Seattle Chapter - American Singles Golf Association — May 2011 CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA President’s Corner As the, reportedly, coldest April in re- corded Seattle history recedes in the rear- view mirror, we can look ahead to better golf weather. Maybe. The golf events at The Home Course (April 17) and Snoqualmie Falls (May 1) are also behind us- thanks to Karly Kniffin and George Weller- and we can look forward to Lynnwood on May 14, the central Washing- ton road trip over May 21 – 23 and The Nile on June 4. The Lynnwood event is being hosted by Virginia DeVos. John Sweeney is our tour guide for central Washington. The event at The Nile is courtesy of Wayne Mulholland. Our golf event hosts invest considerable time and energy in scheduling, planning and running events, so I encour- age everyone to show our collectively ap- preciation for their efforts by participating in these events. After all, golf is the common denominator that brought most, if not all, of our members to ASGA. At the May meeting of the membership on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, we are bringing back the dessert auction. This event can be a lot of fun and will generate some needed revenue for our club. Our costs are up sub- stantially this year due to the decision to experiment with having the club pay the entry fees for the golf hosts, with courses requiring higher percentages for deposits with our contracts and some courses charging nonrefundable tournament fees to schedule an event. Due to the auction, there will be no raffle at the May meet- ing. I’m sure the desserts will be deli- cious, so get together with your table- mates and see which table can raise the most money for our club. Other golf events to plan for now are the Wenatchee trip June 10 –12, hosted by Larry Bash and Karen Teramoto and a trip to Tri Cities September 17- 19 hosted by Carletta Barnes and Jann Sheridan. All scheduled golf events should now be available on the calendar at our chap- ter’s website: seattle.singlesgolf.com . CELEBRATING 18 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA

President’s Corner As the, reportedly, coldest April in re-corded Seattle history recedes in the rear-view mirror, we can look ahead to better golf weather. Maybe. The golf events at The Home Course (April 17) and Snoqualmie Falls (May 1) are also behind us- thanks to Karly Kniffin and George Weller- and we can look forward to Lynnwood on May 14, the central Washing-ton road trip over May 21 – 23 and The Nile on June 4. Our golf event hosts invest considerable time and energy in scheduling, planning and running events, so I encour-age everyone to show our collectively ap-preciation for their efforts by participating in these events. After all, golf is the common denominator that brought most, if not all, of our members to ASGA. At the May meeting of the membership on Tuesday, May 10, 2011, we are bringing back the dessert auction. This event can be a lot of fun and will generate some needed revenue for our club. First Joke Little boy comes down to breakfast. Since they live on a farm, his mother asks if he had done his chores. "Not yet," said the little boy. “Then get out and do them,” says his mother. Well, he's a little pushed out of shape, so he goes to feed the chickens, and he kicks a chicken. He goes to feed the cows, and he kicks a cow. He goes to feed the pigs, and he kicks a pig. He goes back in for breakfast and his mother gives him a bowl of dry cereal. "How come I don't get any eggs and bacon? Why don't I have any milk in my cereal?" he asks. "Well," his mother says, "I saw you kick a chicken, so you don't get any eggs for a week. I saw you kick the pig, so you don't get any bacon for a week either. I saw you kick the cow so for a week you aren't get-ting any milk." Just then, his father comes down for breakfast and kicks the cat halfway across the kitchen. The little boy looks up at his mother with a smile, and says, "You gonna tell him or should I?"

Wayne’s Information for May WATER vs. COKE

WATER 1. 75% OF Americans Are chronically

dehydrated. 2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mecha-

nism is so weak that it is mistaken for hunger.

3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%.

4. One glass of water will shut down mid-night hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied in a University of Washington study.

5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.

6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could signifi-cantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.

7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trou-ble with basic math, and difficulty fo-cusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.

8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily de-creases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer. Are you drinking the amount of water you should drink every day?

COKE 1. In many states the highway patrol car-

ies two gallons of Coke in the trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident. (As a retired CHP, Wayne says this is true)

2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of Coke and it will be gone in two days.

