3 SECOND QUARTER 2005 IEEE CIRCUITS AND SYSTEMS MAGAZINE President’s Column Georges Gielen 2005 CAS President President’s Message W ith this column I want to inform all our CAS mem- bers about the achievements and progress of the many initiatives that are on their way in this year 2005. The CAS Society is facing many challenges, but at the same time there are many opportunities in emerging tech- nical fields as well as in emerging geographical areas. We are trying hard to address these opportunities. Many of the initiatives reported below were approved at the CAS Executive Committee (ExCom) meeting which took place on March 20 in Leuven, Belgium, and are currently in the course of being implemented. First of all, we decided to develop some tutorial mod- ules within the scope of CAS to help in the education of our members and student members. This will only be a start in a program to develop tutorial material to effi- ciently initiate our CAS members into new and emerging areas. This will happen under the IEEE Xell program. Other ideas that will be explored later on are electronic article reprint collections in specific areas. Such collec- tions contain a selection of the core articles in each area, but they are electronically linked to IEEE Xplore and updated regularly. This will make it easier for members to faster comprehend a new area. Besides these new initiatives, we also have our estab- lished Distinguished Lecturer Program (DLP), where 10 new lecturers have been appointed for a 2-year term, serving together with their colleagues appointed last year. You find the names and lecture topics on our web- site http://www.ieee-cas.org. CAS members who want to organize a local event with a Distinguished Lecturer as speaker, can invite the person through their local CAS Chapter Chair. It is a unique way to have experts come and talk to the local members. Finally, I also want to men- tion the “Advances in Circuits and Systems” e-messages that quarterly inform our members about new evolutions in the area of circuits and systems. The ExCom has also approved a new mentoring pro- gram where young professionals, who are a CAS member, can ask mentoring and coaching advice about their pro- fessional career to senior CAS Fellows. This program is now starting to be implemented. A strategic initiative is the workshop “Future Direc- tions in CAS: A Day of Brainstorming” that will be organ- ized the day after ISCAS 2005 in Kobe, Japan. The idea is to have a full day of brainstorming to define the strategic future directions for CAS. Members are invited to partici- pate to this workshop and to discuss and interact with a group of experts who have been invited to share their view on emerging technical areas with the attendees. The technical report from this workshop will be published towards the end of the year. The CAS Society is also involved in discussions at IEEE level about the formation of several new IEEE Coun- cils that combine efforts in or that further develop areas that cross different existing Societies or (emerging) tech- nical fields. The Council on Electronic Design Automa- tion (C-EDA), if getting final approval in June, will serve as the focal point for the EDA activities within IEEE. It will group existing EDA activities from different Societies and it will develop new EDA initiatives. CAS has always been very active in the EDA field (e.g., as one of the core spon- sors of the Design Automation Conference). The Board of Governors of the CAS Society has voted for CAS to become a founding society of the Council on EDA. The idea for CAS is clearly to take a leading role in this Coun- cil and to continue to serve as a home base for members active in EDA activities. A second new Council initiative is the Systems Council that integrates IEEE activities regarding the engineering of systems, from design through production, operation and use, and from simple to complex. Final approval is also expected in June, and CAS is discussing participation to this Council as well. Finally, IEEE has also established committees investigat- ing a new Council in Biotechnology and/or a new Council or Society in Life Sciences. Also in these areas the CAS Society has already many activities going on, with two vibrant Technical Committees and the successful BioCAS workshop that was organized for the first time in Singa- pore in December 2004. Decisions on these Councils are expected later than June. The ExCom has also approved several initiatives to drive CAS membership in selected geographical areas.

2005. The CAS Society is facing many challenges, but at thesame time there are many opportunities in emerging tech-nical fields as well as in emerging geographical areas. Weare trying hard to address these opportunities. Many ofthe initiatives reported below were approved at the CASExecutive Committee (ExCom) meeting which took placeon March 20 in Leuven, Belgium, and are currently in thecourse of being implemented.

Initiatives include programs to develop membership andchapter activities in Regions 1–7 (USA-Canada), China,India, as well as selected regions in former EasternEurope, Asia and Central- and South-America. All theseprograms are now under implementation.

Finally, it is my pleasure to announce that Prof. LeonChua, the father of nonlinear circuit theory, will receivethe 2005 IEEE Gustav Robert Kirchoff Award at ISCAS2005 in Kobe. The award, sponsored by the CAS Society,

recognizes extraordinary contributions to the field ofelectronic circuits.

I encourage all members who have suggestions orideas for new initiatives to contact us, and I invite everyCAS member to actively volunteer in our many activities(Technical Committees, local CAS Chapter activities, con-ferences and workshops, publications, etc.). The CASSociety does not exist without your highly appreciatedvolunteer contributions.
