From the President

It is hard to believe that as I write this, I am looking back on my sixth year at Shepherd. Randy and I have enjoyed becoming a part of this great community and feel fortunate for having joined the university family.

The past year had its share of challenges. Despite increased competition for students and tight budgets, our campus came together to make great things happen. We opened the underpass which not only improved safety but also created the link that now defines us as one campus. A dedicated team of faculty and staff worked to create the university’s first extended learning site in Martinsburg, therefore creating greater access to working adults who are completing their first degree or pursuing a graduate degree. We achieved full accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission and were commended for our work to address concerns for faculty teaching in overload. Through all of this, your continued support instilled us with confidence that our efforts are recognized and worthwhile. Your gifts are appreciated. Because of our benefactors we were able to increase scholarship funds for students and begin a new program that will support our students as they compete for presti-gious awards such as Fulbright and Rhodes scholarships. With your help, the second phase of Center for Contemporary Arts became a reality, providing classrooms, studios, and performing spaces for this year’s students. The soccer complex received an upgrade when we added an artificial turf competition field and improved the practice field. In short, your gifts impacted every facet of the university by opening access with financial support, supporting academic excel-lence, and providing improved facilities for learning and competition. I especially want to thank the charter members of the Leadership Circle. Through your unrestricted gifts you are providing Shepherd a resource for staying strong through these challenging times. You enable us to take advantage of emerging opportunities. You lead by your example and you inspire us to keep moving.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Shipley, Ph.D.PresidentShepherd University

Clockwise, from top left: The naming of the new Stanley C. and Shirley A. Marinoff Theater in the Center for Contemporary Arts II recognized a legacy gift to the Shepherd University Foundation by Dr. Stanley C. Marinoff, of Shepherdstown and Chevy Chase, Maryland, in his name and in memory of his late wife Shirley. The endowment supports the educational initiatives and artistic programming of the Contemporary American Theater Festival (CATF), hosted at Shepherd University since 1991. “Endowment gifts to the Shepherd Foundation serve as the backbone to the long-term growth and future of the university,” said President Suzanne Shipley during a private naming ceremony for the 180-seat theater and multipurpose venue held in February and attended by Dr. Mari-noff (l.) and his daughter Allison Marinoff Carle and son-in-law Eric Carle. In his remarks, Marinoff praised Shepherd and the CATF as pillars for the continued vibrancy of Shepherdstown, saying, “With this gift, I know that future CATF seasons and university students will be supported—in perpetuity—by our family.”

As co-owners of Ridgefield Farms, a 35-acre working farm in Jefferson County, Dr. Scott Beard (r.) and Alan Gibson provide the surrounding county with fresh produce in addition to hosting weddings, holiday and bir thday parties, hay rides and pumpkin-picking, and a spectacular tribute to Halloween. But at the 12th annual Scarborough Society Gala, Scott—a nationally recognized pianist and Shepherd’s graduate studies dean and associate vice president for academic affairs—and Alan—who previously owned a Washington, D.C., PR and advertising firm—looked debonair in tuxedos as they paid homage to the Roaring ’20s at the Great Gatsby-themed event. Scott and Alan often attend university and community events and are active supporters of the Friends of Music and Shepherd’s music department.

Sections of a 54-panel collaborative mural created by Shepherd art students will be purchased by the 2013 senior class and proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Sara Beth Chroussis Fund. The fund was originally established in 2007 after students held an ar t show and donated all proceeds from it to the Shepherd University Foundation in memory of Sara Chroussis, a senior ar t major who passed away unexpectedly on New Year’s Eve. More than $7,500 was raised through the ar t sale, along with individual contributions. Originally exhibited in the Shepherd Bookstore as part of the Visual Literacy Student Art Show, the mural was the work of more than 75 Shepherd art students.

