Tidbits

Honorable Mention. Three frozen chairs without error in a day of quizzing equals 210 points. When quizzers get that many points or more and yet don’t make Quizzer of the Month, they deserve some recognition. In November, the fol-lowing quizzers met that criterion:Varsity David Skelton 220Junior Varsity John Williams 250 Nailah Davis 240 Nickolas Sponseller 210Little League Omari Davis 250 Dayo Davis 220Congrats for some great quizzing.

Tournament Watch. For those who like extra tournament experience, check out the Holiday (“Cookie”) Quizzing Tournament in nearby Wayne on January 5, 2008. It is a WBQA style tournament open to Little League, JV and Varsity teams. The registration deadline is December 22. More information may be found at http://quiz.cc/holiday.htm.

A little later in the new year, on February 16, is the Snowflake Tour-nament in Hershey, PA. Find out more at http://quiz.cc/wbqareg_midatlantic.htm.

Haiku of the Month.

One—body, Spirit,Lord, faith, baptism, God, Father—over, through, in all.

STEERING COMMITTEEThe DBQ Steering Committee will be meeting at 7:00 P.M. on January 21, 2008 at Highland Park Baptist. Participating churches are welcome to send a representative.

While many are on track to qualify soon for the Chicago 2008 tournament, Graham Wojtas, Sarah Scrivner and rookie Clay Stanton have done so already. Congratulations! For the rest of you, now is the time for persistence. Qualify early, so you aren’t sweating it in March.

CM Who’s Your Daddy—140Y Dreams of Peace—20BB Free in Christ—90Something unusual happened to Caleb Leidy in both this quiz and also his last quiz of the day—he froze without error! Now for anyone who does not know Caleb, he has held the double distinction of “All Star” and “Error King” for many years now. But in this quiz, he jumped to a frozen chair by question 4, with BB’s Chris Winter correctly answering #3. With big brother frozen, Michelle Leidy correctly answered questions 5 and 6. Chris answered question 7. Caleb got back in and correctly handled a toss-up on #9. After a pass and an error, the toss-up on #12 went to Heart’s Rachel Kozloski. Chris froze his chair without error on #13 and Michelle made it to 60 points on #14. Joshua Leidy tried to answer #15 to give Who’s Your Daddy the bonus, but came up short. Chris got the toss-up for Free in Christ to end the quiz.

Heart...Self Control?—0 HHBC Do Not!—130 CP Its Nt That Bad—160Huron Hills’ Christian Pedersen scored 110 points and teammate David Galura added 20 to give Do Not! a total of 130. In most quizzes that would be enough for the victory, but not this time. Cornerstone rookie Lisa Mudgons froze without error, Ellie Kitchen put up 40 and Yeha Youm added 20 plus the team bonus—140 points with one question to go. Heart took an error on question 15, which

unfroze Christian and Lisa for the toss-up on 15A. Ellie got the jump, gained her own frozen chair and turned Its Nt That Bad’s lead into victory.

Little League Quiz Scores

Congratulations to rookies Eleanor Row and Alec Cherniausky, who scored their first ever points this month! Kudos (not the snack kind) also to Nicholas Skelton, Dayo Davis, Omari Davis, Gabrielle Baut and Jalen Davis, who all qualified for Chicago. Good job!

OC Earthly Regions—50; CP Shining Stars—80; CP Mighty Power—90OC’s Kayla Kauzlarich was first on the board on question 1 and added 20 more on #3. Omari Davis kept pace on questions 2 and 4 for CP Mighty Power. Sarah Kaake got a freebee for CP Shining Stars on question 7. After Omari froze without error on question 9, the score was 40-10-70. But then Dayo Davis jumped into action, freezing without error for the Stars on questions 10, 12 and 13. After Kayla froze on question 14, the score was 60-80-70. It was anybody’s quiz. Lizzie Rinke tried but came up short for OC on question 15. Omari correctly answered the toss-up for the Mighty Power win.

Little League Quiz Highlights

The competition is saying “Spare us!” HHBC Spare Me! scored an amazing total of 540 points and earned 35 Olympic Points in the November competition. Rookie Caleb Springer joined the dynamic duo of John Williams and Nickolas Sponseller this month, getting his first 60 points ever and contributing to the team bonuses.

