. Permits changing of set

pressure without tools. Simply liftcap and turn to desired setting.

Interchangeable range spring iseasily changed to different

pressure by removing four (4)cap screws.

Downstream pressure sensedoutside the bellows vs. inside,

which assures bellows integrityand longer bellows life.

Integral sensing port to eliminatepiping of external sensing line.

Externally Piloted

For Steam ServiceThis type of PRV incorporates two valves - a pilot and a mainvalve - in one unit. The pilot valve has a design similar to thedirect acting valve. The discharge from the pilot valve acts on aset of double diaphragms, which controls through a piston theopening of the main valve. This increased diaphragm area canopen a larger main valve, allowing a greater capacity per linesize than the internally piloted piston-operated valve.

In addition, the diaphragms are more sensitive to pressurechanges, which results in accuracy of ±1%. This greateraccuracy is due also to the positioning of the sensing linedownstream, where there is less turbulence. This valve alsooffers the flexibility to use different types of pilot valves:pressure, temperature, air loaded, solenoid or combination.

Interchangeable springs - regardlessof valve size - means more flexibilityin applications.

Enclosed spring chambereliminates dirt fouling.

Dual stainless steel diaphragmsprovide corrosion resistance.

All cast mating parts are maleand female to reduce the chanceof leaks at gasket surfaces andassure proper alignment.

Ductile iron body provides a widerrange of applications than cast ironand offers a less costly option tocast steel.

Available in both integral andremote mounted pilot.

Integral strainer protects the pilotvalve from failure due to dirt.

Easily removable copper tubingpermits troubleshooting while

valve is in-line.

Easy access to main valve forquick inspection or maintenance

by removing main valve springand screen and lifting valve from

stem. No special tools needed.

Design eliminates copper tubingfrom passing around the bottomdiaphragm housing, minimizing

chance of damage duringshipping or installation.

GP-2000 ON/OFF - For Steam Service

External Pilot Solenoid Operated ValvesThe GP-2000 On/Off option allows for remote shutoff ofpressure reducing valves. Automatic shutoff during powerfailures and shutoff based on set points of pressure, temperature or liquid levels of process fluids. This option isavailable as an accessory item or may be factory installed onany of the GP-2000 Series valves. The GP-2000 On/Off isdesigned for a maximum pressure of 10 barg and a maximumtemperature of 186°C, coil: 220V standard. Available withnormally open or normally closed solenoid valves.

Non-Electric Gradient Monitoring Option(Between Water and Steam Pressure) The GP-2000W1P provides a safe and dependable shutdown ofsteam when the water pressure falls or drops rapidly on aconstant pressure, steam-to-water exchanger. Unlike a solenoidoption that shuts the steam down when the water pressuredrops below a pre-set point, the GP-2000W1P always maintainsa constant steam pressure until water pressure drops to within0,2 barg above the steam pressure. Lower water pressure willcause the steam pressure to fall, thereby maintaining aminimum 0,2 barg difference. This will allow the exchanger toproduce hot water even when water pressure is low, andensures that steam pressure will stay functional as long aswater pressure is above 0,2 barg.

Noise Treatment OSHA has established limits on the length of time anyemployee may be exposed to various sound levels. A soundlevel of 85 Dba or less is the acceptable standard for noiselevels through a PRV in most applications. Certain facilities mayrequire much less. Please consult Armstrong PRV SizingSoftware or contact your local Representative for Dba levels foreach application.

For Dba levels above 85 you can offer a 2" thick insulationcover for thermal conductivity and noise attenuation, a mufflingorifice plate to reduce the velocity through the PRV, or acombination of both.

A muffling orifice plate consists of a 1/4" thick stainless steelplate installed between mating ANSI flanges. The orifice plate isinstalled in the enlarged piping downstream of the pressureregulator. Each orifice plate is engineered for specificapplications to maximize noise reduction without reducingregulator capacity.

Consult Factory Representative for muffling orifice plate sizeand pricing.