3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola into the toilet bowl and let the “real thing” sit for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in Coke removes stains from vitreous china.

4. To remove rust spots from chrome car bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rum-pled-up piece of Reynolds Wrap alumi-num foil dipped in Coca-Cola.

5. To clean corrosion from car battery terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the terminals to bubble away the corrosion.

6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Apply a cloth soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several minutes.

7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the ham is fin-ished, remove the foil, allowing the drippings to mix with the Coke for a sumptuous brown gravy.

8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can of Coke into the load of greasy clothes , add detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains. It will also clean road haze from your windshield.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION 1. The active ingredient in Coke is phos-

phoric acid. It will dissolve a nail in about four days. Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from bones and is a major contributor to the rising increase of osteoporosis.

2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concen-trate) the commercial trucks must use a hazardous Material place card re-served for highly corrosive materials.

3. The distributors of Coke have been using it to clean engines of the trucks for about 20 years!

Now the question is, would you like a glass of water or Coke?

Past Events Spring Golf at The Home Course Twenty-eight turned out on April 17 for the 4th annual golf event at The Home Course. The forecasters were right – 80% sun and partial sun! It was a fun day with lots of laughs, lots of shots, and lots of putts. Well, some of us had lots of putts – others did much better. We had a couple of team and individual competitions. The winners enjoyed recog-nition and cash – always a welcome com-bination! Men’s Individual Low Net: Rick and Lynn tied with 68 for first, and Wayne and Ron tied for second (or third depending on how official you want to be) with 71. Evie took first for the Women’s Individual Low Net with a score of 73, Pat Bonner in sec-ond with 75, and third place to Karly Kniffin with 79. We also had an individual “poley” com-petition (putts sunk from a distance longer than the flag pole). Wayne, Pat Bonner

and Pat Walsh tied with 3 each. Honor-able mention to Virginia who chipped in from off the green! Team competitions included a modified low net which was won by Team #6, Larry, Karen, Barbara McDowell and Tim Witthauer (score 94). Second place was awarded to Team # 2, Wayne, Evie, Jack and Susan Mayon. (score 96) We also had a team putting contest with com-bined low putts. An amazingly low first place was awarded to Team #5 – Sue Haley, Renee, Mark, and Ron with a 59! Second place was Team #2 – Wayne, Evie, Jack and Susan, with 62! Congratulations to all the winners!

OBSERVATIONS NOTED ON AND OFF THE COURSE Can you match the quote below with who said it? Just like the professional tournaments, occasionally people were on a “live mic.” Here’s what was heard:

“Thank you so much for your help today. I should buy you dinner, but I won’t.”

“Weren’t you cold wearing shorts? No, she wasn’t. She had a full-length coat on in between holes. Very stylish.”

“Great putt. Thanks. Just like my hair, short and straight.”

“Never sneeze and drive a cart at the same time.”

“Come on! What’s taking so long? 99% of all golfers know they’re going to hit the 3-wood off the fairway when they’re 200 yards out!”

“Where’s S? We buried her – along with the score card.”

“I will never play this game again, and add up all these numbers.”

“You look a little beat up.”

“They did really good on their team low for putts – we should re-check the score.”

“Where’s Pat Walsh?” [As she disap-peared into a bunker.]

“He’s got the strangest skill – he can rec-ognize voices without seeing faces, and a memory for movies that’s amazing! But what can he do with it? I don’t know, but would you think of something.”

Stay tuned for the answers to these quotes. Thanks for playing The Home Course ~Karly Kniffin

