PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: June 2019 With Memorial Day behind us, the summer season will be underway in earnest very soon. The last major SSCA beachside project is moving along and we’re excited! A ramp is being constructed at the Hillcrest crossover to provide more beach opportunities for physically challenged individuals visiting/living in our community. Upon request, the Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department (SSVFD) provides use of a beach-going wheelchair. The new ramp and the services of our volunteer firefighters together will ensure our beautiful beach is accessible to all in our community. The Board carefully considered the size of the project and expense before proceeding. Input gathered from SSCA members, real estate rental companies and the SSVFD confirmed there was an unmet need that the ramp could fulfill. The addition of the ramp and associated upgrades are funded in total by the SSCA with a major portion of the work done by volunteers; no township or county financial support was used for the project. Soundside, we anticipate planned work on the North Marina will get underway in the near future. Additionally, the Kingfisher sound access area will undergo storm damage repairs of the stairs and bulkhead. Soundview Park improvements have been completed and are being enjoyed by members and guests. While in Asbury Park, NJ recently for a wedding, I took this picture of how beach access is funded there. What a contrast to the collaborative spirit of the SSCA members and volunteers in our community! In an earlier newsletter I wrote about our new signage and how the SSCA felt that a welcoming message is the right approach for our town beaches. We're proud to continue our mission to enrich the lives of our members, residents, guests and our community by developing, operating and maintaining beach access, community-focused parks, recreational opportunities and events. Enjoy the summer! --- Rod McCaughey, SSCA President

PROPERTIES

This is a review of the big projects accomplished in the past two months:

We kicked off demolition of the Mockingbird dune crossover on a chilly (50 degree) morning with a half dozen volunteers. They stripped the deck, cut it in half, and then the track hoe moved in!

Mockingbird Crossover: New ocean side. Visitors just coming off beach:

Page 3: PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: June 2019

On the PM of the Mockingbird demo it only took three of us to prep for the track hoe at the partially buried 11th Ave dune crossover:

Then volunteers framed the viewing deck, while a contractor constructed stairs:

Here’s the finished benches and deck at 11th Avenue (by volunteers)

At 7th Ave the ocean side stairs had to be rebuilt (see new wood in horizontal landing at upper left of photo and then down to the beach) because on New Year’s day the ocean removed 6’ of beach below the foreground stairs, so there was a dramatic escarpment in that area which I had to deal with in terms of beach access. Fortunately about 3’ of sand has come back in, actually bringing the beach level to about

where it was 10 - 15 years ago. This crossover modification was by contract.

Hillcrest was the volunteers’ final demo for 2019 on another cool day w/ winds out of the NE at 25. In this photo six foot wide stairs have been cut in half for track hoe removal. In this case we pried off the 12’ long deck boards and saved the deck structure, then leveled it north to south and back to front.

Page 4: PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: June 2019

Here’s the new deck and stairs at Hillcrest, completed by volunteers. In this photo, Phase I (which included expanding the deck from 5’ wide to 8’ wide) is almost finished except for the benches, which will be replaced last. Phase II involves the volunteers constructing a ramp from the opening between the stairs and the lone 4 x 4 at the right side of the deck, running 20’ down to a 5’ x 9’ landing on the right beyond the photo, then another 20’ ramp parallel to the first one, down to beach. We plan to start ramp construction on May 31st.

That’s it for all the big stuff (which I design) and I organize all the volunteers. BTW, it has taken me at least 300 hours and 2000 miles of driving to support these large crossover projects as well as numerous small ones this spring. But the bottom line is that much of our success in accomplishing crossover work is due to the involvement of my 15 or so volunteers! REMINDER: The Hillcrest parking lot is not the Kitty Hawk Transfer Station! If you see someone dropping off unwanted items at Hillcrest, please direct them to the Transfer Station.

--- Submitted by Joel Newton, Properties Director MEMBERSHIP / BOAT SLIP RENTALS MEMBERSHIP: At the end of May we had 1557 paid memberships. While this is a good number and generally on track with prior years, our goal is 1800. If you have not renewed yet but you are reading this, please do so as soon as possible. We are mailing out @ 400 reminders to 2017 and 2018 members who have not yet renewed, but we are always happy to see you if you simply walk into the office. Remember office hours are M, T, Th, and F 10-1. Every owner in Southern Shores should be a member. Please encourage your friends and neighbors to join or renew. It’s time to be sporting those gold decals and parking passes.

