PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Shipmates,

In the past two months, we had guest

speakers running for National FRA positions.

I attended the quarterly meeting of the

Central Liaison Committee at Pax River with Ship-

mates East Coast President Don Hoover, Past Re-

gional President East Coast (PRPEC) Claire Purdy,

Valerie Reed, and Penny Collins. PRPEC Purdy

installed S/M Collins as Chairman of the CLC.

In addition, I attended the Annapolis

sides of Fawcett’s including the city’s parking area

closest to the FRC. It is highly contested by many

businesses in and around the downtown area as

well as residents of the city.

The FRC stands with the “Save Annapo-

lis” coalition of many interested businesses, resi-

dents, and Historical Annapolis.

City counsel decisions on these vital is-

sues are coming in September and members are

asked to oppose the Master City Dock Plan and the

new Zoning Ordinance.

>>> See saveannapolis.org for particulars <<<.

Chairman of the FRC Board of Gover-

nors, Lew Bearden, competently testified on both

the Master Plan and The New Zoning.

Nine Delegates from Branch 24 attended

the FRA East Coast Regional Convention. Our

Branch won 1st place awards for the reports on

Hospital, Welfare, and Rehabilitation; American

Armor and Old Navy, so remember to inquire when making purchases.

Welfare: A Welfare chairperson still is needed. Duties include prepar-ing and delivering holiday food baskets, and collecting and distributing donated items. Instead of just one person, a committee of 2 or 3 peo-ple could help share the duties, and Theresa Smith will provide guid-ance. In addition to the Unit’s standard service projects, the chairper-son(s) may begin any new service projects that they choose. For the second year in a row, Theresa made 90 bow ties for Melwood resi-dents to wear during their special event. Barb Hrynyshen volunteered to contact Charlotte Hall to see if they need any items for residents. Previously collected school supplies totaling 657 items were recently

given to Sarah’s House.

80 hours. Mattie Kovac brought 2 flags for donation to Scout troops.

VAVS: Theresa attended a short meeting on June 18 at the volunteer section on the 6th floor of the VA Hospital. For the upcoming year, in honor of Ken Carter, she is collecting and donating coffee, tea, sugar, sweeteners and creamer to the Veteran’s Center in West Annapolis. She plans to attend a 5-hour recertification session, which she is re-

quired to do each year as VAVS representative.

Dear Unit 24 Members,

Unit 24 earned all first place Awards at July’s East Coast Regional Mid-Year Convention for our com-mittee reports and the Unit report, also received the Else B. Cooley Award for Outstanding Welfare and the Evelyn & Ken Harris Award for Americanism and Patri-otism. I want to thank Unit 24 for all of their dedica-tion, commitment, and effort to promote and assist in welfare, social and patriotic works of the LAFRA to re-ceive these awards. This accomplishment is certainly a joint effort by all.

Our Las Vegas night is Saturday November 2nd, Theresa Smith is our chairperson, let her know how you would like to help. We also need a Welfare Chairper-son!! The chairperson decides what projects they would like to work on, can beyour favorite charities, it is your choice.

Hope to see all at the FRA Picnic on September 21st. Also, the FRC will need volunteers to work during the boat show. The signup sheet is on the board or con-tact Keith Henderson.

Four of our own members will be installed as East Coast Regional Officers during the National Conven-tion in Chattanooga, TN., Toni O’Neil, President, Theresa Smith, Vice President, Amanda Smith, Treasurer, and Cathleen Erickson as Secretary, Unit 24 is well repre-sented.

Diane Hoover, National President of the LAFRA, has worked very hard during her term in promoting the best interest of our Auxiliary and her National Project – American Vet Dogs. She has traveled to many states, including Hawaii, by plane and car, (not sure about trains) visiting with her long time LAFRA friends and making many new ones. Diane has worked very hard during her term in office, her term has ended, but not her commitment to the LAFRA, after the Convention, she will be the Jr. Past President of National. With the help and encouragement of her husband Don and fami-ly, she has accomplished much good work.

In Loyalty, Protection and Service,

Katherine Bearden, President LAFRA Unit 24