Qualifying for Chicago 2008 this month were Sarah Hoffman, Ade Davis, Kristy Cherniausky, Genna Galura, John Williams and Nailah Davis. Way to go!

CP 4Ners & Aliens—90LW Absolutely Not—160CM Glory Rockers—20In this quiz, Living Word had a 140 point advantage after just six questions—Kristy Cherniausky picked off questions 1-2-3 for a frozen chair without error, and teammate Rachel Dober repeated the feat over the next 3 questions. Second place was a complete team effort for 4ners & Aliens—Jake Curtin scored 40, while Mike Prieskorn and TJ Curtin each scored 20, along with the team bonus. Montreise Giles picked up the 20 points for the Glory Rockers (formerly CM Little Women).

Thanks to Cornerstone Presbyterian for hosting yet another great tournament. Thanks to the quizmasters, statisticians and other volunteers who got done every-thing needed for a tournament to run smoothly. Thanks to the coaches and quizzers who provided some awe-some competition. And, of course, thanks to the fans for their support.

Varsity — DBQ came to the 2007 GLRT with hopes of setting a record fifth consecutive Varsity championship. After the morning preliminary rounds, it was looking doable as DBQ CP Promise was in second place, plac-ing it in the favorable triple-elimination bracket for the playoffs. Alas, after three tries in the afternoon, Promise was left on the doorstep of the Finals in fourth place.

Also knocking on the door for a spot in the Finals were DBQ Heart 1 and DBQ One Reaps.

On the individual front, DBQ had some shining starts, with Josh Kauzlarich coming in as top quizzer, Gra-ham Wojtas in second place, and six more DBQers among the 15 All Stars.

Junior Varsity — Numbers were down in the JV division this year as there were no teams from outside the state. However, the quality of quizzing did not suffer. Seven of the nine teams had a legitimate shot at the Finals. Indi-vidually, the top five All Stars were DBQ quizzers!

As in the Varsity division, the host church provided some of the best quizzing in the preliminaries—CP Joy was undefeated in first place; CP Peace was in second place. However, again, the afternoon session brought disappointment as other teams nudged past into the Finals.

More coverage of the JV Finals and the JV Division is on the back side of this page.

Little League — Numbers were healthy in the Little League division this year, except there was only one team from DBQ, as the host church fielded DBQ CP Love. The team of Gabrielle Baut, Dayo, Jalen and Omari Davis, and Sarah Kaake—with three rookies among them—finished the preliminaries in eigth but moved up a spot in the playoffs. Well done, team.

DBQ Tried To Destroy It – 170 Berrien One In Christ – 80 DBQ Absolutely Not! – 70

The JV playoffs were a wide-open event. DBQ Tried to Destroy It started in third place paced by strong quizzing from John Williams and Christian Pedersen. But their ace up the sleeve for the playoffs was the arrival of Jenna Galura. With her help they were first into the Finals.

Next into the Finals was Berrien One in Christ, start-ing in fourth place and winning two playoff quizzes in a row. Lastly, DBQ Absolutely Not!, starting in sixth and having lost their first playoff quiz to Berrien, won the next two to place into the Finals.

The Finals started rather slowly with three errors and an attempt in the first five questions. Berrien was the only team on the board in that stretch as Peter Anderson took question two. But then DBQ Tried To Destroy It put the hammer down—John claimed #6, Jenna 8 and 9, and Christian 10 for a team bonus. Then they put the hammer down a second time—John took #14, Jenna 16 and 17A for a quizout with bonus, and Christian 18.

Top quizzer Kristy Cherniauski of DBQ Absolutely Not! also got on track and quizzed out on question 15.

With Tried To Destroy It having wrapped up their hero-ics and Kristy on the sidelines, the penultimate question started with the score 180-30-80. Berrien’s Julie Oblak got her second question then, to pull Berrien within one question and a bonus of second place.

On question 20, Absolutely Not!’s Rachel Dober opted for the “win in the air, not the chair” strategy, jumped aggressively and took an error. On the toss-up, Tried To Destroy It tried to help their colleague by also jump-ing aggressively, but again with an error. Berrien wisely sat out the free question and then, in overtime, Sam Prahlow got the jump, the answer and the team bo-nus—good for a come-from-behind second place.
