An ode to the image « As we move around going about our daily routine, we are unable
to properly appreciate the visual show which is offered up to us
each day ». Here, viewers are invited to take the time to look,
to appreciate each image. A real ode to visual art, this itinerary
incites viewers to take a different perspective, to mix their own
vision with that of the artist. Ulla Reimer transports us to her
universe, to her visual perception of these villages and what
they inspire in her, what she feels, her Vision.
Itinerary of images through six villagesFrom 18th July 2013 to 30th September 2015, the Community
of Communes of the Pays de Rhône et Ouvèze is offering the
public the chance to discover 12 outdoor artistic installations
of black and white images. The villages of Bédarrides, Cade-
rousse, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Courthézon, Jonquières and
Sorgues have inspired the artist Ulla Reimer, and the result of
this artistic work is presented through 2 installations in each
village.
Ulla Reimer, from photography to visual artVision is also the fruit of an artistic evolution: from photogra-
phy to visual art. Forty years ago Ulla Reimer, an international
photographer, acquired her very first camera, at the age of 16.
Since then, her passion for the image has remained undimini-
shed. A photojournalist to begin with, it was only later that Ulla
decided to devote herself exclusively to her true passion: art
photography. Over the years her work has evolved more towar-
ds minimalism and the abstract.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape Tourisme The project provides an artistic insight into the reality of the re-
gion. Photos showing elements of the area’s heritage, of stone,
are placed alongside more industrial images, such as those of wi-
negrowing techniques. This is the reality of the region, and what
gives it its dynamism. Far from the “picture postcard” villages,
our territory lives, moves and is part of an economic reality. At
the heart of Provence and the Châteauneuf du Pape and Côtes du
Rhône appellations, it is one of the South of France’s leading wine
tourism destinations. An array of activities is offered to visitors
who wish to discover our wines: tastings, winery tours, food and
wine pairing, tours of the vineyard on foot, on bike.

... The force of habit and the routine of getting around, coupled
with our current society’s lifestyle, contribute to preventing us
from strolling and taking time to look and observe. It is however
precisely during these very moments that everything around us
takes on aesthetic meaning. Try going for a walk in a village
that you often travel through, with the intention to stroll. You
won’t see the same things; it will be easier to enjoy the visual
“sights”. In the first place, this circuit provides an opportunity to
(re)discover our surroundings.
Furthermore, the V i s i o n circuit provides insight into the way
Ulla Reimer sees the world. It is indeed about observing and
not transforming. The images are hardly retouched at all. Most
of the work was done during shooting. Viewers will see the
images just as the artist saw them during her wanderings around
the area, those very same images that can be seen when our
cultural shackles are cast off before looking. Visitors will have
the opportunity to see our area through the eyes of Ulla Reimer.
Ulla Reimer invites viewers to combine their own vision with hers,
by contemplating the images. Concentrate on what the images
evoke and what they inspire. It doesn’t matter if the viewer feels
that they are “beautiful” or not, the only important thing is to
concentrate on feelings. For Ulla Reimer, images are a source of
emotion. She not only draws on it, but reflects it. A very clean and
simple image can express a lot and convey many emotions.
The process of artistic photography is very different than that of
reporting. For this project, Ulla first wanted to know what the
villages were like and what their themes and particularities were,
in order to get to know them better. Then she began to rove around
with her camera in hand, and it was only then that she began
shooting. The images therefore express feelings. They are not
just simple photographs of villages; they are filled with emotion,
Ulla Reimer’s emotion. Sometimes joyous, sometimes agonizing,
will viewers perceive it? The artist hopes that viewers will enjoy
the photographs before reading about her own interpretation,
because it is important to her that viewers simply... look.

V i s i o n is a 12-step circuit of installations featuring B&W images of the 6 municipalities that make up the Pays de Rhône et d’Ouvèze community of communes: Bédarrides, Caderousse, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Courthézon, Jonquières, and Sorgues. Elected officials from the Pays
de Rhône et d’Ouvèze community of communes wanted each
municipality to be depicted in an artistic manner through the
eyes of Ulla Reimer.
The term “installations” is used because the images are not
just “displayed”, they are staged. In each municipality, two ins-
tallations were designed based on shots of the host village, and
were staged in accordance with the selected location for the
installation.