MARINA RENTALS: A few slip are still available, but these will likely fill up in the next month. As of the end of May we are at @ 85% of budget on slip rentals. Because we have had lots of calls for dry dock slips (which are full), we are looking at the possibility of adding dry slips. More to come on that. We currently have a waiting list for dry dock if you want to get on that. Please contact Jeff Johnson at 919-414-0593 or Randy Grimes via the SSCA Office 252-261-8617 to rent a slip or canoe rack or to get more information on the marinas. Finally, would the owner of the green Old Town canoe tied to top rack #6 at Loblolly please call Jeff Johnson? ---Submitted by Jeff Johnson, Membership Director & Boat Slip Manager

VOLUNTEERS & SOCIAL EVENTS Beach Clean Up: With the specter of a rainout for the annual beach clean-up at 8:30am on April 13, the start-up noted impressively 34-40 participants, compared to 16 last year. Led by Joel newton, the 33 SSCA crossover/beach assignments were quickly made and large, biodegradable trash bags were generously handed out. After 2-3 hours, 48 trash bags were collected and placed in a dumpster at the 9th Avenue crossover repair site. Joel had arranged for disposal at the last minute when the town was unable to provide assistance. All participants were welcomed to donuts, coffee and bottled water both before and after the clean-up. According to a number of participants, the crossovers and beach areas were not nearly as littered as last year. There were two exceptions: one a large trawler net that had somehow washed over the dune and secondly, a half-filled 5 gallon diesel oil can that had to be taken to waste recycling.

On the lighter side, one large seal was spotted resting all morning near the triangle park crossover. In all, the spirit of the volunteers was an encouraging start to earth week. Special kudos go out to Tisa Head and Betsy McCaughey who cleaned up 6 crossovers from 1st to 6th Ave where a substantial amount of litter was collected. Volunteer Appreciation Social: Nice weather greeted us at 11:30am on May 3rd at our N. Marina for our annual Social honoring the 100+ active volunteers of the SSCA. 144 members plus 16 guests RSVP’d and 136 total showed up, including 11 guests. Another 10 or so casual guests and musicians were also fed. There were no walk ins as late requests were accommodated up to May 2nd. There was plenty of food and beverages and a bounty of brownies and other sweets were graciously brought by the membership – thanks so much for your generosity. Little went to waste as extra food and sweets were made available to the fire department, EMS crews and members who stayed to clean-up. Some supplies were returned by vendors. A total of $30 was contributed by members. Music was delightfully provided by EZ Malone. Decorations by Nancy Williams greeted everyone as they arrived. These and other well thought out considerations allowed a festival atmosphere to prevail throughout. Parking was no problem as Randy Grimes, Tony DiBernardo and John Walker kept everything well organized. The manageable size of the crowd was a major help throughout. Chick and Joe Raffa controlled the registration and provided premade name tags to all who RSVP’d. The event was made most convivial by Steve Kiosis of Stack ‘Em High who provided excellent food that he prepared happily on site, and also kept things moving along with his bright personality and well trained crew.

Happy Earth Day!

Page 6: PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE: June 2019

The highlight of the event was the presentation and acknowledgement of the ten volunteers of the year in addition to Joel Newton’s hard working crossover construction volunteers. Hats were provided to all who were honored and pins awarded to the hardest workers. In brief: THANK YOU TO ALL YOU GREAT CITIZENS – THE VOLUNTEERS OF SOUTHERN SHORES! --- Submitted by Bill Cogger, Volunteers Director & Social Events Coordinator BEAUTIFICATION AND MARINAS Westside Properties: We have been involved in the repair and redistribution for trash collection at our parks, marinas and selected crossovers. We are currently assessing needs for additional public cans. Additionally, our volunteer coordinator, Bill Cogger, is always pleased to have additional volunteers to place cans out on collection days. Several projects, including repair of the docks, redesign of the dry dock boat storage area, upgrades to the canoe/kayak racks and refurbishment of the picnic tables in Soundview Park and in the North Marina are in process – look for updates or announcements as they reach completion. --- Submitted by Paul Schollaert, Beautification Director & Marina Property Manager