Katelyn Stoneberger ’13 of Harpers Ferry was the first in her family to attend college and paid for it with student loans and her own personal income. She was also the recipient of the C. Brown and Hazel Hendricks Scholarship, established by Hazel McDonald Hendricks in homage to her and her husband’s high regard for Shepherd University and higher education in general. After teaching home economics at the high school level followed by an 11-year tenure at Shepherd, Hazel Hendricks hoped to encourage other students pursuing degrees in a field for which she was passionate. The endowed scholarship is designated for family and consumer sciences students or those in related fields such as psychology, ar ts, or music. An art and photography major, Katelyn reflects on the significance of her award, saying, “I did not have parental funding, so this scholarship really helped me out with tuition and textbook costs.” Katelyn Stoneberger

As a native of Shepherdstown, Shepherd adjunct faculty member Dr. Michael M. Athey ’62 is deeply committed to Shepherd University and the surrounding community. Now retired from his roles as professor of teacher education courses at West Virginia University and fire safety instructor with the WVU Extension Service, the former educator and supervisor with Berkeley County Public Schools continues to serve as a longtime member of the Shepherdstown Fire Department. A recently inducted Emeritus Club member, Mike also performs adjunct professorship duties in his Special Methods in Teaching Science course and often attends athletic events at Shepherd. When he began to consider his own legacy in 1995 after the death of his father, Mike had no hesitations about giving back to his alma mater and wished for his gift to reflect his varied interests. In 2013, he established the Michael M. Athey, Ed.D. Endowed Scholarship with a deferred gift designated for students pursuing studies in the area of science education, in addition to student athletes, with a preference for those participating in men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball. As a new member of the Joseph P. McMurran Society, Mike enjoyed mingling with other members and guests at this year’s Joseph P. McMurran Society Dinner in April. Pictured (l. to r.) are Anne Harris ’61, Charles French ’63, Athey, and Pat Egle ’60. Anne Harris ’61, Charles French ’63, Dr. Michael Athey ’62, and Pat Egle ’60

The Joseph P. McMurran Society was established at Shepherd University to honor those who have cho-sen to provide for the future of Shepherd University with a bequest or other planned gift. As Shepherd’s first president, Joseph McMurran began a tradition of philanthropy, setting academic standards that required him to make personal financial sacrifices in order to keep the college open. This tradition is carried on today by the Society’s members, many of whom gathered together at the annual Joseph P. McMurran Society Dinner reception held in the atrium of Erma Ora Byrd Hall. Here Soci-ety members (l. to r.) Stephen Skinner, Luella Jo and Paul (Soupy) ’58 Hillyard, and Foundation president Mike ’89 and Wendy Smith mingle with Sharon ’70 and Jim ’59 Brown, who attended this year’s event as guests. Jim and Sharon recently endowed the James and Sharon Devol Brown Scholarship in support of student athletes majoring in education, with a prefer-ence for men’s basketball players. T. Guy Reynolds ’33 is 100 years old and still flying high. The oldest known pilot in West Virginia celebrated this milestone bir thday on December 1, 2012 up in the air while friends and family, including President Suzanne Shipley and her husband Randy Wadsworth, waited for him to join them on the ground to commemorate the occasion. A native of Berkeley County, Reynolds graduated from Shepherd College with a degree in education and was named Outstanding Alumnus in 2006. In 2000, Guy endowed the John Thomas Reynolds Scholarship in honor of his son, a 1964 graduate of Shepherd, who only one year earlier had established the Thomas Guy Reynolds Scholarship in honor of his father. Both scholarships support stu-dents majoring in education. Following his graduation from Shepherd, Guy taught in Berkeley County until 1952. He then began working for Corning, where he enjoyed an exemplary career until his retirement. But flying is his true passion. “I love to see God’s creation,” said Guy, who celebrated his 93rd bir thday with his first parachute jump. “And you can see it from up there.”T. Leadership CircleShepherd University is pleased to announce the launch of the Leadership Circle. The group was formed to honor and rec-

ognize the work of Dr. Suzanne Shipley during her first six years as president.

Membership in the Leadership Circle is extended to individuals who have shown uncommon commitment to Shepherd’s aca-demic excellence through their annual support. Their willingness to invest in Shepherd through annual gifts of $1,000 to $5,000 (or more) has set the leadership standard for all alumni and friends of the university. Their gifts to the university are a true demonstration of Shepherd passion and pride.

Charter Member List

Charter membership in the Leadership Circle is open through June 2014. If you are interested in becoming a charter member or making an annual gift—of any size—to support The Shepherd Fund, please contact Julia Krall, director of annual giving, via e-mail at [email protected] or by phone at 304-876-5526.