The outdoor staging adds a special dimension to the project.
Indeed, light plays an additional role in the expression of the
image. The artist encourages viewers to see the installations
in the morning light, and to return in the evening light. The two
sights are entirely different.
All of the works feature a small aluminum plaque indicating
the project, with a QR code providing access to the artist’s ex-
planations.
SynOPSIS Of ThE CIRCUIT
In all,
the project
consists of
71 B&W images,
a range of artistic
interpretations
of the area.

Comment from the artist:As I was strolling through the vineyards this winter, shortly after pruning, I was struck by the remarkable shapes of the grape vines. When I looked closer, in the beautiful morning light, these grape vines took on the shape of dancers. So I sought out the most original vines in order to make them dance on «film». Le quai de l’Ouvèze seemed to be the perfect location to stage these images. For me, it was also a way to underline the fact that a music festival will be held in early August, for which a pianist will be set up in the bed of the Ouvèze river. This frieze is like a musical score, and this installation provides a link between wine, music, water and poetry.
BédARRIdES
InSTALLATIOn 1 Ballade deS vigneS
Installation on the Ouveze Banks
Frieze with 10 images (1 m high x 26 m long).
Vinyl mounted on forex panels.
Comment from the artist:There is much more to Bédarrides than leisure activities, boat outings, the piano festival and wine. In this village, I was inspired by the geo-metry of the buildings, and a particular nostalgic atmosphere that I felt during my strolls. I stopped in front of a disused factory and although it was abandoned, energy could be perceived there. A strange impression could be felt - a combination of the past and present, of the apocalypse and romanti-cism. This emotion is expressed on two diptychs, installed at the top of a decommissioned building, one that remains beautiful nonetheless. This composition of images should be read from left to right. The first diptych symbolizes taking flight, freedom, hope. The torso symbolizes mankind, the heart, life force...The second diptych: The first is a single image that highlights the inte-rior/exterior contrast, the past and present. The other image symbo-lizes sight, the way we look at all of that.
InSTALLATIOn 2 le temPS qui PaSSe
Installation on the Château d’eau roundabout
This installation consists
of two diptychs:
2 images: 150 cm x 64 cm each
2 images: 150 cm x 225 cm and 150 cm x 55 cm
The works are printed on vinyl and
and mounted on dibond panels.
The theme here is a very personal one for the artist.
These shots were taken at the abandoned
Mac’ Ani factory in Bédarrides. The work is about
the past, the future, and the passage of time.

Comment from the artist:In Caderousse, I was struck by the history of water. Water as a vital force, but also as a devastating element capable of taking life. And of course, water through its soothing effects when watching the current, listening to the sound. The idea here was to show the contradiction between violence and peace, between quiet gurgling and low rumbling. Water has many fa-cets, and I liked the idea of showing them in this location, the wash house.I wouldn’t have been able to create this installation if it weren’t for the tour of the hydroelectric plant, where I came face to face with the enor-mous power of water.
CAdEROUSSE
InSTALLATIOn 3 COuRant
Installation at the wash house at Cours Aristide Briand
This installation features two photographs
in the back, each 90 x 300 cm,
and a frieze with 8 photographs, each 40 x 46 cm,
vinyl mounted on forex.
The images in the back are shots of the Rhône river,
near the Caderousse hydroelectric plant.
The photographs on the wall in front are of the wash house,
water inside the factory, and the old pump
that was used for floods
and which is now on display in the Caderousse town center.
This project is about water management,
both domestic (wash house), and industrial (factory).
Comment from the artist :The installation on the dike naturally reflects the desire to represent water. The dike protects the town center from floods, and the town center is home to a magnificent church. For me, it was important to connect the mystical to a reality. To experience this installation, you have to “delve” into it, wrap around it, and take time to explore it. From below, the perspective leads to the top of the dike, and symbolically, towards infinity... If I’m looking from the top of the dike, the reality shown by the elements of the church gives an impression of water flowing on the large image. Spirituality and reality in harmony.
InSTALLATIOn 4 Réalité déPaSSée
Installation on the grassy embankment
The installation is on a wooden box, set on the dike.
The dimensions of the large photograph are 156 cm x 240 cm
and the other one is 156 cm x 44 cm. Both are vinyl prints
mounted on dibond.
