The University Research Institute for Social Sustainable Development (INDESS) emerges in response to an existing need of the scientificcommunity that works on sustainability and social welfare in the Social Sciences in 2010. For this reason, 147 researchers decided tojoin forces to become a Reference Cen-ter in the scope of research in this discipline.

The INDESS is constituted with the will to es-tablish a specialized scientific-technical servi-ce offer, through offering solutions to needs ofsociety and of any institution (public / private) that would like to take advantage of our servi-ces, therefore favoring transfer anddissemination of results to the society.

Introduction

INDESS

The INDESS is conceived as a superior structure, which is oriented to research, training and transfer, capable of develo-ping different lines of work and interdis-ciplinary projects as a response to cha-llenges in the society of the 21st century by means of advancing through uniting and sharing efforts, resources and ideas.

For this reason, the INDESS is open to co-llaborate with researchers from other both public and private research centers. The Institute is created with a clear vision for local development, but with a voca-tion to extend its services to the natio-nal and international community as well.

The INDESS is both a physical (with exce-llent facilities, where there is last genera-tion instruments) and virtual space, which serves its researchers as a platform to identify and develop new opportunities for cooperation and financing and to promote realization of collaborative R + D + I pro-jects. Therefore, INDESS aims to establish schools of Master’s Degree and phD pro-grams, as well as training networks, pre- and postdoctoral studies at the borders of knowledge of Social Sciences as a logical result for transfer of investigationsto society.

The main function of INDESS is to investigate in the field of Social Sciences, as well as to offer solutions to realities of society and of any institution, either public or private, by means of trying to favor the transfer of knowledge. There are three main lines of research de-voted to society and territory in the institute, in which legal, criminological and economic analyzes are carried out. Furthermore, there is a second line that is so-called Society and Communication where analyzes are carried out from the point of view of marketing and social pro-cesses. Moreover, a third line of society and well-being that encompasses health and quality of life areas exists. Evidently, research in any line is developed from the point of view of sustainability. In addition, the institute is a physical space with a large number of laboratories.

These laboratories contain instruments of all types: there are laboratories for climate change, tourism, economics, entrepreneurship, communication, com-puter science, psychology and marketing. They contain, among other facilities, a radio and a television set.In conclusion, everything that is necessary to de-velop research in different areas to carry out an analysis of society from a multidisciplinary point of view is included at INDESS. INDESS is not only considered a physical but also a virtual space..
