ith an increase of 8.4%, the French marine industries continued their progression in 2006
at a steadier pace than that of the world market, reaching a turnover of p1,166 million
compared to p1,076 million in 2005.
marine industry trends
Growth supported by exports
In 2006, sailboat production generated a turnover of p691 million, increasing by 8.3%, while the motor boat
production, up 9.8%, rose to p398 million.
These results allowed France to reinforce its position as world leader in sailboat production and continue
its progression in the motor boat market where it now holds fourth place. For a number of years, the French
marine industry has been exporting a significant share of its production ; the export rate rose to 63% in 2006
(73% for sailboats and 55% for motor boats).
Since 1998 when, the proportion of export sales to domestic sales reversed for the first time, the total
turnover made on the international market, in this way, was multiplied by more than three, rising from
p222 million to p735 million.
For sustainable development in the yachting industry
Attentive to sustainable development in the yachting industry, the French Nautical Industries Federation
(FIN) created the Bateau bleu© Programme, starting 2005, to promote boats, equipment and concepts
that respect the natural environment, while at the same time raising the awareness of yachtsmen and
providing them with information. The programme consists of two parts:
Intended for developing new boats and equipment that can be fitted to new and existing boats, the
Bateau bleu© label has, since its creation, made it possible to single out over 40 types of equipment and
more than 100 series of boats. Focused until now on the proper management of sanitary waste water, the
criteria of this seal of approval have evolved in 2008 to incorporate the problem of fuel spillage, so as to go
even further when it comes to protecting the marine environment.
Awarded annually and open to everyone, the Prix du Bateau bleu© seeks to support and encourage the
research and development of products, systems or concepts adapted to yachting for the general public
and moving toward greater protection of the environment. The 2008 prize will honour the best project in
the matter of water management on board.
