“Pienso que la edad, sobre todo, ayuda a que corra más tran-quilo y no tenga presión. Pero además ayuda que esto sea mi pasión; es alegría, ilusión y sentirme bien. Cuando deje la bicicleta seguiré haciendo lo mismo, pero sin tener que llegar a una competición y estar al 100%”. La filosofía del ciclista número uno del mundo es puro optimismo. Muchos sufrimientos ha tenido que pasar para sentir, ahora, en 2016, que su carrera está completa y su esfuerzo dignamente reco-nocido. Aunque aún le faltaba algo.

“Habíamos planteado algún año acudir, pero no fue hasta temporada cuando dijimos en la concentración de noviem-bre: ‘Este tiene que ser el año’”. Con 36 años, el ciclista que todo lo puede aún no había probado sus capacidades en el Giro de Italia. La deuda se salda en Apeldoorn y en la región de Güeldres (Gelderland). “Es algo diferente, nuevo, que afrontamos con ilusión y ganas. La aproximación al Giro ha sido perfecta. Hemos corrido lo que queríamos, consi-guiendo éxitos. Sí que decidimos no ir a Flandes y acudir a Tenerife -al sur, no al Teide-, para acumular horas de subida y puertos largos, y me ha ido bien. He estado más cómodo, más a gusto, con calor y preparándome bien. A partir de ahí ganamos Castilla y León, ganamos la Flecha Valona… el trabajo está bien hecho y veremos lo que pasa en Holanda”.

“El inicio nos obligará a poner todos los sentidos en la carretera. Pero tengo la confianza de tener un gran equipo detrás y saber que con su apoyo no tendremos ningún tipo de problema. Llegamos todos muy bien, pletóricos, y es un grupo equilibrado, con hombres para el llano como Jasha o Rory; gente para la media montaña como Visco o Rojillas; u hombres de alta montaña como Javi, Jose, Carlos o el propio Andrey. Mi confianza es total”. De los rivales, destaca a “Ni-

bali, sin duda el candidato número uno. Vemos tam-bién a un Landa muy fuerte y al que tener muy en cuenta tras su Giro 2015. Además, otros corredores como Dumoulin, Chaves y seguro que alguno más”.

Ve la CRI de Chianti como “exigente. No tiene nada de rectas planas, arriba y abajo… será duro y no la veo como una CRI donde partamos en desventaja”. Cinco días después comenzará la ‘traca’. “En Cividale seguro que pasa algo. Como te pillen relajado un día, puedes perder el Giro completamente, y aunque al día siguien-te estén todos esos puertos, hay que estar siempre al 100%”. Habla Alejandro del ‘tappone’ de Corvara Val Badia (14ª). “Es durísima por el desnivel -5350 me-tros, en nuestro reconocimiento-, por la dureza de las rampas y por la altura. Una vez que coronas Pordoi ya prácticamente no bajas de 1500 metros en todo el día. Son 210 kilómetros, y a las alturas que estaremos de Giro se puede hacer extremadamente dura”. La segunda se-mana acabará con la cronoescalada del Alpe di Siusi: “Los dos primeros kilómetros son más llevaderos, pero entrados en el puerto en sí se sube muy continuo, con exigencia. Va a haber diferencias”.

Visitó esas etapas y no las de Risoul / Agnello o Bonette / Lombarda. “Pero aunque reconocer puertos importa, conta-rá más en esta última semana la condición de cada uno”. Para Alejandro, un buen resultado el próximo 29 de mayo en Turín sería “estar en el podio y haber conseguido alguna etapa”. Y por apoyo de los aficionados -pueden mandar sus mensajes con el hashtag #BalaRosa-, seguro no quedará. “Vamos a dar el máximo por todos ellos. Estoy encantado de estar en Italia, de correr el Giro por primera vez y deseo que dis-fruten conmigo y con el Movistar Team, que lo va a poner todo para estar en lo más alto”. ¡Vamos, ‘Bala’!

“I think that calmness comes with age; experience has made start the races under less pressures. But above all, what helps me the most is that cycling is my passion; it means happiness, excitement to me, something that makes me feel good. When I retire, I’ll still do the same, riding my bicycle, but happily, without the pressure of having to be 100% fir for a race.” The philosophy of the world’s number one cyclist is pure optimism. Alejandro Val-verde had to go through lots of suffering to find now, in 2016, the respect and support of rivals and fans, full recognition of his career. Then again, something was still missing in his story.

“We had thought many times about coming here, but it wasn’t a serious thought until last November in the team meeting: ‘This has to be the year’, we said.” Aged 36, the cyclist who can reach for everything hadn’t still given a shot at the Giro d’Italia. That debt will be paid in Apeldoorn, in the Dutch province of Gelderland. “It’s something new to me, different, a challenge we tackle with all the focus it requires. The approach to this Giro was perfect. We rode everything we wanted, we claimed some important wins. It’s also true that we ruled out the Tour de Flanders, so I could travel to Tenerife -the beaches in the south, not Teide-, in order to have some long-range climbing under my belt, and it went well for me. I’ve felt the freshest I’ve ever got to the Ardennes, happier, enjoying good temperatures, taking care of myself. We won Castilla y León, then Flèche Wallonne... I did a great job.”

“This Giro start will require full focus already from day one. Fortunately, I’ve got a strong team with me that will keep me away from any troubles. All of us nine are in perfect condition, in good spirits, and our block is a balanced one, with good rouleurs like Jasha or Rory; talented allrounders, such as Visco or Rojillas; and pure climbers of world-class quality: Javi, Jose, Carlos or Andrey himself. I’m 100%

confident about them.” Asked about the rivals, he talks about “Nibali, undeniably the biggest favourite. Also Landa, really strong during the last month and someone to keep an eye on after his 2015 Giro. Plus, Dumoulin, Chaves - and surely many surprises.”

He found the Chianti TT “demanding. It doesn’t have any flat straights, it’s always up and down. It will be a hard one, and I don’t feel like this TT should play down our chan-ces.” Five days later, the big mountains await. “Cividale’s finish will see some fireworks, I’m sure. And if they catch you out of focus, you may well lose the Giro altogether. Even with all those climbs a day later, such a stage requires you to be 100%.” Alejandro re-fers to the ‘tappone’ of Corvara Val Badia (st. 14). “It’s tremendous: 5,350m of vertical drop, plenty of steep slopes, and especially the altitude. Once you reach the summit of the Pordoi, you almost never get under 1,500m. It’s a 210km stage and, with fourteen days of Giro on our legs, it might become decisive”. Week no. 2 ends with the Alpe di Siusi mountain TT: “The first 2k are easier, but once you get into the real climb, it’s a tough one, with steady ramps that will create serious gaps at the end of the day.”

He made a recon of those stages, but not of Risoul / Agnello or Bonette / Lombarda. “My feeling is that, even if recce’s matter, it will be more important on that final week to feel fresh. That will be decisive.” For Alejandro, a good result in Turin on 29 May would be “to finish on the podium and win one or more stages.” He won’t lack support from fans around the world -which they can send in with the hashtag #BalaRosa-. “And we will do everything we can to make them happy. I’m so pleased to race in Italy for three weeks, to know the Giro, and I hope they enjoy my racing and the Movistar Team’s. I hope to see you all from the top of the podium.” ¡Vamos, ‘Bala’!

la mano, de la que se ha recuperado a tiempopara disputar Romandía con anterioridad al Giro