Application Data - Pressure Reducing Valves

This piping application is used when the pressure turndownratio is greater than that of a single valve. Pressure reduction isaccomplished by using two valves in series to reduce thepressure in stages. Depending on the volume of fluid requiredand pressure reduction, the second stage valve typically will belarger in size than the first stage valve.

Unless a specific intermediate pressure of the fluid is required, this intermediate pressure is typically selected so as to keep thepressure turndown ratios of both valves as similar as possible. This will help equalize and maximize the service life of bothvalves.

External Pressure Pilot One-Third toTwo-Third Reduction StationThis piping application is used when theflow rangeability is greater than that of asingle valve. Better control is achieved bypiping two valves in parallel and sizing oneto handle 1/3 the maximum load and theother 2/3 the maximum load. These twovalves are staged by offsetting theirpressure set points by 0,2 barg. Thesmaller valve is usually the lead valve andwould have a pressure set point at thedesired pressure. The larger valve isusually the lag valve and would have apressure set point of 0,2 barg below thelead valve. This offset of set points willstage the valves so that the lag valve willremain closed until the lead valve can nolonger pass the required flow and is wideopen. This lack of flow will cause the setpressure to drop slightly until the lag valveopens and regulates at the higher demandsof flow.

DS-1 & DS-2 Cyclone Separator

For Steam and Compressed AirCondensate in steam and air lines reduces thermal efficiency, causes water hammers, corrodes equipment such as valvesand pipes and creates other problems.

Drain Separators DS-1 (1/2” to 2” screwed or with screwed onflanges) and DS-2 (DN65 to DN100 flanged) separate waterefficiently by using the centrifugal force of steam or air createdby shaped path. The simple design of the separator, using aspecific nozzle, minimizes the pressure loss, allowing clean, drysteam or air to be fed to equipment.

Features- A cyclone structure maximizes liquid separation efficiency. - Pressure loss is extremely low. - No moving parts means no breakdowns.

Operating PrincipleWhen steam or air flow enters the drain separator as shown inthe figure at the left, centrifugal force is generated in the fluidbecause of the device's internal structural design. The fluiddrains along the wall because of the difference in specificgravity with steam or air, eventually striking the baffle. Thebaffle guides the fluid to the drain outlet and to the trap, whichdrains it.

OBK-2000

Pneumatic Temperature PilotA compact pneumatic temperature pilot with broad temperatureranges, the OBK-2000 can be remotely located away from theregulator valve, an advantage not available with a conventionalcapillary system.

Typical applications include instantaneous or storage tank waterheaters, air make-up units and manufacturing processoperations such as parts washing, die casting and plasticmolding.

Capable of reverse or direct-acting operation, the OBK-2000features a simple design with fewer moving parts for troublefree operation. Other features include supply and controlpressure gauges, a rugged cast brass housing, and precise andrapid response to temperature changes. Brass, stainless steelbulbs and separate wells are available.

Reverse-Acting Operation - For HeatingDuring operation, a temperature change in the medium beingcontrolled creates a change in the length of the sensitivity tube.An increase in temperature lengthens the sensitivity tube (1)and moves the invar rod (2) from the lever (3). The lever pivotsat point B and is moved so the exhaust valve (4) is opened bythe spring at (D). This lever action decreases the supply air atpoint (S) in the control line at point (R) and closes the regulatorvalve. A decrease in temperature shortens the sensitivity tube atpoint (1) and moves the invar rod against the lever point (3).The lever at this point moves against the spring at point (D) toclose the exhaust valve at point (4). This lever action increasesthe pressure in the control line at point (R) and opens the valve.

The sensitivity adjustment screw at point (6) regulates the rateof flow of the supply air to the controller to a change intemperature. Turning the screw clockwise increases thesensitivity by reducing the flow and increasing the responsetime. Turning the screw counterclockwise decreases thesensitivity by increasing flow and reducing the response time.Valve closes on air failure, making it fail-safe.

OB-30, OB-2000, OB-2000PT

For Steam ServicePoints to remember when installing:

• Drain condensate at inlet of pressure/temperatureregulator with inverted bucket steam trap.