They are images of the Ancezune Chapel.

Comment from the artist:For me, Châteauneuf-du-Pape is about the vineyards and the castle. I loved Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the winter. Winter paves the way for emptiness. The fields are bare, everything is clean. These two images are installed on a dry stone wall. The first one re-flects the material of the arch, with just a sliver of light that delicately illuminates the building. The other image features the very special ligh-ting in the south, outlining the purity of the vineyards, revealing only the essential. Both images bring to mind the clean sense of sight, the sensation of blowing wind, and the capacity to hear the grape vines growing. I hope that viewers will let themselves go past the abstract, in order to create their own space. The stone benches in the square are conducive to taking a break and enjoying a moment’s daydream.

InSTALLATIOn 5 Yin et Yang
Installation on the hill leading up to the castle.
Yin et Yang consists of two images with identical characteristics:
200 cm x 135 cm, vinyl prints mounted on dibond. The white
image is a photograph of the vineyards,
and the black one is a shot of the entrance
to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape castle.
Comment from the artist:The work was done backwards here. I was particularly inspired by this location and I really wanted to use this wall. We were lucky enough to receive the owners’ consent. I wanted to take advantage of this fabulous view of the castle, and the fact that the installation would be in the line of sight of the castle when driving up. Then I had the idea to work on the clouds and sky. On this image, the church is very dark. Churches bring up very particular things in me. I often photograph them with dark, threatening skies, to reflect what I feel.
InSTALLATIOn 6
Installation on the road to Orange in Châteauneuf-du-Pape
This photomontage consists of 4 photographs:
two are 156 cm x 156 cm and two are 156 cm x 80 cm.
The photos were taken at the St Pierre
de Luxembourg chapel.
It is a single photograph that has been cut up.
page 9
Comment from the artist:In Courthézon, I felt that these ramparts held great significance. They were attractive, powerful and gigantic at the same time. I let myself get carried away by the feeling of an imaginary exploration of these imposing walls, and what they might whisper in my ears. I took a lot of shots, which is unusual for me. I felt like these walls were pulling and directing me to explore the slightest details with my lens, down to the machicolations that finally ended up embodying my idea and my thoughts on this installation. This installation consists of three images. The underlying theme is the bird, who tells us about the ramparts. On one side, the bird is pictured in a very dark, mystical photo, soaring over these huge walls. On the other side, the bird introduces the composition of images. The bird symbolizes a return to the past. Here, the bird is the portal to the past. In Indian culture, birds play a role in the transformation of the soul. The bird symbolizes dreams. The purpose of this photomontage is to delve into history, and to bring out the protective aspect of the ramparts. The photomontage underscores the fact that these ramparts had to be demolished, and then rebuilt. I worked on two aspects of the ramparts: fluidity, where the stone seems to be like water, and an em-phasis on the rigidness of the stone. Viewers will discover a face. For me, the face is looking towards that which becomes gentle. It symbolizes the passage from the past (har-der) towards the future (gentler).
COURThézOn
InSTALLATIOn 7 au-deSSuS de tOut
Installation at the look-out
The bird is a blueback paper print,
it measures 135 x 80 cm.
The large image was printed on vinyl
and mounted on dibond. It is 4 m x 135 cm.
On the opposite side is a vinyl print mounted
on dibond, 180 x 120 cm.
Comment from the artist:Here, I wanted to express a reflection in nature. In my opinion, it was in-teresting to take an approach to heritage using reflection. By looking to the puddles, rivers and water as an element of reflection, it is possible to see things in a different light, allowing the imaginary to come out, as well as daydreams.
InSTALLATIOn 8 dOux déCalage
Installation at Val Seille Castle
This image is a vinyl print mounted on dibond. It measures
156 cm x 260 cm and is slightly concave.
The photograph is a reflection of one of the gates
of Courthézon’s ramparts, in the small river
that surrounds the village.
page 10
Comment from the artist:Train stations have always appealed to me. Here I wanted to illustrate movement. Via Venaissia and the bicycle inspired me to do a more abstract rendering of the bicycle, in greater detail, to express speed. I wanted to take the project even further and develop the idea, and why not create a “freeze frame» based on this train station. These images are presented in a diptych, with a little space between them. The movement could be two trains departing in opposite direc-tions.
