This weekend saw an exclusive preview of the Therry Building, stage 1 of thelarger Ignis Project encompassing the redevelopment of the College campus.

On Friday 27th April, Riverview Old Boy and current Vice Chancellor andPresident of UTS, Professor Attila Brungs (OR1989), was the guest speakerat the preview dinner for the College Board, Executive and donors to theproject. He spoke passionately about the importance of teachingenvironments that promote collaborative learning and help students gain thevaluable skills needed to succeed beyond school. "Education," he stated,"not only has the power to transform individual lives, but has the potential tocreate a better, more just and equitable society."

This is indeed the greater imperative of the Ignis Project, as we aim tochange not only the physical aspects of teaching and learning at the College, but also the way in which learning is experienced, and then outworked asstudents go beyond the school gates to impact the world around them.Designed to encourage collaboration, flexibility and adaptability, the newTherry building offers an innovative and agile approach to learning, aidedby seamless technology and dedicated spaces for counselling, support andpastoral care.

The Therry building is expected to be operational in week 3 of Term 2 as thehome of the Humanities - English, Religious Education, History andLanguages - as well as six House areas.

Our next project in the teaching and learning phase of the Ignis Project is the

OIU Breakfast ForumCoffee, catch ups and College conversations

On Monday 26th March, the first OIU Breakfast Forum took place at theHilton Hotel in the heart of the city. Five decades of Old Boys came togetherin their numbers to hear presentations from the Rector and the Principal: theformer who spoke about the future being faced by the Society of Jesus withdeclining numbers of Jesuits, and the latter about the current and futuretrends in a changing educational landscape. It was a valuable opportunity forOld Ignatians to come together with the College leaders to reflect and project, and to engage in discourse about matters of importance.

Each year, we host four breakfast forums and they are a wonderful way ofremaining connected to the College and its future. Thank you to all those whojoined us so early in the morning and engaged meaningfully in this interestingand enlightening discourse. For those who missed out, we have included alink to the video below, and we hope you will consider joining us at the nextForum: vimeo.com/261747723

Some of the winners on the day: Jonas Cuschieri (OR1996), John Conlon(OR1959) and Michael Collins (OR2014) - awarded by OIU President,Charlie Pidcock (OR1987)

The 31st Annual OIU Golf Day returned to Avondale GC in March 2018 undersunny skies, newly laid greens and a near record turnout of 70 old boys ofvarying golfing abilities, but all with enormous enthusiasm. Jonas Cuschieri (OR1996) secured the Individual Charles Fraser Trophy, theAJ Clark Shield for the best 4BBB score was won by John Conlon (OR1959)and Steve Smith (OR1962), whilst the winner of the Charles Cuschieri Cupfor players aged under 30 was taken out by Michael Collins (OR2014).Special thanks must go to Tony Clark and Charles Cuschieri for theirtremendous organisation of the event, as well as Michael Siddle’s generoussupport of the day which was enjoyed by all and played in fine Ignatian spirit.

Riverview Old Boy Callum Elder (OR2012) played for Wigan Athletic (on loanfrom Leicester City) in Round 5 of the FA Cup against one of the powerhousePremier League sides, Manchester City. It was Callum's pass that helpedassist the winning goal by Will Grigg, giving Wigan a 1-0 win against theteam 43 places above them in English football. This win saw them progressto the quarter finals - a thrilling result that saw Callum hailed as an "FA Cuphero" by the Leicester Mercury. Highlights of the match can be seen here.

While their dream run was cut short in the quarter finals against relegation-favourites Southampton, Callum stamped his mark as a standout player. Ofcourse this comes as no surprise to the Riverview community - as a student,he was a keen sportsman representing the College in 1st Football, 2nd XICricket and the Jesuits Cricket Team. At the beginning of Year 12, Callumwas offered a football scholarship at the Academy of Leicester City, whichwas approved by the school. Congratulations to Callum from all hissupporters at Riverview!

Our hosts, the wonderful Mason family: Matt (OR1991), Nick (OR1962),Charlie (Year 8), Mark (OR1983), Joe (OR1991), Sally and Sophie

As part of the 2018 Riverview Boarding Roadshow where the Collegevisits the highways and byways of country NSW, we recently spentsome time in beautiful Bathurst. Director of Boarding Adrian Byrne, who was part of the visiting leadership team, wrote:

On Saturday 7th April, we started our country visits and drove over themountains to Bathurst. Deputy Principal Students Pat Lowe and I presentedthe first of our Excellence in Education Seminars titled: The male identity andpositive health and wellbeing. The premise behind these seminars is toensure that our boarding parents and the wider regional areas of NSW haveaccess to the experience of Riverview staff who are able to provide insightinto a number of topics on which we have expertise. It was an interactiveworkshop so the parents and Old Boys who attended were able to ask anumber of questions, and this also helped us to continue to seek ways tobetter support the young men in our care.

In the evening, we were hosted by Mark and Sally Mason (parents of Charlie,Year 8) at their property ‘Mountain View’. It was a chance for the widerRiverview community of Bathurst to come together and catch up with theRector Fr Jack McLain and the Principal Dr Paul Hine. This is always ahighlight of our tours, a chance for us to go back to where our boys are fromand see where they live. During the evening, many stories were told and itgave us a chance to meet our community, which included Old Boys who arenow grandparents of boys at the College, current and past parents, throughto parents who will soon start the journey next year as their son start atRiverview as the eldest of four boys.

