After a long and hot summer, faculty returned to campus for convocation on Thursday, August 18 in the Community Services Center on main campus. After a short welcome and introduction from the vice president for Academic Services and Student Development, Dr. Thomas Leamer, a pre-recorded speech from President Snyder outlined the important issues facing the College and its constituents this coming academic year. After thanking everyone for their hard work and dedication, President Snyder commented that limited resources are going to be the rule rather than the exception in the months ahead and that the continued support of the staff and faculty will see the College through these tough times. Of course, convocation is a time for celebration also and recognition of those that have gone above and beyond in their role at LCCC. Both Judy Ehninger, assistant professor of medical assisting and Dr. Brad Prutzman, associate professor of Physics/Chemistry were recognized as recipients of the NISOD award and the much anticipated President’s Convocation award winners were announced. Dr. Lisa Martini-Johnson, associate professor and assistant director of the Veterinary Technician program, received the faculty award which was presented by dean of Academic Services, Dr. Barry Spriggs.

The campus is in full swing again and it’s so great to see all of our studentsback! The positive energy and excitement in the air are wonderful. We kicked off another great academic year with our August 21st Convocation. Great achievements of our staff and faculty were recognized. For those of you who have been watching our campus transform, the campusconstruction is well underway and almost complete, with the moving of Orchard Road as the last piece to the puzzle. The renovated Berrier Hall opened in the spring and features a state-of-the-art fitness facility for our students, staff and faculty. A few weeks ago, we recognized the accomplishments of our graduates at our Summer Graduate Recognition Ceremony. We’ve also celebrated with our friends and

donors at our 18th Annual Golf Tournament, raising more than $30,000 for our student scholarship fund, run through the LCCC Foundation. The next event to raise money for our well-deserving students is the 8th Annual Moon Dance, to take place once again, on campus in our Community Services Center. The Moon Dance will be on November 12 and we look forward to seeing you there.

LCCC’s Business Enterprise Center (BEC) has a full roster of speakers to celebrate the 3rd annual Entrepreneur Week, September 26-29. This year’s theme is “Creating Economic Vitality Through Entrepreneurship.” The BEC is designed to help business students in developing their business plans and has a myriad of resources available to them, including the assistance of entrepreneurs/mentors available to coach students with the design and finance aspect of their projects. Each morning begins with an open house from 8-9:30 am with free coffee and donuts. Sessions will be held Monday through Thursday on topics such as Green Business, Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), banking’s role in setting up a small business, legal ramifications and social media. All presentations will take place in the new John E.

The recipient of the Educational Support Professional award went to Fran Shellhammer, admissions office assistant, who was also recognized for recently completing her associate degree at LCCC. Finally, Tina Moyer, director of the Career Development Center, was recognized as the recipient of the Administrative Professional award. A moment of remembrance was offered for those that had passed away including Board of Trustees member, Joe Volk, Dr. Ingrid Brunner and Elizabeth Staub. Retirees Louise Hill and Deb Hock were recognized as well as all of the new employees who joined the LCCC family.

Welcome week is all about the new students at LCCC. Representatives from Student Life set up a tent for the entire week, which was staffed by students, faculty and staff to answer questions, give directions and hand out materials. Over 2,000 student planners were distributed and over 2,000 prizes were given out on the prize wheel! Free hot dogs and water were also provided throughout the week. Gene Mater provided caricature portraits on Tuesday and Wednesday

and the Switchblade Sisters did a hula hoop demo and workshop on Monday and Wednesday. And of course, the Cougar was out and about on Monday and Wednesday to greet students!

commencement Congratulations to all the graduates recognized at the summer commencement ceremony on Sunday, August 21 in LCCC’s Community Services Center. 170 students were awarded and 172 degrees at the event (one person got two degrees!) During his congratulatory speech, vice president for Academic Services and Student Development, Dr. Thomas Leamer, quoted famous novelist Robert Louis Stevenson’s daily dozen as good advice for the graduates:

1. Make up your mind to be happy 2. Make the best of your circumstances 3. Don’t take yourself too seriously 4. You can’t please everybody 5. Don’t let someone else set your standards - Be yourself 6. Do the things you enjoy doing 7. Don’t borrow trouble - imaginary burdens are harder to bear than actual ones 8. Hate poisons the soul, so don’t carry grudges 9. Have many interests 10. Don’t hold postmortems - in other words don’t be one who never gets over things

golf tournament This year marked the 18th consecutive year of the LCCC Foundation Golf Classic. The event netted more than $33,000 of scholarships for LCCC students. Once again Lehigh Country Club’s fabulous course conditions and the on-course events made this a fun day for all. The new “Designated Driver” event was also a big “hit” and gave everyone a chance to meet a couple of our current students. Over 30 volunteers came out and showed their support of this long running event that couldn’t be accomplished without them. Everyone enjoyed a fabulous lunch on the terrace with views that captured the beauty of the entire facility. Dinner was another special encounter that had many great pallet

pleasing items from the oyster and clams on the half shell and succulent gulf coast shrimp to the carved beef tenderloin and smoked turkey breast.

wellness fair During the first week of school, Berrier Hall hosted a Wellness Fair to introduce new students to the facilities available at the newly renovated center. Representatives from various safety and health organizations were on hand to provide advice on topics such as smoking cessation, alcohol and DUI, and cancer prevention. The LCCC Physical Therapist Assistant students were also “on hand” to give massages - perfect for stress reduction! Mini fitness sessions were also offered for Trekking, Abs & Arms and Zumba! with Julie, Marge & Jocelyn. Door prize raffles took place each day with prizes such as highlighters, pens, gift certificates to the bookstore and other goodies! Healthy snacks were distributed throughout the week, promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle.

The proceeds, which directly benefit the LCCC Foundation scholarship fund, allow many students to achieve their dreams and greatest potential by obtaining a college education. LCCC’s mission (and passion) is to provide a high-quality education through open access and affordability. Joseph Volk, who served on LCCC’s Board of Trustees for more than 40 years, will be remembered as a prominent and active member of his community. His service to Coopersburg through the Borough Council for 8 years, the Zoning Hearing Board for 29 years, the Coopersburg Historical Society, Coopersburg Community Day, the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity of the Lehigh Valley were just a few of his activities. He passed away in August, after a long battle with cancer. As a long-standing member of the LCCC Board of Trustees, Volk will be missed by his fellow Board of Trustee members, as well as the College community at large. Volk attended his very first board meeting on July 2, 1970 and has touched the lives of many in his 41 years at LCCC. In a recent interview for Aspire magazine, Volk’s love and passion for the College was unmistakable. “I have been very proud, over the years, to tell people that I am a Trustee at LCCC.” Volk was married to his life-long love and best friend, Peggy, for 55 years and leaves behind four children and four grandchildren.

Continuing the partnership with Artsquest and Musikfest, WXLV, the radio station of LCCC, were proud to be the official emcees at the brand new Levitt Pavillion at Americaplatz. The stage sits directly below the majestic Steel Stacks of the retired Bethlehem Steel Site. The entire area has been converted into the Musikfest’s Southside featuring an indoor movie theater, a third floor indoor concert hall, the outdoor Air Products Square and of course the WXLV sponsored Levitt Pavilion. Despite the rain, and setbacks reported on the northside of Musikfest, things went very smoothly for WXLV throughout the week. The collective dedication of volunteers that support WXLV showed through with DJs being represented throughout

the festival. In fact, the task of emceeing came almost natural with an opportunity to promote both WXLV and Lehigh Carbon Community College with signage, a beautifully decorated booth and verbal advertisements. Many of the stage managers commented that WXLV had truly been an asset to the operations of Levitt Pavilion.