JOnqUIèRES
InSTALLATIOn 9 SPeed
Installation at the station
The bicycles diptych consists of two images
printed on vinyl and mounted on dibond.
The dimensions of the panels are 156 cm x 180 cm.
The three images on the façade of the
building near Via Venaissia
are printed on blueback paper. All three
are the same size: 295 cm x 152 cm.
Comment from the artist:Although these photographs are more traditional, I think that this ins-tallation is very interesting. Light plays a major role, and the shadow and light effects are very significant. The images come to life with pas-sersby and cars that drive by, they are reflected in the image. The sha-dows also highlight another part of the image at all times. It is a natural presentation that is well integrated into the village life.
InSTALLATIOn 10 BlaCK
Installation at the intersection of
Avenue des Bourgades and Avenue de la Libération
This triptych consists of three images,
two of which are the same size (140 x 80 cm)
and one that is 140 cm x 200 cm.
All three are vinyl prints
mounted on forex panels,
installed on a black background.
page 11
Comment from the artist:These two images were the source of the development of this project. When I took this photo for tourism purposes, the idea came to me about showing my vision in black in white. The location was determined based on the light effects that this room offers. The reflection of the bars provides for different images all throughout the day. This installation was designed to establish harmony between the fixed image and the shadow moving with the sun. It is a visual sight with differing expressions from one hour to the next. This installation is particularly captivating between 1 pm and 7 pm. A video will soon be posted to the FB page for those who don’t have the opportunity to experience it themselves.
SORgUES
InSTALLATIOn 11 veRtiCal-HORizOntal
Installation in the covered market
These images are
vinyl prints mounted on dibond.
They are all the same size:
210 cm x 126 cm
Comment from the artist:This installation was designed to highlight the village’s paddle wheels, which the City Hall intends to renovate. The selected location won us over thanks to its intimist layout. All of the shots were taken at the double paddle wheel on Route de Ve-dène. The idea here was to bring the static wheels back to life, through strong emotion, yet without necessarily expressing any particular ex-planation, just bringing up a feeling of letting go.This is the last installation, the final one on the circuit.
InSTALLATIOn 12 POème à Cinq veRS
Installation on Place Charles De Gaulle
This frieze consists of 21 photographs
printed on vinyl and mounted on forex.
One photograph measures
50 cm x 24 cm and the other 20 are
24 cm x 32 cm.

1973 PhotoreporterIn 1973, at the age of 16, Ulla Reimer helped at local daily news-
paper office based in Frankfort, Germany. She accepted to do
an article on the city. Her senior colleagues were surprised at
her remarkable and unique talent at such a young age. They
continued giving her odd jobs, and encouraged her to continue.
She continued on to become a worldwide photo journalist.
1973 – 1986 On / Offln 1973, Ulla Reimer was sent to Rome to photograph Sophia
Loren.
Touched by her style, Sophia Loren hired her to become her
personal photographer to cover the opening of her film and
filming of her second. She also covered many musical events
with artists such as The Rolling Stones, Ella Fitzegarld. One
year later, she went on to become special photographer and
portraitist for a number of well-known worldwide movie stars
and film companies.
1989 Série noireHer first personal artistic series that was influenced by the ci-
nema. Ulla opted for a particular method to color her images,
dating from the early 20th century. She used translucent aqua-
relle on her prints, obtaining a color which became one with the
images. This method was considered unique at the time. Her
work was exhibited for the first time at Lucernaire, the national
art complex in Paris.

Ulla Reimer : 40 years of photography
Ulla Reimer bought her
first camera 40 years
ago at the age of 16
and never stopped taking
photos ever since.first a reporter; she then became a worldwide
portraitist especially of actors and film directors in
hollywood and finally dedicated herself to her inner
passion art work.
She has taken place in many exhibitions throughout
the world, mainly Japan, China, USA, germany, Korea
and france where she has spent the most of her life.
from the beginning, she has always been interested
in lines and architecture. Although her passion for the
magical atmosphere around the development process
in the dark room has neither extinguished, her recent
work has evolved as she now uses both analogical and
digital cameras.
