DVC to Build and Create Success through Innovationand Entrepreneurship
Professor David Ngo has been appointed at the foundation Deputy Vice-Chancellor(Research & Higher Degrees) at Sunway University College (Sunway). This new
appointment is in line with the objectives set out in Sunways Strategic Plan andResearch Management Plan. Professor Ngo took up the position in June of this year. The
primary role as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Higher Degrees) is to provideeffective leadership to improve the quality, impact, and productivity of research and
research training in the University.
The Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Higher Degrees) includes aResearch Office to support and facilitate the development of research, and a Higher
Degrees directorate to facilitate the development of and provide quality assuranceoversight for higher degrees at Sunway.
The tripartite function of Research Office is to facilitate (1) research into
multidisciplinary, niche, high-impact, and commercial-valued areas; (2) development of proof-of-concept to bridge the gap between design and product; and (3)
commercialisation of intellectual property that has high novelty, inventiveness andindustrial applicability.
In outlining his ideas for the development of research at Sunway, Professor Ngo stated:
Our philosophy is to build and create our way to success with innovation and
entrepreneurship. We want to acknowledge the existing work that is well underway, andthen build on it. Since the inception of Sunway University College, many members of
academic staff have been contributing significantly to a rich research portfolio in business, creative arts and communication, computer technology, health and natural
sciences, and hospitality, tourism and leisure management. We wish to piggyback onthese capabilities to create new innovations in humanised technology and business,
making technology products and business models niche and relevant.
Conducting High-Impact Research: Significant research in organisational psychologyand human resource management has been carried out by the Department of Psychology.
In the field of ICT, the School of Computer Technology provides the expertise andleadership in interactive advertising, peer-to-peer database synchronization and pervasive
computing.
Sunway wishes to increase the visibility, accessibility, readership and quality of itsSunway Academic Journal. The journal has been indexed and abstracted in ProQuest, a
recognition of our scientific standards. Over the years, it has been providing a quality

platform for researchers to disseminate high-impact scientific information to thecommunity.
Providing Relevant Consultancy: Many of our research projects are of relevance to
industry and the community. We hope to forge closer ties with the public and private
sectors to help them solve their problems in priority fields such as information andcommunication technology, health, and business using the latest and most appropriatetechnologies and solutions.
Attracting Top Talent: Under the Jeffrey Cheah Foundation, a non-profit charitable
foundation that was set up in 2010, we will continue to award scholarships and researchgrants to worthy talent in various fields of study, and support institutional development.
New initiatives that we will ask the Foundation to support include professorial chairs andassociated research teams, centres of excellence and research institutes, proof-of-concept
centres and technology oriented start-up companies, postdoctoral and visitingfellowships, and postgraduate scholarships to attract and develop top research talent.
Promoting Research Collaboration: Our international collaboration has been fruitful; it
encourages authorship productivity and enhances article quality. We will continue tostrengthen existing research networks and promote new research collaboration with top
institutions of higher learning.
Harvesting Viable Ideas: Sunway will try to find investors and business peopleinterested in developing our innovations and exploring their commercial viability. The
Office of the DVC will be aligned with the School of Business to allow researchers andbusiness students to work together closely.
Developing Innovative Programmes: Through the Higher Degrees Directorate, we will
continue to build on the existing postgraduate programmes in technology and business,and create new programmes that are practical, relevant, industry-linked, and
entrepreneurial through public-private, industry-academia partnerships.
We are well positioned to deliver quality education, particularly in view of the partnerships we have with world-class institutions like Lancaster University, Victoria
University, Manchester Business School, Le Cordon Bleu, and others. Ongoing dialogueswith outstanding experts from Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan School of
Management and others through the Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah Distinguished Speakers Serieswill continue to provide ideas and suggestions for continuous improvement of our
programs.
Forging Effective Partnerships. We are also eager to broaden our partnerships withlocal and international organisations, and industry and government bodies, from which
we have benefited enormously through community and consultancy projects by facultymembers, professional and industrial training for students, and industrial advisory panels
of schools.
