PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Welcome to the first electronic version of the Tip! BY KATHY MCHUGH Amazingly, only a very few you asked to continue to receive it in paper form. Please bear with us as we experiment with the best way to format and deliver it, and let us know what you think. We believe that it has the potential to offer you a great deal more than paper form, but we need to learn how to realize that potential. It’s a work in progress. If you missed the chance to ask for it in paper form, you can make that happen by writing me at president@ neda.org or at 64 Pearl Street in Charlestown, MA 02129. Finally . . . Summer and the show season are upon us. I don’t know about you but I lost a LOT of flowers, plants and shrubs to winter kill this year, and it nearly killed me too. I have no doubt it was hard on your horses too, and a very slow start getting them back into shape with a spring that was no less forgiving June 2014 than the winter. But all that is behind us now, the sun is shining as I write, and I’m told that la Nina will bring us a sweltering summer. I say “bring it on!” . . . Famous last words. Our members have been asking us for years to bring back a summer show, and, finally, we have identified a great team to make this a reality. Veteran show secretary Sue McKeown will be working with new manager Helen Cast and Twisdenwood Farm for a one-day show on July 13. Entries close on July 1. It’s a beautiful facility and a great new opportunity to show off what you’re working on. Longtime NEDA board members and Fall Show manager remembers the genesis of the summer show back in the late 1970’s as a show for the novice rider – a What- U-Canner, for riders to do What You Can – as an alternative to the larger recognized shows that were all that was available at the time. Her idea was sparked, as she was riding an off-the-track CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 Lendon Gray on horse Beth Jenkins

Welcome to the first electronic version of the Tip!By Kathy Mchugh

Amazingly, only a very few you asked to continue to receive it in paper form. Please bear with us as we experiment with the best way to format and deliver it, and let us know what you think. We believe that it has the potential to offer you a great deal more than paper form, but we need to learn how to realize that potential. It’s a work in progress. If you missed the chance to ask for it in paper form, you can make that happen by writing me at [email protected] or at 64 Pearl Street in Charlestown, MA 02129.

Finally . . . Summer and the show season are upon us. I don’t know about you but I lost a LOT of flowers, plants and shrubs to winter kill this year, and it nearly killed me too. I have no doubt it was hard on your horses too, and a very slow start getting them back into shape with a spring that was no less forgiving

than the winter.

Longtime NEDA board members and Fall Show manager remembers the genesis of the summer show back in the late 1970’s as a show for the novice rider – a What-U-Canner, for riders to do What You Can – as an alternative to the larger recognized shows that were all that was available at the time. Speaking of requests for return engagements, our incredibly popular symposium with Ingrid Klimke some years ago prompted many to request a return visit, and we are delighted to report that we will be hosting Ingrid and Veterinarian Dr. Ina Goesmeier for a two-day clinic at Apple Knoll Farm in Millis on November 1 and 2. Klimke rarely travels for clinics, so this is a unique opportunity to benefit from her deep knowledge of

Standardbred and wanted a show for people like her. She started as show secretary with a friend as manager, in a big open field in Medfield, where EVERYTHING had to be brought in, from porta-potties to rings and bleachers. She enlisted her teenage children and Sally Swift to help (before she became a national figure). The first show consisted of three rings and a tent, expanding quickly to five rings and about 300 entries as a popular event in the Boston area. She recalls “Every year we gave out a nice prize (like a hand crafted tack box) as a Mystery Award, which changed from year to year. One year it was for the neatest entry. Another year it was for the competing horse with the longest tail. We decorated the port a potties with nice flowers. And we fed the volunteers a yummy hot crab casserole for lunch, topped off with strawberry shortcake from the local Sunshine Farm. I remember competitors sneaking into the volunteer lunch to partake of the crab casserole.” When Beth moved over to manage the Fall Show in 1990, Angela Prenosil and Ann Villani took over the summer show and moved it to Stoneleigh Burnham School where it stayed and continued until the early 2000’s when Ann Villani fell ill and died. Without a management team, the show could not go on. We’ve been looking for the right combination ever since and are thrilled that we have found it in Helen Cast and Sue McKeown.

classical dressage riding and training techniques for all horses. Her symposium was a runaway success when she was last here, so stay tuned to the NEDA website for full details as they unfold. Dr. Goesmeier will be lecturing about her renowned combinations of traditional and alternative treatment methods for the best possible outcomes for horses of all ages in all disciplines.

