EXHIBITION LAUNCHBIKO: THE QUEST FOR A TRUE HUMANITY

“We have set out on a quest for true humanity, and somewhere on the distant horizon we can see

the glittering prize. Let us march forth with courage and determination, drawing strength from

our common brotherhood. In time we shall be in the position to bestow upon South Africa the

greatest gift possible—a more human face.”

-Steve Biko

As part of the ongoing commemoration of the 37th anniversary of the death in

detention of Bantu Stephen Biko, the Steve Biko Foundation in partnership withDitsong National Museum of Cultural History, will launch the exhibition‘BIKO:

THE QUEST FOR A TURE HUMANITY’. The exhibition is staged in honour of

Biko and the contributions made by many others who lost their lives in South

Africa’s liberation struggle.

The Quest for a True Humanitywas developed in 2007 by the Steve Biko

Foundation in partnership with the Apartheid Museum and the National

Department of Education. Since its creation, the exhibition has toured a number

of venues in South Africa and Germany.

Based on original historical research,The Quest for a True Humanityprovides

detailed insight into Biko’s philosophy and his impact on South African life. It

explores the African intellectual tradition from which Biko emerged; the

formation of the South African Students Organisation; and the impact of Black

Consciousness, which defined the 1970s, becoming “an attitude of mind, a way

of life” for many. The exhibition further surveys contemporary views of Biko’s

legacy and his relevance to a new generation of young people.

Making use of original photographs, documents and audio-visual pieces, theexhibition draws on interviews with a range of Biko’s contemporaries and

features leaders such as Strini Moodley, Winifred Kgware and Barney Pityana

among many others.

The exhibition will remain at Ditsong Cultural History Museum through May

2015. Following the launch ofThe Quest for a True Humanitywill be a National

Heritage Council dialogue on social cohesion. Both events will be presided over

by the Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Nathi Mthetwa.
