PRESIDENTS REPORT:
Hello And Welcome to 2014 OEC Members,
2014 is "The Year Of the Horse" and I hope this coming year is one amazing time for you and
your horse/s. We finished 2013 with a wonderful Christmas rally. We finally got a day where
it wasn't raining nor had hurricane winds. The day started off with flat lessons with the
wonderful Michael Bragge as our instructor and ended with a wonderful and fulfilling
jumping session. After flat and jumping we had an OEC Presentation, our yearly AGM and a
lovely lunch, followed by a nutrional talk from Kentucky Equine Research.
At the Presentation our members, who had been nominated by other club members based
on their performances during the year, received wonderful awards donated by various local
businesses. CONGRATULATIONS to Susan Wookey who won the “Clubman Award”, Kim
Schick who won "Most Improved Rider" & Claudia Gilbert won "Encouragement Award" and
we acknowledged Kim McDonald for all her help with the "Cardinia council equine
strategy". Keep up the awesome work!
Our AGM resulted in a few changes within out committee, with new faces accompanying
the older faces within the committee, its bound to be one wonderful year, full of laughter
and more achievements. Whilst the presentation and AGM were going ahead we were
treated to a wonderful and filling lunch with lamb and beef on the menu and prepared,
cooked and served to us by Dwayne Godden and Robyn Early
After a very filling but wonderful lunch, we sat down to a very informative presentation on
equine nutrition. The presentation covered many topics that us horse owners may have or
in future may deal with. Anything from colic and ulcers to top level competitions and how to
feed your horse a well balanced diet. I myself found this really informative and really want
to thank Brigette for organising this great presentation.
2014 is looking to be a huge one for the OEC with many things in the pipeline ahead for our
members and their horses. We even have some changes coming up for our grounds with an
upgrade to our sand arena which will see us having more room and giving us more jumping
prospects.

NEWS/ITEMS OF IMPORTANCE
Throughout the year our members compete at various locations within Victoria. We
encourage everyone and support all our members in their competitions and shows. Our first
rally back is Saturday the 15th February (awe Valentines Rally) Please let the Rally Co-
ordinator (Alison Johnson) know if you are coming to the rally a week before so they are
able to place you into the appropriate level for you and your horse. Please also let her know
if you intend to do a jumping lesson.
If anyone has any questions or queries they wish to ask please don't hesitate to contact one
of the committee members and they will help you or direct you to the right person...
I look forward to riding and meeting and chatting with everyone at OEC in 2014.. Lets make
it another wonderful supportive year for OEC.

UP AND COMING EVENTS AND CLINICS
We have organised to have a Bunnings sausage sizzle to raise funds for the club on Saturday 5/4/14. If everyone could please put this date in their diary’s and try their hardest to attend. Many hands make light work! Thanks!
When a working bee is in progress there is to be NO RIDING at all on the gounds. When grounds duties are in progress a new sign will be erected on the front gate saying “Horse riding to be undertaken at your own risk”. Obviously if you do choose to ride while ground duties are being performed please stay at the very opposite end of the grounds. DO NOT approach any machinery at all. This is for your own safety and should be common practice. If possible can you please make note that you are planning to perform your grounds duties on the facebook page to alert other members.
Membership fees/renewals ARE NOW OVERDUE. If you have any questions about your renewal please contact Susan. Now is a great time to encourage new members to join as they will get the maximum bang for their buck!
Again, Cars and floats are NOT allowed to drive on the grass at any time of the year. They must be kept in the gravelled car park
Please consider supporting our Wednesday rallies. Numbers have been low and as a result, if they do not pick up by February we will need to cancel them. We want to continue to offer the Wednesday rallies as they are great for those that can attend. However we are currently losing money on them.
KEEP THE FRONT GATE CLOSED AT ALL TIMES! If you are the last to leave please make sure you padlock it. Non-members have been using the grounds.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THE TRACTOR
IMPORTANT CHECK LIST BEFORE STARTING THE TRACTOR:
1. Check oil – pull dipstick out and wipe it first and then re-check. The dipstick is located on the left hand side of the engine.
2. Same side (LHS) check the diesel - cap located on top of the bonnet (the fuel tin is kept in the smaller shed in a metal frame). If you can’t see the diesel level then put the stick in and if it's below two inches DO NOT DRIVE make sure you fill it up because if it runs out of fuel it's very difficult to re-start as you need to bleed the engine.
3. Check the air cleaner which sits on top of the engine. 4. Check the radiator is not clogged up with grass. 5. RHS lift up bonnet and check the water (bonnet can be difficult to relatch so persevere) 6. Kick the tyres to ensure there is enough air in them. 7. Make sure roll bar is upright as it protects you if the tractor rolls. 8. Check the oil on the slasher
STARTING THE TRACTOR:
1. Put both gears in neutral. 2. Make sure PTO is in the OFF position (this is the lever to engage the slasher blades) 3. Put the clutch in 4. Everybody around you stands back. 5. Start the engine. 6. Lift slasher up high to get out of the shed 7. NEVER EVER HOP ON SLASHER WHILE TRACTOR IS RUNNING 8. NEVER EVER HOP OFF TRACTOR WHILE ITS RUNNING
GEARS AND THROTTLE:
1. There are two throttles – RHS foot throttle for driving. 2. Hand throttle on the dash – when driving set on 1800 revs for normal driving. If the grass is thick then put on
2000 revs. 3. If you are unfamiliar with the tractor do not use above 3
rd gear (use low gears for slashing)
4. GEARS – left knob is the gears and right knob is low & high range.
When using the tractor remember stones can be propelled 100 metres away so keep cars and people far away.

IMPORTANT REMINDERS
Wishing a very happy “DECEMBER and JANURARY” birthday to the following members;
Tracey Seal – 23rd December
We hope you had a great day!!
Please remember to clean up any poo your horse does. Whether you tie your
horse to the float or use the yards, we need to keep the grounds tidy. Sharyn
Wyatt has kindly donated a pooper scooper so please clean up any mess your
equine friend leaves behind. Thank you.
HORSE YARDS:
We are in the process of numbering all the horse yards. A board will be put
up in the clubhouse with your name and which yard you have been allocated.
Everyone is then responsible for the cleanliness of their own yard at the end
of a rally as is the pony club member using the same yard as you…….Should
you leave poo behind in your allocated yard, you will be fined $5.00 and this
is payable before you ride again. Sara Godden is going to take on the role of
“yard supervisor” for OEC and Michelle Van Leeuwen will do pony club.

Sharon May-Davis is a world renowned Equine Therapist and Scientist. Her experience with
performance horses has spanned over 35yrs and boasts clients whom represent Australia in
four equestrian disciplines.
Sharon has taught subjects at various educational facilities for over 15 years and spoken at
many seminars, expositions and workshops in Australia and overseas.
Over the years, Sharon has earned two descriptive nicknames – “Equine CSI” and “The Bone
Lady”, this was primarily due to her research into equine anatomy and skeletal articulation.
Sharon’s devotion to performance horses and her comprehensive understanding of associated
anatomy and athletic ability has seen her develop specific techniques relevant to various
equine disciplines and rehabilitation. As a direct result, horses have improved their athletic
capabilities and the record books verify their accomplishments. However, none of this could
be achieved without the knowledge of what lay beneath the outer layer of hair and skin. With
this in mind, Sharon is always striving to understand the variations that lie within and thus, is
looking forward to presenting this clinic so that we all may gain from the experience.