I wish all a great summer of competition, learning, making progress towards your equestrian goals, and simply enjoying the outdoors and the company of your horses and barn mates!

Spring is here! I sure hope so!Our first shows in Region 8 have occurred and while I think the weather slowed down ‘us’ riders who remained up here in the great north, a few of you took the chance to get out there. Since May shows are now basically closed, there are only 2.5 months left to qualify for the regional championships. Scary!

Remember the US Dressage Finals is for each Open and Adult Amateur Champion and Reserve Champion at the Regional Championships. They will be invited to Lexington, KY to compete head to head with the other regional champions. Last year Region 8 did very well and I am

hoping for a big successful showing from Region 8 again. Information and Prize list will be up shortly on the USDF site. Remember there is no harm in declaring now for the finals even if you are not qualified yet!

Our Region 8 website is up and looking good. PLEASE if you have any pictures to contribute, forward them to Kevin England, [email protected]. We would love to rotate photos. Also if you have anything that you would like to contribute, news, special events, etc, please forward the info to him also. This is your site so we want you to use it and find info you need.

Reminders! Our regional Meeting will be October 25th at the Amherst Brewing Company in Amherst, MA at 11:30. Our last meeting was very productive and it is open to all USDF members…

USDF Convention is in Cambridge, MA this year on December 4-6. It is the first time for this event to be in our region. Please try to come as it is very educational and fun.

See you on the Centerline…

NEDA Summer Show Charity EventCome participate... let’s make this an annual charity event: either join in with your horse & dance off (show your moves to impromptu music medley, selection chosen by NEDA’s very own Paul Eason) to an audience vote off! (like musical chairs!)

When the music stops, audience votes (by holding up paddles which they purchase in advance)... until we are left with a winner & runner up! OR participate in the audience, purchase paddles with the $$ going towards the charity. If you haven’t had a chance to ride a freestyle this is it!

International Level Competitor, Professional Rider/Trainer, Serious Amateur, Young Rider, and Breeding.

As part of NEDA’s mission to “promote and support the art of dressage,” scholarships are made available to members who wish to pursue their training. As a recipient, you will be asked to give back to the dressage community in various ways such as: Keeping a journal of your experiences; fund-raising; being available for publicity or

Ingrid Klimke demonstrates: Training The Classical Way through Fitness

and Gymnastic Exercises. – and –

Dr. Ina Gösmeier presents: Natural therapies to support the health and

improve the rideability of the horse.

The New England Dressage Association Fall Symposium will be held November 1 & 2, 2014 at Apple Knoll in Millis, MA. The Symposium will be facilitated by Ingrid Klimke and Dr. Ina Gösmeier over the two days. The topics as stated in the heading promise to be interesting as well as educational. Cavaletti work will be demonstrated as a tool in the

training of the dressage horse. Enjoying the classical training process and keeping it fun for horse as well as rider will also be a focus.

Dr. Gösmeier will be lecturing and presenting practical applications of her topic with live demonstrations. Her

utilization of chiropractic, acupuncture and herbal methods in addition to standard veterinary care generate wonderful discussions. These rarely available lectures are wildly popular and not to be missed.

There will also be DVD’s and books authored by Ingrid Klimke available for sale as well as a book signing session. We are also hopeful there will be a publication by Dr. Gösmeier available for sale.

NEDA is still working to reserve a block of rooms at the Hampton Inn and the Crown Plaza in Natick. We will be announcing the date range to make reservations and code for those rooms as soon as they have been finalized.

It cannot be stressed enough how rare this opportunity is. Ingrid Klimke and Dr. Gösmeier do not come to this country often so take advantage of it. Please keep checking www.neda.org, the NEDA Facebook Page and NEDA publications for updates and details such as hotel information, auditor signup and criteria for rider selection. We will also be seeking volunteers to help with this symposium so please think about what contribution you may be able to give to help make this a successful event. See you there!!!

New England Breed Show SeriesBy Patty guarino

NEDA is proud to offer many opportunities for Region 8 breeders to showcase their young horses with the New England Breed Show Series. There are more shows added this year throughout the Region 8 territory in which there is sure to be a convenient venue to accommodate more sport horse breeders than ever!

To support the newly added shows in the Series, NEDA is offering a Late Stallion Auction starting May 17. Between May 17 and 31, check out the stallion auction, where proven stallion breeding fees are sold at a reduced rate. The monies collected from the NEDA Stallion auction is generously donated by the breeders to the NEDA Breed Shows and goes out as awards to the winners. Please support this wonderful cause and check out the stallions available at www.nedastallionauction.org.

