REVIEWS ON THE PRESIDENT’S WEIGHTLIFTING CUP

The creation of the President’s Cup is a great initiative. After more than twenty years of silence, the Russian Weightlifting Federation gave life signal. As far as I am concerned, I always make a distinction between countries that have a culture of weightlifting and those who have registered weightlifters. Here in Russia there is a strong tradition and a real culture of this sport. The Russian Weightlifting Federation’s leadership wants to breathe life back into Russian weightlifting and host high international level competitions such as the Friendship Cup used to be in the past. The President’s Cup proved the Russian weightlifters didn’t stop their training after the 2011 IWF World Weightlifting Championships Paris, France and as a consequence; five fantastic world records were achieved. Of course the significant prize money had a great influence on athletes’ motivation.

The organization was fantastic, with a lot of new theatrical elements and effective innovations. The spectacle was truly amazing, thanks to a rich budget. High-quality music, dance, characterized these two days, combined with super lighting effects and visual solutions. We enjoyed here in friendly Belgorod’s Khorkina Sport Complex a well organized competition and I am glad to know that the series will continue. Our sport needs to show these programs more often to the world. Next year, St. Petersburg will host the President’s Cup, and the level will be certainly even higher. The 2012 calendar is full of very exciting competitions, and we will do out best to find the right date for this unique event.

HISTORY OF WEIGHTLIFTING IN ST.PETERSBURG

In 1885 doctor Vladislav Kraevsky opened the first in Russia athletics club at his office on Iskusstv Sq. This was the start of the Russian weightlifting and bodybuilding.

The idea to open a museum of weightlifting came to Georgy Korkhov in the 1990s. The archives of the Honored Master of Sports Leon Epstein formed the base of exposition.

The idea to develop the museum of weightlifting was widely supported by the weightlifting community, sportsmen and sport officials. Their dream came true in 2005 when the Museum of Athletism was opened in one of the schools of St.Petersburg.

Eminent champions donated their medals, diplomas, photographs, trophies and awards to the museum. Among them are Yuri Duganov, Evgeniy Penkovskiy, Boris Selitskiy, Pavel Pervushin, Nikolay Ippolitov and many others

SIGHTSEEING IN ST.PETERSBURG

St.Petersburg - founded in 1703 - is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Its magnificent palaces, gardens, churches, parks and gardens leave an indelible impression and remain forever in the memory of every guest who visited this great city.

Peter the Great was planning the city on the model of Venice and Amsterdam. Instead of stone paced streets, St.Petersburg was supposed to be covered by a network of channels for the citizens to float on boats and small vessels. This was facilitated by the fact that there are about 100 rivers, streams and canals, over 20 channels within the city limits. The total length of rivers and canals is around 300 km, and the water surface reaches 1/10 of the city territory.

There are over 200 museums in the city including the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, the Central Naval Museum, Research Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts and St.Petersburg History Museum.
