President’s Message
Y es, I’ll admit it. I get confused every year. Are we experiencing six more
weeks of winter or an early spring? I guess it doesn’t matter, because
spring always arrives and there are many enjoyable Liederkranz events
planned for March and April. On Sunday afternoon, March 8 we have Cabbage
Hill Day, an event that honors our club’s heritage and Lancaster City roots.
There will be a traditional meal of Pork and Sauerkraut, music and entertainment by each of the cultural groups.
The Bockbier Fest will be held on the March 14. Come out for a night of food, music and special selection of
Bock Biers. Ein Abend in Wein on April 18, is the most formal of our Club’s events, as it is meant to emulate the
grand balls of imperial Vienna.
Trivia is always held on the second and fourth Thursday each month. Saturday German Movie nights will be
held on March 21 and April 25. What’s showing can be found on page 7.
In addition to the events already mentioned, the Alpenländers perform for the First Friday on March 6 and The
Buskers are there for the next First Friday on April 3. On St. Patty’s Day Mike Luckenbill takes us to the Emerald
Isle with singing and bagpipes. There will be Irish Stout on tap, so make sure you stop by the Club and hoist a
pint for Irish Luck on the 17th. March ends with Kompass Rose performing on March 27.
A special event that is held each year for the kinder is the Easter Egg hunt. It is on Saturday, April 11 and starts
at 10 a.m. Paxton Beck and her crew do an outstanding job with this event. It’s worth coming out just to watch
these kids be kids for the few years that they are kids.
Where is the only place to get Parrot wings and Parrot Fest tickets? Of course, at the Liederkranz. On Sunday,
April 19 select your seats, munch on wings and think about the hot time you’ll have in July. This year, non-
members can also purchase tickets on this date. If you know of non-members who come to Parrot Fest, encour-
age them to stop by on the 19th and get their tickets. The ticket office opens at one o’clock for members and three
o’clock for non-members.
There are a brunch of great reasons to get to the Club on Sunday, April 26. Beer, Bloody Marys and Breakfast!
The Chorus is again holding their annual brunch. Come out to support the Chorus; at only $10, you’ll have plenty
left for a beverage. See page 9 for more information.
April 26 is also the day to sign up for helping at the upcoming Fests. As everyone knows, the Liederkranz would-
n’t be the same without the festivals that are held each year and these events couldn’t be done without the count-
less hours of volunteer time by members. This is how you meet new friends and get the most out of being part of
the Club. Sign-up goes from noon until 2 p.m. (Con’t on Page 2)
GOOD FUN, GREAT FOOD, AND GEMÜTLICHKEIT AT THE LIEDERKRANZ!

Page 2
(Con’t from Page 1) There’s another important thing that happens each April. April is the month for nomina-
tions for the elected positions within our club. Each Officer and six Trustee positions are up for election every
year. If you think you’d like to run for one of these spots, see one of the members of the nominating committee,
Peter Knapp, Paul Stanavage, or Joe Eckenrode.
Don’t forget to mark these dates in your calendar. The Sommerfest is on June 12 & 13, and then the Lieder-
kranz 140th celebrations will be held on June 19 & 20 and July 4. Two weekends of Gemütlichkeit in June and
then more on the day our Club is 140 years old.
Lastly, I’d like to send a warm welcome to the new members that are joining this year. On behalf of the officers
and trustees, we’re pleased that you’ve made the decision to join the Liederkranz. To make the most of your
new membership, now is the time for the next step. Get involved! I’m looking forward to seeing everyone
around the Club.
Glenn Yanos, Club President
Reservation and Dining Information: - Dining - Reserved tables are permitted in the Ballroom area. Bar & Stammtisch seating is first come. To better prepare our service & kitchen staff, we welcome all dining notice via our on-line TableAgent site found on the din-ing page of the website and in weekly emails. This is especially important for groups larger than 8 people. Occa-sionally we will use SignUp Genius for special event reservations. We prefer use of these on-line sites over phone calls.
- Volunteers - Please remember your servers and bartenders are volunteers of the Club and are not paid com-pensation for their work—please support them! - First Thursday Meetings - non-members must exit the Ballroom at the start of the monthly member meeting.
MEMBERSHIP CARD POLICY - As a member, it is your responsibility to validate your membership upon
entrance to the club either to the Door Attendant or the Bartender on duty - even if you may be a long time
member. This practice, along with signing-in of nonmembers is not meant to be an annoyance to you, but are
requirements by the PA Liquor Control Board who govern our private club status. Please be prepared to offer
your membership card each time you enter whether or not you feel the door attendant or bartender should
know you. Our growing membership makes this practice even more important. Guests should show a valid
driver's license or state id when signing in.