A defensive lineman on the 1982 and 1983 football teams, Eugene Lugat ’83 enthusiastically supports Shepherd Uni-versity’s Ram Nation. He is a charter member of the Ram Gridiron Club, which honored him in 2005 for his long-standing commitment to the SU football program. In 2012, under the firm belief that the appeal of Division II football lies with the student-athlete, Eugene and his wife Christine established the Eugene and Christine Lugat Defensive Player Football Scholarship. Through the creation of this annually funded award, he hopes his fellow teammates and other former players will consider pledging their own private gifts in support of Shepherd’s defensive positions. Eugene is a former member of the Shepherd University Foundation’s Board of Directors and is among the members of the distinguished Joseph P. McMurran Society who intend to provide for the future of Shepherd University with a planned gift. Eugene Lugat ’83

Sharon Drummeter was a well-loved and respected assistant nursing professor at Shepherd University, having joined the nursing department as a visiting professor in the fall of 2008 with a clinical specialty in critical care and gerontological nursing. Sharon was an expert clinician and maintained her clinical practice competencies working with both the Berkeley County Health Department and ICU at City Hospital during her tenure at Shepherd. Service and volunteerism were hallmarks of Sharon’s contributions to Shepherd and she was extremely devoted to her students. When she was diagnosed with acute myeloid lymphoma in July 2011, Sharon mentored the medical students on her treatment team at Georgetown University Hospital and viewed her chemotherapy treatments as an opportunity to help them refine their diagnostic and bedside skills. “She was always focused on her students,” said Louis Drummeter, Sharon’s husband of 29 years. “She really tried to mentor her students and give them the benefit of her experience, which I think is key in education.” Despite a period of remission from December 2011 through July of 2012, Sharon succumbed to her cancer on August 27, 2012 with her husband and daughter, Leah, by her side. As a token of his gratitude to Shepherd for being so supportive during Sharon’s illness, Lou established the Professor Sharon R. Drummeter Endowed Scholarship for Nursing in June 2013. “Sharon was the recipient of a nursing scholarship when she star ted nursing school for her associate’s degree,” Lou said, noting that giving back was something Sharon always did during her life.Sharon Drummeter

David ’09 and Pamela ’99 Crites are active alumni and frequent guests at the annual Joseph P. McMurran Society Dinner, where they are pictured chatting with Dr. Heidi Hanrahan (r.), an associate professor of English and modern languages who serves on the Shepherd University Founda-tion’s Board of Directors and its executive committee. The Criteses are fund contacts for the Amanda Smailes Memorial Scholarship, which honors the memory of Pamela’s sister and former Shepherd student, Amanda Smailes, who was killed by a drunk driver fleeing West Virginia State Police. As a result of this tragedy, the West Virginia legislature passed the Smailes Bill (H.B. 2221) which deems causing police chases and injury to innocent bystanders a felony. The scholarship is designated for a nursing major from Berkeley County. Hanrahan also is a dedicated member of the Shepherd community. In 2011, she was awarded the Annette Murphy Faculty Excellence Fund in English. A prominent businesswoman and community leader, Annette Murphy created this faculty excellence award out of awareness for the importance of recruiting quality English faculty to inspire students. The award helped fund research for a course and travel practicum Hanrahan plans to teach in the spring of 2014 titled American Literature in the Prominence of Place. With plans to focus the course around writers of the American Renaissance, she funded a trip to Massachusetts to visit several important literary landmarks she planned to introduce in the course, including the homes and haunts of major 19th-century writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Emily Dickinson, Louisa May Alcott, and Herman Melville. Doing so added a new dimension to the way she approaches her students and classes. “My teaching has become less ab-stract and more specific and real, both for me and for my students,” says Hanrahan of her award. “Supporting faculty as researchers absolutely makes them better teachers.”David Crites ’09, Pamela Crites ’99, and Dr. Heidi Hanrahan