Girls Night Out Thirteen adventurous people de-scended upon the big city last Saturday to enjoy a social evening together ... a fun dining experience ... and a play at the ACT Theatre. We were eleven women and two men. Wayne stayed home and Evie came with the girls. Even so, we loved it and admired the courage of Lynn Johnson and Ben Watson. By the way, Ben Watson and Cassie Jacobsen rode the Sounder into town and home again. It dropped them right at Westlake Center where we were having dinner and picked them up right there also. What a great way to travel to the city without worrying about directions, traffic and parking! We started with dinner at 6:00 at P.J. Chang's in Westlake Center. They rose to the occasion by serving us quickly with our round of drinks and wine fol-lowed by a delectable selection of flavors and styles from their excellent menu. The prices, by the way, were very rea-sonable for a Seattle restaurant and all of the comments I heard were favorable. We got our individual checks (without a murmur) and were on our way by 7:30 to trek the few blocks to the Theatre. Amazingly, our plan to all sit together worked out in spite of the fact that we bought our tickets individually and at different times. The Theatre was eager to work with us on that and gave us a great section from which to watch the play. The reviews on that were mixed. Nonetheless, we had a ball, enjoyed each other, and admired Evie's hat (in honor of the recent wedding bells in Lon-don!) I personally hope we can do this again. The city is vibrant and exciting and plays change. Thanks to Evie, Mary Jo, Pat Bonner, Ben and Cassie, Lynn John-son, Sue Haley, Barbara McDowell, Jan Friesen, Karen Kohler, Jan Laughlin, & Darla Perman for making this event so much fun. ~Patricia (Pat) Walsh

Old Chinese Proverb: "The person who says it cannot be done should not interrupt the person doing it."

Second Joke Two older women were sitting next to each other at a bar. After awhile, one looks at the other and says, 'I can't help but think from listening to you that you're from Ire-land”. The other woman responds proudly, 'Yes, I sure am!' The first one says, 'So am I! And where about in Ireland are ya from?' The other woman answers, 'I'm from Dublin, I am.' The first one responds, 'So, am I!! And what street did you live on in Dublin ?' The other woman says, 'A lovely little area. It was in the west end. I lived on Warbury Street in the old central part of town.' The first one says, 'Faith, and it's a small world. So did I! So did I! And what school did ya go to?' The other woman answers, 'Well now, I went to Holy Heart of Mary, of course.' The first one gets really excited and says, 'And so did I! Tell me, what year did you graduate?' The other woman answers, 'Well, now, let's see. I graduated in 1964.' The first woman exclaims, 'The Good Lord must be smiling down upon us! I can hardly believe our good luck at winding up in the same pub tonight! Can you believe it? I graduated from Holy Heart of Mary in 1964 me self! About this time, Michael walks into the bar, sits down and orders a beer. Brian, the bartender, walks over to Mi-chael shaking his head and mutters, It's going to be a long night tonight.' Michael asks, 'Why do you say that, Brian?' Brian answers, 'The Murphy twins are drunk again.'

Next Up Our next event will be Virginia DeVos’s annual Lynnwood get together. As of this writing there will be 28 people attending on May 14th. Good luck to all. Still time to get into the upcoming weekender at Suncadia/Moses Point/Appletree over the weekend of May 22 being organized by John Sweeney.

Just In Stuff Otherwise known as ‘Breaking News’. I don’t know how he did it but he is a pretty remarkable man. George Weller pulled a fantastic summer day out of his hat and produced an outstanding tournament at Snoqualmie Falls the past Sunday. Sun-shine, warm temperatures and some great golf. I don’t have the winners list yet. Due to deadline restrictions the paper must go out. I know putting was out of sight for the group. The “poley” competition was can-celled due to the number produced. The #6 group alone had 9. Results should be available by next month’s newsletter. The 50/50 drawing at last months meet-ing resulted in Ben Watson and Ron Voss taking home the cash prizes of $15 each. Wonder if they informed the IRS about this? Two gift certificates good for a round of golf at Kahler Glen donated by Virginia DeVos went to Tim Witthauer and Evie Falkin.

Editorial No editorial this month. I’m keeping all the good stuff for a later date. It’s sort of like the present administration in Washing-ton DC. They keep everything secret and never include me in the hot stuff. I was completely out of the loop on the mission to take out Bin Laden. ~Wayne Mulholland, Editor

Rules and More Rules Q. Larry was in the tree line the separates holes #3 and #5. Larry was playing #3. A golfer from #5 had given up looking for his ball and played on with a new ball and a penalty. A minute later, Larry found both his ball and the ball belonging to the player on hole #5. Larry shouted out to the player on #5 that he had found his ball. The player shouted back to Larry to throw him the ball. The other golfer was about 100 yards away, out of throwing range, so Larry hit the ball to him with his pitching wedge. When Larry returned to his stroke play foursome, Scott said, I think that practice hit is going to cost you a stroke or two. Was Scott correct? What is the correct ruling? A. Larry's good deed goes unpunished. Larry receives no penalty.