Alpenrose Schuhplattler / Kindergruppe Report
As we jump into spring I would like to introduce myself; the newly elected president of the
Alpenrose Schuplattler Verine. As many of you know I have grown up not only in the Liederkranz
but in the Schuplattler group as well. Being a third-generation member of the Liederkranz and
dancing since I could walk it gives me great pleasure to hold the role as president. As one of my
first responsibilities I have the honor of thanking the Club and all those who supported our An-
nual Spaghetti Dinner -- making it as always, a huge success!
As the weather gets warmer our schedule warms up as well. This year we will be hosting
the annual Mid-Atlantic Jugendeinzel u. Heimatabend on March 7. This event gives the younger
members of our group the opportunity to practice their skill in a traditional, single couple compe-
tition, style dance. We will be welcoming groups from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region to par-
ticipate and we will continue the celebrate our comradery at the Heimatabend immediately following. Club members are
encouraged to attend this event and support the youth of the club on March 7 starting at 10am, all-day tickets which in-
clude a continental breakfast and warm lunch will be $20, and half-day tickets including lunch are $12. We are also again
hosting Bock Bier Fest on March 14. This event will feature our friends the Auerhahn Schuplattlers and Heidi and the Hei-
matecho Band.
As always, we encourage all new members to come celebrate our German culture through dance. Adult practice is
held every Monday starting at 7:30 and Kinder practice every second and fourth Monday of the month starting at 6:30.

Greetings to you all. By this time, the various local ground-
hogs have made their predictions and our own Liederkranz
Ludwig was indecisive and said possibly we will have an early
Spring, but we will also have a blizzard! And I don’t think he
meant the one you buy at Dairy Queen! I want to thank the
chorus members who helped decorate for the Fasching
Dance on February 8th and also participated during the eve-
nings festivities.
Our chorus director, Barry Sawyer, has been working enthusi-
astically and very diligently with our group since the new se-
mester began January 15th and is preparing us for our up-
coming busy Spring season of performances. And as always, we are looking for new members to join our chorus. With so many
new members being inducted into our club, we hope some of you will consider com-
ing to a rehearsal on Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm and giving us a try. It’s a great
way to get to know other club members, sing wonderful German songs and just have
a good time!
The LLK chorus will be performing at the Evening of Song at the Cannstatter Volks-
fest in Philadelphia on Sunday, March 1st at 4:00 pm where combined choruses will
sing two pieces to conclude the concert. On Sunday, March 8th, we will be singing at
Cabbage Hill Day, as all performing groups participate during the afternoon. And
again, on March 22nd, the chorus will perform during German Student Day. It’s truly
a busy month for us, but a joy to share our German folk music with all in attendance.
The chorus will once again sponsor the annual club breakfast on Sunday, April 26th
from 11:00am-1:00 pm. It is the same day as the Volunteer Sign Up day, so you can
support the chorus by eating a hearty breakfast and then signing up to volunteer at
the many events! Tickets, which are $10.00, will be available that day at the club and
reservations should be made ahead of time on sign up genius. And the chorus cook-
books will be available to purchase!!
Our own Spring Concert will be Saturday, May 2nd at 5:00pm at the Zion Lutheran
Church in Landisville. The club will be celebrating our 140th anniversary this year and
as a special event, the chorus is going to host a singing fest on Saturday, June 20th
at 3:00 pm when other local German choruses will be joining us at the pavilion. It will
be a wonderful afternoon of German folk music! Mark your calendars now and more
information will be in the May/June newsletter.
We hope to see many of you in the audience throughout this Spring to support all the
hard work and dedication to our German Heritage and music that is the “heart” of the
Liederkranz Club.....the Chorus
Happy Spring!
Linda Husler Chorus President
TrusTees’ reporT
W ho said that things slow down in the winter? Your Trustees have led the Lieder-
kranz through some very nice upgrades during these cold and nasty months. We
decided to close the club for a few days in February to make some changes that required
minimal traffic. Included is our new flooring in the entryway, barroom and Stammtisch. It
really looks great and should hold up for years to come. At the same time we had the bar
top sanded down and refinished. Our contractors did a very professional job at reasonable
prices. Many thanks go out to the volunteers who helped move out the furniture, glassware,
liquor, pictures, etc. and then move everything back in after a thorough cleaning. These
projects were fully financed by your Small Games of Chance proceeds (all from the pull tabs
games and fest raffles) – keep playing and good luck! We also have plans to spruce up the barroom ladies’ and men’s rooms. If you are going to miss the wallpaper in the ladies’
room, we could save you a piece or two. Our old plumbing system does not include a grease trap to deal with the kitchen’s
excess slime. Hopefully we’ll have this remedied before the next newsletter. The trustees carry out many improvement projects throughout the year. From repairing doors, to installing lighting, fixing
faucets and much more, the projects are done by the trustees with the help and expertise of our club members. Some pro-
jects take a team and this is where we need you. The Spring Work Day is in the final days of scheduling. On April 25
th (tentatively) we will fix and clean up areas in the club
house as well as power wash the decks and pavilion. The pavilion roof could also use some work to re-screw it down in
order to stop the many leaks. If you can wipe down a surface, push a broom or use a battery powered screwdriver on a
roof, we need you to help. Many of you know that we have moved from the white PVC picnic tables to traditional German fest tables and benches.
We’ve purchased many used tables and benches at very reasonable prices. However, some of this equipment could use
rehabbing and a little TLC. In order to do this we will need to set up a “Production Line” fix-it program. Volunteers will be
needed.
Watch for more details and a Signup Genius as we get closer to the project dates.