Ann Wilson Hummer ’69 knows firsthand how great the needs are in school li-brary systems, particularly in the areas of media and technology. Hummer enjoyed a 38-year career in the field of education and library management, working her way from a school librarian at the elementary and secondary levels to a library media director with Frederick County Public Schools in Maryland. In 2002, she left library management to take on the role of director of professional develop-ment for Frederick County Schools at the personal behest of the superintendent. The move was all at once a gift and a challenge. “It was hard to leave the library world,” said Ann, who not surprisingly lists reading among her favorite pastimes, along with golf, yoga, and traveling. Now retired, Ann reflects on Shepherd with fondness and gratitude for the educational livelihood it offered her, saying, “I got an excellent beginning at Shepherd, which gave me the impetus to move forward in what was ultimately a successful career.” It was such sentiment that led her to establish the Ann Wilson Hummer Endowment for the Scarborough Library in support of Shepherd’s library program. Not only does the deferred gift pay homage to her professional roots, it also reflects her personal belief that the library touches all aspects of a college campus. The bequest also allows the 1967 McMurran Scholar to become a member of the prestigious Joseph P. McMurran Society, joining other alumni and friends who have expressed their desire to provide for the future of Shepherd University with a planned gift. Ann Wilson Hummer ’69

John Boyle of Sterling, Virginia, created the Boyle Family Scholarship in tribute to the positive experience his daughter, Colleen Boyle ’12, had as a student at Shepherd University. The annually funded award is designated for students who are actively involved with Shepherd’s marching band. “As a father, I saw my daughter grow and thrive at Shepherd,” said John, who acknowl-edged that Colleen’s active involvement with the band and music department helped ease her transition into college. As John and his wife began to attend Shepherd football games in support of Colleen’s band activities, they grew to love the university’s community-based cul-ture, with Boyle volunteering to administer the Shepherd Ram Band and Shepherd Ram Foot-ball Fans Facebook pages. “My daughter has benefitted in so many ways from her experiences at Shepherd,” he said. “I just wanted to give something back, particularly to the marching band.” With his fund, John chose to invest in the educations of individual band members as a show of appreciation for the spirit they evoke from the crowd and the players at Shepherd’s various sporting events. One such member is Wayne Hawkins, a music education major and the first recipient of the Boyle Family Scholarship. Hawkins plays the saxophone in the Shep-herd Ram band, in addition to mentoring underclassmen band mates. Following graduation, he would like to become a music teacher, saying, “Music has a really strong force in this world.” John Boyle and Wayne Hawkins

42. Shepherd University

Shepherd University is in a perpetual state of growth and development. From the Route 480 underpass now safely connecting east and west cam-puses to the new Martinsburg Center, Shepherd continues to expand

and establish itself as a premier liberal arts university on campus and beyond. But the changing landscape is as cultural as it is physical, manifested through grants and private funding that help support Shepherd’s students, faculty, and programs. Over the past year, several alumni and friends contributed to this cultural evolution through their private gifts.

Dr. Stanley A. Marinoff’s legacy gift supporting the educational initiatives and artistic programming of the Contemporary American Theater Festival (CATF) was recognized by the naming of Shepherd’s newest academic and creative arts venue, located in the second phase of the Center for Contem-porary Arts, the Stanley C. and Shirley A. Marinoff Theater. In his remarks during a private naming ceremony in February, Dr. Marinoff praised the CATF and Shepherd University for opening minds and inspiring critical thinking through education and the arts.

Motivated by a deep gratitude to Shepherd for the educational livelihood it gave her, and under the strong belief that university libraries lie at the heart of campus culture, Ann Wilson Hummer ’69 created the Ann Wilson Hummer Endowment for the Scarborough Library. The deferred gift will support the programs and activities of Shepherd’s library system for generations to come.

While Shepherd is a state-assisted university, state support for institutions of higher learning has been in steady decline in recent years. During the 2012-13 academic year, only 18.7 percent of Shepherd’s budget was funded by the state of West Virginia. Private gifts through the Shepherd University Foun-dation are crucial in funding student scholarships, academic programs, and faculty excellence awards used for academic research and technology that in-spire and sustain innovative curriculum.

Shepherd University prides itself on serving as a center for academic, cultur-al, and economic opportunity in the state of West Virginia. Likewise, Shep-herd students have strengthened society as leaders in education, healthcare, business and community affairs, and the arts. And thanks to the generosity of their private gifts, our outstanding alumni and friends have helped build on this strong academic foundation.

Now is the time to support Shepherd’s culture of success.

Help Shepherd University continue to create a culture of success
