I hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving.

Now that we have put away the Thanksgiving trinkets,

it is time to celebrate my favorite time of year. I love

decorating for Christmas, shopping till I drop, and

wrapping gifts to place under the tree. We don’t get

to enjoy making snowballs like they do up north, but it

is fun to bring out the holiday quilts and snuggle up

with some nice cold eggnog, or apple cider. I wish all

of you in my quilting family a Merry Christmas, and/or

a very blessed Hanukkah.

My early gift from all of you this year was the

opportunity to serve as President of the Gold Coast

Quilters Guild. Throughout my year as president, I

have gained a much greater appreciation for the ladies

who make up the board of this great guild. As my

term draws to a close I would especially like to thank

the officers and board members who, through their

unselfishness and generosity kept the guild on the

right track this year. These ladies worked relentless

hours behind the scenes to make this guild run so suc-

cessfully. Without the time and talents of these

members Gold Coast would not be what it is today.

Last but not least I would like to thank you, the mem-

bers, for attending meetings, volunteering, and being

active participants. As I move from the position of

President to Past-President, I am glad this is not fare-

well, but just a change of roles. It is such a pleasure

to have learned, laughed, and participated with such a

wonderful group of women.

Before the baton is passed over to our new and

very capable President Raine Cavallo, I would also like

to wish her and the incoming board of directors a year

of many successes. Raine not only shares our passion

for quilting, but also teaches quilting, and has exhib-

ited her appliqué skills in shows. I know the new board

will take us on a journey that is both exciting and re-

warding, and they will be happily supported by us all.

Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and Happy

New Year in quilting to you all!!!!!!!!!!

Gold Coast Quilter’s Guild Minutes General Meeting—November 16th, 2010

President Victoria Magnacca opened the meeting at 7 pm with the theme of Thanksgiving. Program Chair Barbara Hahl outlined upcoming programs and workshops (see details in her article) and introduced tonight’s program, a trunk show by the sisters from Buggy Barn. Shelly Recicar told of plans for appliqué workshops in 2011. Linda Freyer announced that our group has made 340 pillowcases for the ConKerr Cancer program. There is still time to make and submit one. Orphan Block Chair Marge Lehrer indicated that 3 quilts are up for adoption in a Chinese auction @ $5 for 3 tickets. Membership Chair Tammie Clarke is accepting dues for 2011. Those who have paid may pick up their new membership cards and donation quilt tickets. There are only a few places left for the Retreat. We need a librarian for next year. After the break, Victoria noted that the December 7th board meeting will begin with a pot luck supper, outgoing board members to bring main course, incoming to bring dessert; guild will provide beverages. It will begin at 6:00 PM. For the December Member meeting, members are invited to bring a wrapped gift valued between $5-10 for exchange. There will also be a cookie exchange. Creative Chair Judy Shelton reminded us that the theme for December Show and Tell will be Holidays. Exhibits Chair Marianne Haycook told of “The Art World meets the Quilt World” exhibit which opened on Sunday, 11/14 at the Rosen Gallery at the Boca JCC. It will run through 12/18, M-F 10-4. As Chair of the 2011 Donation Quilt, which she made with Marlys Cordes , and quilted by Kathy Cochrane , she reported that another version of the donation quilt, quilted by Barbara Hahl, is on exhibit and for sale at the Rosen Gallery exhibit. Jane Gavlick and Sue Glasnapp , Quilts of Valor Chairs stated that 25 quilts were delivered to Sunrise VA, which has a waiting list of veterans wanting quilts. They received 15 finished quilts and 7 tops tonight. Sue’s husband has created a website to display all the quilts our guild has made for the Quilts of Valor program. Check QOV article for web address. Quilts for Caring Chair Dotty Levine announced a cutting party on 11/27. Block of the Month Chairs, Nancy Fuerstenau and Kathy Scahill chose Barb Petras ’s block for the group quilt, and her ticket was also picked to receive the other 6 blocks submitted this month. Colette Kassal won one of the orphan block quilts and JoAnn Marino won the other 2. Raine Cavallo thanked par-ticipants for food contributions to Boca Helping Hands. The $25 Publix gift card was won by Tonky Bofill . Chairs Betty David and Jane Kimberly facilitated Show and Tell. Meeting adjourned at 8:40. Introducing *BOM 2011* We have fallen in love . . . . with “the Farmer’s Wife Sampler Quilt’ by Laurie Aaron Hird. We plan on treating you to tidbits from the book, interesting notes from the 1920's such as ‘flappers’, Model T’s and prohibition and 12 delightful blocks. Get out your scrap baskets. Almost any fabrics will work including muted reds and yellows and off whites rather than brights. Think contrast and be creative and inspired. All the blocks will be 6 ½ inch unfinished and two will be chosen each month. Hand or machine piece, use the provided templates or the cutting instructions. We hope to have something for everyone. Join the fun. There will be more information available at the December meeting. Look for the January block instructions in this De-cember newsletter. Questions? 'Get The Points' Report Wow, we had lots of people coming over to the points table to get their "Big Prizes" tonight. Several of you need to check on your points total (call me if you want at 561-272-3928) as you are only a few points short of your next level! Two mem-

bers reached 100 points this month: Eileen Kopew and Judy Shelton. Three more reached the 250 point level: Evelyn Levy, Margaret Mehall and Bonnie Ross . Be sure to come by and get your goodies!! December is the last time to turn in Pillow Pals or Quilts for Caring for this years points and then we will start all over! Have a great Thanksgiving! I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catchers mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back. ~Maya Angelou Bonnie Ross

