from CalSolar, Roland from Daybreak Technologies, John Zagorski from Mainline Sales, and Jeff from Delco Sales.

Vivian introduced the speaker Mr. Sean Neman from Calsolar. Solar has been increasingly more common due to AHJs are implementing requirements. He explains that for solar water heating (SWH), water is preheated and is stored in a separate storage tank. There are two solar water heating systems. One system is water will run through the collectors and the second system is a closed loop glycol system which uses a heat exchanger to transfer energy.

General rules of thumb are panels are 4 ft x 10 ft and are angled at 32 degrees. A typical family will go through 40 unties of hot water per day. Each collector heats 80 gallons and the tank is sized between 1 to 2 gallons per collector. The system ideally would be located as close as possible to the boilers and if located on the roof, reinforcement is required. He also stated cash rebates are available from utilities, the return on investment is approximately 2 to 3 years and the systems generally needs to be maintained once a year.

He continues by speaking on solar photovoltaics (PV). LEED points awarded for PV and there are jurisdictions requiring this type of system. Target solar fractions and goals are needed to size the system. The typical size of a 325W panel is approximately 40 in. x 80 in. When laying out the panels, shading regions such as stairs and parapets should be kept in mind. LADBS has rebates available for existing and new construction. There is a federal tax credit that expires on Dec. 31, 2020 which is 30% based on the contract price for PV and SWH. PV generally has a return on investment of 4 years.

As you all know, our 3rd Annual ASPE LA and OC combined Product Show and Technical Seminar will be held on Wednesday August 16, 2017 at La Mirada Holiday Inn. Make sure to register to attend the seminar. We have three Technical Seminars. See our technical calendar in the newsletter for more details. Please contact our VP Tech, Vivian, for all seminar registrations and VP membership, John, for product show registration.

We are losing two members this month putting us down to 191 per the society’s June report. We will try harder to meet our target for over 200 and maintain that membership. One thing that makes the target hard to keep is that members get new jobs and change their contact e-mail addresses. If you know that any one of our current members has gotten a new job, please notify our VP Membership Board member, John, so that the contact list can be updated. As I mentioned last month, if you have financial problems in being able to maintain your current membership, let us know. We’ll find a way to help solve the issue.