On behalf of the Riverview community, I would like to thank Mark and Sallyfor their kind hospitality, and thank you to everyone who made an effort tocome and join us in Bathurst.

ANZAC Day at RiverviewRemembering the Fallen

At Riverview, we will mark Anzac Day this week on Wednesday 2nd May, inthe first week back in Term 2. One of the most solemn moments of ourcommemoration occurs when 120 of our current boys stand as the namesand photos of the 120 Old Ignatians who died in the wars of the 20th centuryappear on the screens in the Ramsay Hall. We honour and remember them.

During the ceremony this year, two of our students will remember those whocame before them:

GORDON OXENHAM

Gordon Oxenham was one of fivebrothers who were at Riverview in theearly 20th century and he was my greatgreat uncle. He was an enthusiastic rowerand winner of a silver medal at the 1909regatta. When war broke out, Gordon wasa grazier and he joined the AustralianFlying Corps with the rank of FlightLieutenant.

In February 1918, he wrote to his brother,Humphrey: “You will be pleased to knowthat in my first aerial combat, I brought

down an enemy two-seater. Clive Conrick, who was at Riverview with me, isup here also and we are going to call the plane ‘The Riverview.’”

On 27 June 1918, almost 100 years ago, Gordon chased a German plane asfar as the Dead Sea across the desert. During the flight, Gordon was shotthrough the head and killed as his plane crash landed in Palestine. Gordon’sbody was recovered but he has no known grave. When all his back pay waseventually sent home to his family, his parents donated it to Riverview to beused for a prize (the Gordon Oxenham Prize) which has been awarded eversince for excellence and for distinguished character. This has been the majoraward for boarders for over 60 years.

The Oxenham family’s name has continued for over 120 years at Riverviewand I am proud to be among the fourth generation of Oxenhams to attendRiverview.

Douglas Oxenham (Year 12), great great nephew of Gordon Oxenham

GEORGE DOMINIC HILL

George Hill was one of a number of boysfrom New Zealand who went to Riverview inthe early 20th century. He was the son of afarmer from Christchurch and he was atRiverview for just one year, 1914. He wasborn in 1899 on a date that would laterbecome famous as a day of remembrancefor all Australians and New Zealanders, 25

April, later commemorated as Anzac Day.

At Riverview, George was a keen athlete and in September 1914, he camethird in the Under 16 half-mile event at the GPS Athletics. George tried toenlist, aged 17, but he was rejected because he was too young. In thefollowing year, 1917, he was successful and he was sent to the WesternFront.

Two weeks ago, on 19 April, we marked the hundredth anniversary ofGeorge Hill’s death. He was hit by a sniper while helping another soldier lyingin open ground. The bullet lodged in his spine and he died a few hours laterjust short of his nineteenth birthday, the youngest of any of the Old Ignatianskilled in World War I. He is buried in a cemetery in Belgium and today weremember him: George Hill, a brave New Zealander and a brave OldIgnatian.

Henry Ryan (Year 11) who, like George Dominic Hill, hails from NewZealand

Finally, the ceremony will end with this prayer, read by Father Joe Dooley SJ.

God of Love,

You called your wounded servant Ignatius to your son, Jesus, to a lifeof service away from the search for honours and power.

May we too be open to Jesus so that we may discern the ways ofpeace for our school and for our world with hearts and minds thatyearn for what is good and just and true.

We make our prayer through Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, ourbrother and Our Lord.

T20 Wraps Up for Another YearSupporting Indigenous Education

The eighth annual Riverview 1st XI versus the Celebrity XI played on 12thMarch was a great success as a highly entertaining match and a fitting climaxto a wonderful Riverview Community fundraising effort for Redfern JarjumCollege (RJC). The 2018 fixture was held in special memory of PatrickRodgers (OR2011) who, in his HSC year, instigated this important annualRiverview event to support indigenous primary school kids of Redfern. Untilthe end, Patrick was a man for others.

The College was again blessed to haveAdam Goodes play for the invitational team.Adam gives generously of his time on thefield, but also off the field signing autographsand talking with all the young fans at thematch. Adam was joined in the team byformer NSW and Sydney University gradelegend Greg Mail and a group of youngtalented Sydney grade players ofconsiderable talent. The 2017/2018undefeated Riverview 1st XI and GPSChampionship winners knew that they wouldhave a challenging game on their handsagainst a quality outfit. That over 380 runswere scored in 40 overs and the Riverview XIwon with only two balls to spare gives an

insight to the excitement of the match played in great competitive spirit. Thelegendary Mike Coward AM spoke at the presentation of the sportsmanshipof both teams during the match, and reminded us all that even at the game’shighest international levels, this quality is today sadly lacking.

Even the weather cooperated in the joint efforts of the Riverview communitywith RJC, working together for a great outcome. We were very pleased to beable to contribute over $25,000 for RJC to continue their very worthy work. And with Riverview winning this year’s game, the results now stand at four alland we eagerly await the 2019 encounter.
