Queen City Camp June 29 – July 3Grade Level: 2 – 7

Did you know that the Cincinnati Reds used to play just outside of Union Terminal’s front doors? Or that underneath beautiful Washington Park used to be a graveyard? Venture into the city with us as we tour some of our local landmarks. Go behind the scenes of Union Terminal, City Hall, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the Cincinnati Reds. Play classic games at Smale Riverfront Park and discuss the significance of the Roebling Suspension Bridge. Enjoy lunch at Washington Park and learn about the historic events that have occurred at Music Hall. You’ll be a Queen City scholar by the end of the week!

Messy Science June 22 – June 26 Grade Level: 2 – 4

Melted sugar? Liquid dish soap? Spend the week getting your hands dirty as we dive into some messy science. We’ll make bouncy balls, play dough and silly putty for starters. Have you ever blown bubbles using dry ice? How about making your own candy? Spend time in the Duke Energy Children’s Museum Energy Zone and learn about physics while you are playing with the simple machines. Don’t miss out on a full week of fun experiments you can teach others to do at home!

Nano ScienceJune 29 – July 3 Grade Level: 4 – 7

Nano science is like magic. You can’t touch it or see it without special tools, but there are practical uses for it every day. Nanotechnology is the science behind powering computers, protecting soldiers and making bouncier tennis balls. Spend time in the STEM Discovery Lab this week with our resident physicist testing olfactory senses, observing the sticky feet of a gecko and creating a working circuit on a piece of paper using a pencil. We’ll also visit the University of Cincinnati to meet scientists and explore their working laboratories. It’s a small science that’s a big deal!

Collectors CampJuly 6 – July 10 Grade Level: 7 – 9

Do you think keeping a collection is serious business? Our museum curators sure do! Whether it is baseball cards, beanie babies or dinosaur bones, learn how to turn your own treasure box into a real collection by developing a catalogue. Go behind closed doors at Union Terminal and the Geier Collections & Research Center to see our history and science collections. Curate your own exhibit for the Friday parent reception after conducting your own research in the Historical Society Library.

Maker CampJuly 13 – July 17 Grade Level: 4 – 9

Do you love DIY and hands-on challenges? This camp is made for you! Using real tools, this week is all about building robots, testing our sewing machine skills and making simple circuits. Grab a 70” tall box and work in teams to design a room with a purpose in our Designer Box Challenge. We’ll crown a winner based on criteria such as purpose, layout and use of fabric. See how a real life maker designed an armored car to travel into a tornado. We’ll also build forts and test our city planning skills. Get inspired to participate in Cincinnati’s own Mini Maker Faire at Union Terminal later this year.

In the Field: Archeology/PaleontologyJuly 20 – July 24 Grade Level: 4 – 7

Walk back in time in the museum of Natural History & Science and see what lived here in the Miami Valley and some of the giants that lived out west. We’ll go creeking at the Cincinnati Nature Center and search for fossils, participate in an active archaeological dig at the Hahn Site Field School and travel to Big Bone Lick State Park to see some of the prehistoric beasts that used to roam freely where we live today. This is a great opportunity to get our hands dirty and learn about the archaeology and geology of this unique region.

Dissect a StoryJuly 6 – July 10 Grade Level: 2 – 7

You know not to judge a book by its cover, but have you ever thought about what comes first – the picture or the story? Dive into middle earth, ancient Egypt and the dystopian future of some of the most popular book series this week and challenge yourself to bring them to life. Take a closer look at bringing animation from paper to the screen. Follow clues that lead to hidden passages in Union Terminal, build a castle out of boxes to defend against a siege of medieval weapons and de-code a hieroglyphic message. By the end of the week you’ll learn how to bind your own book and draft your own story. Let your imagination run wild as we start chapter one of your future writing career!