Care 2 Share aka Heart Blocks. Celeste Welhaf was hospitalized recently with a severe case of Shingles. She’s recuperated well. Ruth Leeds husband passed away recently. Joanne Hamburger recently had a pacemaker put in. She is home and on the mend. Please send heart blocks to those members who are sick and/or suffer a loss. Thank you! Don’t forget to SHARE your personal & family events! Thanks! [email protected]

All about Appliqué This has been a busy and fabulous year. I never dreamed that appliqué would become so popular. The first few meetings of the bee were so empty and now it is all a buzz. Next year should be a great year too. Our first workshop is Monday, January. 3rd at Patch Reef Park from 9:30 - 2:30. There is a $10 fee. We will be learning about the history of Baltimore's: fabrics they used, and embroidery techniques. Then we can play by selecting fabric or stitching on block 1 or 2. Of course, we will be doing everything by hand. I brought the machine pieced example to the guild meeting so that people could see that this is applicable to a wide variety of techniques and not just a traditional look or hand appliqué. I have also altered the large leaf in block 2 for the workshop if any-one wants to make a two toned leaf. There will be no appliqué bee meeting in December. Tip: I find that books are difficult to trace or photocopy so I take them to a copy center and have the binding cut off. Add them to a loose leaf notebook or have a spiral binding added by the copy center. Your patterns will be much easier to use. Keep expanding your horizons to find the inner artist. Hugs to all, Shelly Recicar

I would like to thank the Appliqué Workshop teachers, Barbara Gualtieri, Jean DeFrances, Raine Cavallo, Dotty Levine, and Shelly Recicar, for the lovely card and gift certificate to Three Crafty Quilters they gave me in appreciation for my help during the workshops. You are the best! Claire

QUILTS OF VALOR

www.tinyurl.com/bh4w5t (This is the website with the Quilts of Valor photos.)

As we busily prepare for the holidays, take a few mo-

ments to stop and think about the U.S. service mem-

bers who are stationed far from their families. Please

consider making a Quilt of Valor in 2011. Jane and

Sue already have a new quilt pattern for the next

QOV workshop, to be held on February 25th.

The enthusiastic response of many of our members

has been wonderful this year. Since January, we have

received 131 completed quilts. Well done! To view

all of the quilts that have been donated in the past

three years, click on the link (or copy and paste) that

appears at the top of this article.

In November, fifteen completed quilts were turned in.

We thank these generous ladies: Peg Bernath, Betty

David, Edna Deppen, Carol Esser, Jane Gavlick,

Sue Glasnapp, Toby Gluckstern, Lynn O’Neil, Diane

Provost, Doris Sagor, Lucia Underhill, and Ellen

Weston.

Jane and Sue have been invited to present a program

about Quilts of Valor to the Palm Beach Quilt Guild at

their January meeting. We are excited to be able to

share our QOV story with their members.

The 2011 Wounded Warriors Project Soldier Ride

ceremony at the Miami VA Medical Center will be held

on Jan. 12th. If you’d like information about it, con-

tact Jane or Sue.

After serving as co-chairmen of the QOV committee

for three years, Jane and Sue are passing this role on

to two ladies who have graciously accepted the task –

Kathy Cochrane and Stormy Schevis. Jane and Sue

will continue to organize and host the QOV workshops.

We thank all of our members who have aided in our

efforts and ask that you give Kathy and Stormy the

same wonderful support you have demonstrated to us.

Best wishes and Happy Holidays to all.

PILLOW PAL NEWS We would like to thank you for two wonderful years with Pillow Pals. It has been our honor to serve on the Pillow Pal committee. We have been grateful for the generosity of our members, but it is time for us to move on in the spirit of rotation. This month we donated Pillow Pals to the Cha-bad in Parkland for Hanukkah and are getting ready to do-nate the remainder of Pillow Pals in our possession to Boca Helping Hands. We received 22 Pillow Pals. Shelly's oldest daughter, Mary, volunteers at Family Prom-ise, a homeless shelter. Mary never liked the Pillow Pals all that much but was asked to distribute them since her Mom's quilt guild donated them. Mary said the children and adults all wanted one and that the people could not believe that someone would take the time to make some-thing for them. The sincerity of the recipients brought my daughter to tears and helped to remind me why we do this. We hope this story warms your heart during this sea-son of giving. In appreciation of your work and devotion to children in crisis, Charlotte N., Ellen R. and Shelly R.

