President’s Report
Dear Shipmates,
I want to thank all of our shipmates who at-
tended the Branch meeting on January 8, to listen to
a presentation given by Edward Chow, Sr., Secretary
-Department of Veterans Affairs, State of Maryland.
He enlightened the shipmates about issues and con-
cerns voiced by veterans in the state. We held the
Past Presidents Dinner on February 12, which was
well attended. We recognized all of our Past Presi-
dents especially those who attended the dinner.
We gave a special presentation of a Flag in honor of
Shipmate Jack Wainio, Past Branch President, to
Lew Bearden, Chairman-Board of Governors. The
flag was flown over the USS Arizona in Honolulu,
HI.
For your information our current Branch
membership is 1,982 as of January 31, 2013. We are
the largest branch in the FRA but we are experienc-
ing a loss in membership each month. We should
strive to continue to recruit new members, and retain
the members currently on our roster. There is one
month remaining in our membership year, which
concludes on March 31, 2013. You are encouraged
to recruit at least one new member and if you have
some spear time, please consider joining the mem-
bership committee. Additional members are needed
to make phone calls to remind members to pay their
dues so we can continue to grow and be a strong
voice to be heard on Capitol Hill. Our Las Vegas
Night event will be held on March 16, which will be
an excellent time to invite guests to participate in this
activity to support our outreach projects. Thank you
for faithful support of Branch 24 projects and pro-
grams.
In Loyalty, Protection and Service
Shipmate Penny Collins, Branch President

UNIT MEETINGS: Katherine Bearden, President 410-255-6620 Regular meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month at 7:35 p.m.
The Board of Directors meetings precede regular meetings at 7:00 p.m.
Chaplain: Linda Masterson (410) 263-3569 Our Unit was well-represented at the Dec. viewing and funeral for Jack Wainio, husband of Unit member Sylvia Wainio. Please inform Linda of any cards sent, visits
paid to hospital patients, or other services that our members conduct.
Americanism: Stacy Fazekas collected and sent cookies, including packs of Girl Scout Cookies donated by Unit members, to soldiers over-seas for the holidays. Other items needed by the troops are phone call-ing cards and baby wipes. Diane Hoover, National President, and hus-band Don observed Pearl Harbor Day in Hawaii and visited with Branch and Unit 46 in Honolulu. Diane also visited the Veteran’s Cemetery in Reno, NV. Brian Porter sent a box of Christmas decorations for the troops overseas. Loretta Jorden presented to a Brownie Troop one of the flags obtained by the Unit from Sen. Barbara Mikulski’s office. The MVA offers a service to veterans: to have the word “Veteran” added to
their driver’s license, just present their DD-214 when renewing.
Welfare: Theresa Smith 410-757-8768 [email protected] Dot-tie Carter, Theresa and Kathy Bearden held the Christmas Bingo party at the nursing home. Our Unit stuffed and donated 25 Salvation Army gift stockings. Christmas cards, scarves and hats, handmade by Aman-da Smith and Mattie Kovac, were delivered to 120 VA Hospital patients. Unit members made personal visits with each patient, and had unex-pected local television coverage. Barb Hrynyshen and Mattie Kovac took a carload of gifts to Sarah’s House and donated food for the Light House Shelter. In Feb. donations of canned goods were collected for the Light House Shelter. Cleaning supplies were collected and donated for VA Hospital patients who are being discharged to independent living to help them set up housekeeping. For Bingo at the Nursing home in Jan., Theresa Smith and Pat Hall visited with patients, and Kathy Bearden brought Raven’s cupcakes as a treat. In March, Theresa will collect
Easter candy for Sarah’s House.
Membership: Sue Hogan asked for assistance in contacting members to renew memberships. A list of Charter members was prepared by Loretta Jorden, so that certificates can be prepared and presented along with 50 year pins at the Unit’s 50th Anniversary Dinner. Other members due to receive pins will be presented with them at a regular meetings. New members must attend an orientation meeting, held the 2nd Wed. of
each month at 7 pm., in order to obtain a parking decal and key card.
Youth Activities: Loretta Jorden (410) 956-6015 Loretta’s Girl Scouts are 9th graders this year, and are Senior Girl Scouts. Their recent activi-ties include baking cookies for the Club’s Children’s Christmas Party, wrapping gifts on Christmas Eve as a Troop fundraiser, handling chil-dren’s games at the LAFRA’s 3rd Annual Chili Cook-Off, and enjoying their annual Mardi Gras celebration. For the Children’s Christmas Party, gifts were wrapped by Dottie Carter, Kathy Bearden and Toni O’Neill. Loretta’s Girl Scouts spent a full day in Ellicott City on their Sisterhood Journey patch. They have begun working toward their gold award. This week they are conducting a Brownie Troop meeting during which Emily,
our sponsored Scout, will receive her silver award.

Unit members Loretta Jorden, Anne Tydings, Amanda Smith, Theresa Smith, Diane Hoover, Toni O’Neill and Sylvia Wainio attended the Mid-Year Meeting from Jan 17-20 in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Irene Romero chaired the Unit’s 3rd annual Chili Cook-Off held on 2/16/13, with Eimi-le Jorden conducting the auction. The event provided a fun break for families on a chilly Feb. day.