B. Scott was correct, practice strokes during a round are prohibited. No good deed goes unpunished. Larry receives a one stroke penalty.

C.Scott was correct, practice strokes during a round are prohibited. No good deed goes unpunished. Larry receives a two stroke penalty.

And the answer is.... The answer is A, Larry's good deed is not punished. Yes, Rule 7-2 details penalties for taking practice strokes on the course. How-ever, in this situation, Larry was acting out of courtesy, there is no penalty. Decision 7-2/5.5 Player Finds Ball and Hits It to Player Who Lost It addresses this exact situation and the decision is, no penalty.

Room-by-Yourself packages and non-golf packages are also avail-able. Non-hotel packages are available only to our Pinehurst chapter members.

Make Sure You’re a Member Before Traveling! It really should never have to be said, but sometimes we have to remind folks. In order to attend ANY multi-chapter event, you must be a member of ASGA. Multi-chapter events are special events and it’s very important that you are a member before showing-up. Who wants the embarrassment of being told to join on the spot or else? Also, we occasionally need to remind folks that our official national policy on guests is that you can attend one (1) event as a guest, either a meeting or a golf outing, but to attend any other event, you must be a member of ASGA. We’ve had comments from members asking “why should I renew my dues if others don’t have to pay?” ASGA has four (4) employees and dues income is our primary source of revenue. No revenue - no organization. Thanks for helping to spread the word about the importance of dues. To join or renew, go to www.SinglesGolf.com/join

Imagine Yourself in Ireland in 2012 - - We’re looking at bringing a group to Ireland in the Summer of 2012.

Have you been there? If you’re interested, go to our website and put your name on the list with the other 100 people. Just go to our home-page (SinglesGolf.com) and click on the photo of Old Head Golf Course in Ireland.

Event Dates: Thursday, May 26 – Sunday, May 29, 2011

With great excitement and anticipation, we’re happy to announce our continued association with the fine folks at Pinehurst Resort in an-nouncing our “Reunion in Pinehurst”. The Reun-ion on Memorial Day Weekend has shown to be ASGA’s largest-attended event each year with attendance soaring over 400 in years past. It’s a great time to see old friends and meet friends you never thought you had. Dates set for this year are May 26-29, a Thurs-day through Saturday (we polled you and that’s what you wanted!). We asked Pinehurst to price this event as if you walked-in on your own and wanted the same exact package on the same dates. The standard package would be $1593 and the room-by-yourself package would be $2349 at the Carolina. Our packages start

at $515 per person, based on double occupancy and $674 per person based on single occupancy, which includes all taxes, resort service fees, gratuities for wait and bell staff, etc. Also, ASGA will rebate to your chapter $20.00 per atten-dee if your chapter sends 10%

or more of your membership (as of 5/26/11) to this event. Got 100 members? Send ten and we’ll rebate $200.00! Details at the event website, SinglesGolf.com/pinehurst If you priced this event on its own, you’d easily pay $1200-$1300 (dbl. occ.) for all that’s included. Optional rounds on the day-of-arrival (Thursday at Pinehurst) as well as day-of-departure (Sunday at To-bacco Road Golf Club — Rated #4 Public Course in the U. S. by Golf World magazine and a Top 100 Golf Digest) are being offered as well. A registration form is enclosed with this newsletter and you can also obtain one at www.SinglesGolf.com/Pinehurst Of course, outside of everything Pinehurst has to offer, you get to meet hundreds of singles from various ASGA chapters. As with all ASGA multi-chapter events, you must be a member to attend. To join ASGA, simply go to www.SinglesGolf.com/join