The importance of getting young horses into a show ring is a great experience for them. It builds their exposure to various situations and also adds to their value as sale horses. Scores at breed shows prove significant to potential buyers and breeder owners. People looking to buy horses will be confident in their purchase when their future dressage partner has been off the farm, away from their herd, and has been comfortable in the show ring.

In order to qualify for NEDA and USDF year end regional awards, a horse has to have three separate scores from three separate judges. This means they need to participate in three shows. Many of the show venues this year have two separate shows and judges, so it is possible to obtain two separate scores by attending only one location.

Come bring your young horse to show off in hand or under saddle group classes and materials. An excellent way to get them out for their first shows. Prize lists and contacts at www.neda.org

NEDA is pleased to offer an opportunity for competitors to qualify for the NEDA $2100 Sport Horse Sweepstakes. By attending a show offering the Sweepstakes, competitors pay $50 to participate. Each show has its own Sweepstakes, and distributes cash prizes at that show. The more horses entered at each show, the bigger the prize money will be. By participating in the Sweepstakes, a horse is automatically entered in the Final Sweepstakes at NEDA Fall Festival, at no charge. There are some rules, such as the horse has to be a competitor at the Fall Festival to be considered to win. He also has to be present to win. A horse may enter the Sweepstakes at each of the Series Shows, but only one Sweepstakes entry is necessary to qualify for the Final Sweepstakes at the NEDA Fall Festival. There is no opportunity to enter the Sweepstakes at the NEDA Fall Festival. A Sweepstakes prize of $2100 will be awarded at the Wine & Cheese party Thursday night of the NEDA Fall Festival. Thanks to Hof Mendenhol for sponsoring this party that is free and open to all.

This year, NEDA Fall Festival Breed Show and Series Championships will be celebrating their 10th year at the Fall Festival in Saugerties! The Breed Show will be held on Thursday and Friday. NEDA Sport Horse Committee is especially excited about all the prizes to be awarded! There will be more than $11,150 in prize money awarded to breeders and owners. The cash awards go to NEDA Breeders’ Futurity, Born in America and the NEDA Breeders Sweepstakes

winners. Last year those winners received $5400, $2400 and $2100 respectively. Great prizes like saddle pads add to the excitement.

There are two new sponsored prizes added to the NEDA Fall Festival Breed Show. On Friday afternoon, there will be Handler Awards. The traditional Breed Show Amateur Handler class will be divided into two divisions this year: Class 63A for Amateur and Junior/Young Rider Handlers and 63B for Open Handlers. The prizes are Ovation helmets that will be presented to each winner. Many thanks to Ten Brock Farm for sponsoring these classes and awards! The second prizes are cash awards for the Three year old Prospect Award. This is for three year old horses which enter into the Age Class on Thursday and the Material Class on Friday. The highest average score (both fillies and colts) will be awarded $200 Champion and $300 Reserve Champion prizes.

The new, safer venue at the Fall Festival makes it fun to show inexperienced horses. The positive changes include stabling closer to the show ring. Stabling allows horses to return to their stalls between showing and award ceremonies. There is a separate warm up ring, and the route to get there is short and quiet. The breed show takes center stage at Saugerties at the ring adjacent to the food pavilion. Since the Breed Show is centrally located, the atmosphere is exciting for spectators and offers increased exposure for breeders and owners. Thursday night will include the Wine and Cheese party which accompanies the Award Ceremonies, including the Sweepstakes! It is a great way to spend an evening!

NEDA Benefits of MembershipSpring has finally sprung in New England and just as soon as the rivers stop washing away our paddocks and rings we can earnestly think about a summer of riding, competing and learning. What a wonderful time to share the benefits of NEDA with our friends, barn mates, tack shops, feed stores, farriers, saddle fitters, vets, and local pony clubs. NEDA has something for everyone, even if not an active dressage competitor.

This edition of the TIP includes a centerfield flyer for you to share. Pull it out, hang it up, pass it on!

NEDA Membership offers great benefits and discounts to educational

But more importantly NEDA members have access to the largest association of like-minded dressage riders in the USA. The NEDA website offers a vehicle for buying and selling, for sharing tips, for finding people, and for knowing where to go to learn and compete. The benefits for networking, learning, supporting and celebrating are unsurpassed for active competitors as well as casual weekend riders.

So, do your friends and fellow riders a favor – tell them about NEDA!