• Protect temperature regulating valve from dirt and scaleby installing strainer with 100 mesh screen at inlet ofvalve.

• Install shutoff valves on either side of the regulatingvalve along with a by-pass line for maintenancepurposes.

• Install vacuum breaker after the outlet of equipment andbefore the steam trap.

• Install sensor so it is fully immersed in the fluid beingheated.

• If temperature well is used, apply heat transfer mediumto sensor before insertion into well.

• Place thermometer into system in close proximity totemperature sensor for accurate valve adjustment.

• If possible, do not elevate condensate after steam trap.• Determine pressure setting before temperature setting

(OB-2000PT only).

Control Valve

Erratic control. Costly maintenance. And a valve that “hunts”because it can’t find its set point. They’re familiar control valveproblems. And the all-too-familiar solution? Overkill. Pay morethan you should for a valve that does more than it needs to.

Too often, matching a valve to an application is a matter oftaking what you can get to do the job – an oversized actuator, for instance. Instead of getting what you need. Inefficient? Ofcourse, but until now it’s also been unavoidable.

Accuracy and Control That’s Not Overpriced… or OverkillThe Armstrong control valve gives you exactly what you need toapply the right valve to an application: flexibility. It fills the voidleft by expensive industrial valves that can’t deliver the control

you must have. Designed for steam and hot water service, theArmstrong valve is ideally suited to non-freezing applications inthe 1/2" to 1 1/2" range: reheat coils, pipe coils, food dryers, meat smokers, corrugators, laundry and food processingequipment – to name a few.

The standard Armstrong control valve is reverse acting with aspring return. It uses air to open and fails closed (air to closeavailable – consult factory). The valve meets the vast majorityof typical control valve applications without sacrificingrangeability (minimum controllable flow).

Note: For water service, the valve must be piped in reverse.

Years of successful performancein rigorous steam controlapplications ensures reliability onthe job.

Repairs quickly withoutdismantling the piping.

All trim parts are stainless steelor brass. That means long lifeand reliability – no corrosion todamage the valve or affectperformance.

Unique parabolic plug providesaccurate modulation of flow overcomplete valve stroke.

Externally adjustable start point (1/2" & 3/4"size only) is standard on pneumatic

operator – saves operator time and effort.

Dacron-reinforced siliconediaphragm is fatigue and

temperature resistant.

Standard reverse-acting designwith spring return uses air to

open so it fails closed. (Direct-acting available as an option.)

Suitable for a wide range ofapplications in the 1/2" to 1 1/2"

pipe size range.

Control Valve Selection

Accuracy by Design – Not by AccidentThe secret of accurate control is making sure a valve’s controlcharacteristics match the application. When they do, the valvecontrols accurately (without hunting) and performs reliably. When there’s no match, the valve simply cannot do what theapplication demands.

Armstrong uses a modified parabolic plug to handleexceptionally low output. The modification of true linearcharacteristics provides more precise control when capacityrequirements are very low and the valve is just cracked off theseat. Notice in Figure 249-1 that at point A on the curve morethan half the valve stroke is devoted to 40% of the unit’scapacity. At point B, 1/4 of the stroke is devoted to only 10% ofcapacity. At point C, 10% of the stroke covers less than 5% ofthe unit’s capacity.

How low can the unit control? Table 250-1 on page 250tabulates this function, called rangeability. Rangeability is theratio between the maximum controllable flow and the minimumcontrollable flow through the valve. The higher the rangeabilityof a valve, the more accurately it can control flow when lowoutput is required. If rangeability is too low, the valve will “hunt”excessively when low output is required.

To calculate minimum flow, simply multiply Cv by thepercentages shown in the table. For example, a 5/16" orifice inan ACV-02 has a Cv of 2,5. The lowest output that can becontrolled is 2% of maximum flow.

Modified linear characteristics curve for valves used undermodulating control. The modification of true linearcharacteristics provides more precise control when capacityrequirements are very low and the valve is just cracked off theseat.

Parabolic plug valve configuration permits accurate modulationof flow over the complete stroke of the valve.
