When I finish writing this note, I will head off to Menlo Park-

Atherton to take a look at a Perform-ing Arts Center that was constructed with interior finishes similar to what is being recommended for our Chapel

of the Jesuit Martyrs of North America. Yes, our journey continues and many very dedicat-ed and generous people have been working closely with school ad-ministrators and board

members to bring us ever closer to a chapel groundbreaking celebration in the not-to-distant future.

I am certain that the construction of our new chapel will evoke memories of the construction of the original buildings of the Jesuit campus in 1963. Our founding generation of parents and benefactors were men and women of vision who were not easily daunted by the task they set out for themselves – the construction of a multi-building college prep campus financed, in part, by the sale of Christmas ornaments and countless gifts in kind. We can all take encouragement from the vision and spirit of 1963.

I hope that our celebration of our 50th anniversary of service will also inspire. There is much that we can do and, honestly, much that we need to do. It will take considerable resources to care for our students, but our

dreams today are no different from the hopes back then. Our community continues to need smart and deeply moral leaders whose core motivation is service rather than self-interest. And to make that happen, Jesuit High School will continue to support a passionate faculty and a campus that helps to make aspirations realities.

The Church calls us to remember in a special way this month our beloved dead. We pray often and especially for our graduates who have gone before us and for their families who miss them. And we pray for you, too. Please accept my thanks for all you have done for our Jesuit High School community. You help to make each new day possible at 1200 Jacob Lane.

Men for Others

November 2012

As Jesuit High School prepares for our 50th year of educating young men in the Ignatian tradition, we

are dedicated to assuring the continued success of our school community. Jesuit’s Board of Trustees has

directed school leadership to identify our needs, which will effectively support a 21st century learning environment for our students.

Priorities include:

• Renovating 7,000 square feet of the old locker room into state-of-the-art science labs and a dedicated space for our Robotics and Science Olympiad teams.

• Establishing the King Library as an information commons supporting collaborative spaces for small group learning and use of electronic databases.

• Installation of wireless routers and other infrastructure throughout campus to support the 1:1 iPad initiative.

• Renovation of Loyola Stadium as an ADA compliant facil-ity, which will include: replacement of dilapidated bleachers and press box; installation of a synthetic fiber turf field suit-able for football, rugby, soccer and lacrosse; and replacement of the 1960s-era cinder track with an all-weather surface. Upgrades are also planned for the Varsity Baseball Field.

• Jesuit will continue to seek out opportunities for energy efficiency savings and, as resources are made available, upgrade classroom, offices and landscaping.

In the last five years, 24 members of the Classes of 2007-2012 were named National Merit Semi-Finalists and 62 Seniors were named Commended Students. The National Hispanic Scholar Recognition Program recognized 29 Jesuit students, and seven students were named African-American National Achievement Scholars. Student Awards

Senior Matthew Banicki was awarded the 2012 Mayor’s Volunteer Award for the Young Volunteer of the Year in Elk Grove on October 24. Banicki was also elected to serve as Chair of the ten-member Elk Grove Youth Commission, which was created to identify the current needs of teens living in Elk Grove. Each member of the Elk Grove City Council names two teenagers to the commission.

In preparation for our 50th anniversary, the Office of Communications is looking for archival items from the past 50 years of Jesuit High School. Particularly, we are looking for photos, videos and stories of the original planning for the school, groundbreaking, construction and the early years.

Reimagining Open House

On October 21, we opened our doors to prospective students and their families. More than 350 current students, parents, alumni,

faculty and staff came together to host the event. Prospective students had the opportunity to drive Triton, the Robotics Teams’ underwater robot, to attempt a goal against Senior Luc Barbe from our Soccer Team, to participate in Chemistry demonstrations and to ask our faculty, coaches and club moderators any questions they may have had about Jesuit. Our turnout was amazing and we have seen a 30 percent increase in the number of eighth graders who have expressed interest in applying to Jesuit over the same time last year. Shadow Days kicked off on October 29 and will continue through December 13 and registration is now open for our High School Placement Test on January 19, 2013. I encourage you to share your stories about Jesuit High School with family and friends who may have boys currently in the eighth grade and encourage them to pursue an education dedicated to forming “Men for Others.”

Mayor Johnson Helps Celebrate Jesuit’s Solar Panels

We officially dedicated our new Photovoltaic Solar System on October 16 with an all-

school rally held in the Senior Quad, which was keynoted by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson. The 538 kilowatt system has been generating more than 48 percent of our school’s total electrical power needs since it was completed in mid-May. The system has generated the energy equivalent of more than 28,000 gallons of gas and has offset the carbon dioxide equivalent of more than 6,200 trees. We were awarded the Sacramento Small Sustainable Business of the Year award by the Sacramento County Business Environmental Resource Center for this project and our continued efforts to be good stewards of the environment.

AP Pass RatesThis past year, 217 Jesuit High School students took 436 Advanced Placement Exams with a combined pass rate of 87.6 percent. The California state pass rate is 64.5 percent and the national pass rate is 61.5 percent. We had a 100 percent pass rate on six of the exams: AB Calculus, BC Calculus, English Language and Composition (fourth year in a row with 100 percent of students passing), Music, Physics C (Electricity and Magnetism) and Physics C (Mechanics). Architectural and engineering designs for the Chapel of the Jesuit Martyrs of North America are being finalized and will be submitted for review in

the Spring semester. We expect that Sacramento County will release a Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for a mandatory 45-day public review period within the next few week. As part of the process, we will once again present our project to the Arden-Arcade and Carmichael / Old Foothill Farms Community Planning Advisory Councils as well as the Sacramento County Planning Commission.

Pre-qualification for subcontractors for this project is now available online. Subcontractors must be pre-qualified by Swinerton Builders and Jesuit High School in order to be invited to bid on the project, including firms affiliated with, or those who have performed work in the past. Interested parties are required to submit a Pre-Qualification Statement online no later than November 16, 2012.

Soccer Coach Paul RoseInducted into Hall of Fame

Please join me in congratulating Paul Rose who was inducted into the California Interscholastic Federation Sac-Joaquin Section Hall of Fame

on October 14. Rose became the state’s all-time winningest boys soccer coach during the 2011 season having led his teams to a 656-95-99 record between 1979-2011. He was the 2001 CalHiSports state boys soccer coach of the year and has been named national coach of the year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America three times. He was inducted into the California Coaches Hall of Fame in 2011 by the California Coaches Association and his teams have won nine Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championships. This year’s team has again qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs by winning the Delta River League title and was ranked third in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America as of November 6, 2012.