Over the past years her images used to show mise-en-
scene with an architectural background. nowadays her
work goes towards more minimalism and abstraction
and spiritual work Maybe a sign that getting older; one
leaves aside the unnecessary to concentrate on the
very heart of things.
...
page 13
1991 Être ou ne pas Paraître1991, Ulla did a series as an homage to surrealistic painters.
lt was a photography wizardry as each image were taken
with only one shot using artificial lighting without prop or
superposing.
«ETRE ou ne pas paraître» is an invitation to share emotions,
dreams, interrogation and spiritual quest.
1993 - 1995 eclairsEclairs represents 160 shots taken over 3 years. After a trial
run of one week in Arizona at the unused airplane depot,
Lufthansa was convinced by Ulla’s talent and decided to spon-
sor her work and associate the exhibition to their collection of
Max Ernst.
Thanks to the sponsorship and the freedom given to her by Luf-
thansa, Editions Cantz edited these series of four themes.
1998 JaléoThese series of image showed yet again a new vision of Ulla
Reimer work, always ahead and constantly renewing her tech-
niques. The images were breath of fresh air in the world of pho-
tography, contemporary and pure.
For the first time, the images developed in the dark room by
Ulla presented her images directly on unframed foam-backed
plywood. Today this technique is use often but at the time, she
was one of the first using this method.
2009 RencontreEven though Ulla is trained Analogical Photographer and loves
the atmosphere of working in the dark room, which for her is
magic and unique. She has moved on to the use of digital pho-
tography combining both methods in her work.
«Rencontre» is the combination of two technical universes
(analog and digital), and a poetic approach of poesy, inspired by
l’été, a novel of Albert Camus and his description about light in
the south of France.
2010 Highway to edenA singular light: its variations construct, deconstruct, recons-
truct, and purify the vista that unfolds from black to white
through all ranges of grey. These contrasts order the images
with a surprising equilibrium. An unexpected opening carves
urban elements with celestial apertures; these unique fra-
mings destabilize our first impression. Multiple interpretations
that are infinitely enriched by a flow of perceptions - clouds or
nuances - reveal new meanings to our sensibility.
.../...
page 14
2010 - 2011 (in)OrganiqueIn 2009 during a humanitarian project Ulla met Caroline Carles.
Seeing the work of Caroline, Ulla is amazed by the sensibility
and the images that emerge, however, carried out with extreme
rigor of reflection. lt will offer a year later to Caroline to
Combine their work in joint exhibitions.
2012 South KoreaThe year 2012 brought Ulla to Seoul in South Korea where she
loves the atmosphere and found strong inspiration. Fascinated
by the culture and language, the dynamic people, she decided
to move for a while to Seoul working on new projects.
2012 Yin and YangThe Korean flag, and particularly the yin and yang symbol, was
a strong inspiration for this series. Yin and yang sound oppo-
sing forces but they are complementary forces. For example,
light cannot be understood if darkness doesn’t exist, and sha-
dow cannot exist without light. Most of her artworks combine
nature and artificial objects and that make the mutual whole.
For Ulla, Yin and yang is a mystery that makes her discover this
city, paint her grey palette with colors and express new things
with freedom.
page 15
... Shots of the area’s architectural heritage are combined
with more modern photographs, such as the CNR factory in
Caderousse. It is the reality of the area, and what gives it mo-
mentum. Far removed from the “postcard” villages, our area
is a living, moving region with an economic reality. Industrial
and modern life coexists alongside more traditional economic
activities such as winegrowing.
Located in Provence, in the Vaucluse department, Châteauneuf
du Pape Tourisme encompasses six villages: Bédarrides, Ca-
derousse, Châteauneuf du Pape, Courthézon, Jonquières and
Sorgues. Located in the very heart of the Châteauneuf du Pape
and Côtes du Rhône appellations, our area is a leading wine
tourism destination in the south of France. Visitors interested
in learning about our wines can choose from a range of activi-
ties: tasting, estate tours, wine and food pairing, exploring the
vineyards on foot or by bicycle, etc.
Ideally located a short distance from Avignon and Orange, our
area also has a strong cultural momentum. Our small Proven-
çal villages have retained their typical characteristics, providing
an opportunity for visitors to experience the authentic side of La
Provence.
The Mediterranean climate that prevails here also makes the
area an excellent destination for outdoor leisure activities.