QUILTS FOR CARING Thank you, Thank you, to all of you that have made quilts, attended cutting parties and contributed fab-ric. We have had a wonderful year. As of November we have collected 326 quilts. They have been do-nated to various charitable organizations and this week I will take many more to JAFCO and the Cari-dad Center. There has been an increasing need for comfort this last year. Also, I want to thank my friend Carol Esser for working with me this last year. She is always willing to do anything and always has a smile on her face. We will continue our partnership next year and hope that thanks to all of you we will have even more quilts to donate. Happy Holidays and Thanks for Caring Dotty Levine & Carol Esser Pictures from the Quilts for Caring Cutting Party! Thanks every-one for your time and talents!

Get out your mixing bowl and cookie sheets. We are having the cookie ex-change at the December meeting. Everyone is invited to participate. All you have to do is make three dozen cookies using your favorite rec-ipe. We request no chocolate chip cookies because they seem to be every-one’s favorite and we don’t get a great variety when we include them. Divide your cookies into six zip-lock bags with six cookies in each bag. If you bring six bags, you will take home six different bags. It is impor-tant that you label your cookies if they contain nuts. Sharing your rec-ipe is your choice. If you want to share your recipe, you will need about 15 copies for members to take.

BEEKEEPER’S BUZZ Stories from times past...

Ruth Brill is our only 26 year Life-time

member of GCQG! Can you trace your quilting roots to Ruth?

We appreciate you, Ruth!

An Afternoon at the Theatre! I am relating this story because everything of the entire afternoon presented life from a different point of view. We went to the Theater in Delray in our own car. We didn’t have a problem with parking. Most pa-trons come by special busses from their developments. The busses left and the parking lot was al-most empty. Only the few who drive cars are parked in the lot. Younger people come to the eve-ning performance. I picked up our tickets because I didn’t have a season ticket. The place was buzzing with people—some were waiting for friends, others were looking for an empty chair to sit in (the lobby isn’t sup-posed to furnish enough chairs as the number of seats in the Theater program but they hope to find one). I sat down on one of those special chairs and I looked around and realized we were all Senior Citizens! We found our seats in the Theater and we sit down. Row G Seats 7 and 8. The man who was sit-ting in front of me was wearing a sport jacket. I notice the back seam of the jacket is showing the threads, so I knew he was fatter in his younger years. His wife probably told him he had to wear a jacket, and he found one in the back of the closet. It’s a little wrinkled, but who cares? He wore a jacket to suit his Old Lady! The jacket isn’t clean, but $15 to have it dry-cleaned and put one button on is just too much. It’s dark in the Theater and no one will know the difference. His sweetheart from High School is his partner. She is dressed in her best; it’s a little big- the dress, but she lost weight and it has a belt. She has had her hair fixed and her special shawl will keep her warm. Oops I for-got she also had her nails done because her friends had theirs done. Intermission—some one couldn’t remember their seat number. They found the row because they recognized their neighbor. The number was important so they made a fuss! Well, they all sat down.

Most everyone is plump, but one soul was on the wrong side of the row. But insisted she didn’t want to walk around to the other side, so everyone had to try to stand up gracefully and let her by to sit in Row G, Seat 7. The line to the Ladies room at intermission was long and some have little pa-tience, my friend said after sitting down after intermission. I didn’t hear eve-rything and I noticed there were three empty seats closer to the front. Mind if we move? Not at all dear, so we moved to the front. Thoughts while waiting for the curtain to go up? Am I one of these? Same group? I see many wrinkles, slower walks, your next door neighbor is her name June or Jane? Hugs and Kisses are now hard on my poor old Heart! Ruth

Quilts of Valor delivered some quilts to the VA in Sunrise. Sherrill gave us some copies of thank you notes written by the recipients of our quilts. One of mine is particularly touching, so I thought I would submit it to you for the newsletter. Jane Gavlick Dear Jane, A few weeks ago, while visiting the Broward VA Clinic, my social worker Emily Sherman was kind enough to give me one of your quilts that you made. I wanted to take a moment to write you a letter to tell you Thanks. But it doesn’t seem like enough.

Throughout my years in service to our great nation, I’ve learned that anytime we feel this way is when we have been served by a hero.

Heroes go above and beyond the call to reach out to our American family in ways most do not. Recently I returned from an overseas tour and unfortunately I was not one of those soldiers with

family members who regularly send care packages. Luckily for me, there were folks like you who took the time and expense to send people like me

gifts of thanks, gratitude and appreciation. America is great not just because of people like me but also because of people like you, Jane,

and people like Emily and her supervisor Sherrill Valdes. It is my understanding that Sherrill is the one who got you all that are local quilters together to do this.

I hope the opportunity becomes available for us to meet, so I can thank you personally for doing

something so wonderful for us veterans and our country. It is your support that helps make our service possible. Many thanks indeed! Jude Holman SFC, U.S. Army

At the last QOV workshop: Stormy Schevis, Theresa Ryan Jane Gavlick, Chris Ryan (Kathy Cochrane’s son), Mikayla (Granddaughter), Kathy Cochrane, & Sue Glasnapp Chris and Theresa wanted to thank all those who had been praying for his safe return, and they felt that the QOV workshop was the ideal opportunity! Thanks for YOUR SERVICE Chris!