Liederkranz German Language Scholarship Program
$1000 scholarships will be awarded to graduating high school seniors in Lancaster County and surrounding areas who plan to continue their study of German language in college. Judy Zodet, Chairperson of the Scholarship Fund, by Friday, April 17, 2020. Letters of recommendation from two teachers must accompany the returned application. In addi-tion, the Liederkranz Scholarship Committee will interview scholarship semi-finalists. Applications and further information can be found on the Grants/Scholarship page of the club’s website: LancasterLiederkranz.com. Or, contact Judy Zodet at [email protected].

22, from 11-2. Guests should be 70 years or older. If you have reached this golden age and want to be included

Herzlich Willkommen 2020 and all the fun we will enjoy!
T he month of Love has been good for the Alleweil Jung. We love the club, love to
dance and love each other. We have welcomed two new members this month.
The fun continues to magnify. We performed at St. John Herr Estates, they seemed to
love us and we are planning to go back. The Schnee Ball was a success. The atten-
dance was excellent and we all remembered Doris Blouin one of the Alleweil Jung foun-
ders. She was instrumental at getting this dance on the calendar and quite fitting it was
the last dance she could attend before her passing. We all love Doris and the legacy
she has left for us. We took home top prize at Fasching and looking forward to Lumpen Ball. March looks busy
too with Performances scheduled for Cabbage Hill Day and German Student Day. Love for dance is all around
us.
Come join the fun! Tanze , Liebe, Lache,

The mens’ Hobby Chor is preparing to sing in March and April at various venues where
we will gather with other German cultural groups. The March 1 Evening of Song at the
Cannstatter in Philadelphia, and Reading’s spring concert on April 19, are emerging
events, along with an annual get-together (Fersommling) on April 24 of folk near Lykens
where the Pennsylvania Deitsch is often heard. Along with these activities come a cou-
ple of others in March, namely Cabbage Hill and German Student days here at the club,
and we’ll of course be singing then as well. Mit Begeisterung!
We’ll look for you in the audience at fests, abends, and concerts. Aufwiederschau’n!

The following letter was received from Christian Schmitt, son of members Tim
and Tracy Schmitt. Christian received his first educational award from the
Club’s Scholarship Fund and his second award from the Grant Fund. These
funds are supported by you as a member of this fine Club when you purchase
from our annual Christmas cookie and candy Easter egg sales and also by indi-
vidual member donations. We thank you for your support. Scholarships are
also funded by Small Games of Chance and Hobby Chor donations.
- Judy Zodet
To everyone at the Lancaster Liederkranz, As a two-time recipient of the German Language College Scholarship, it is a joy
to write a word of thanks to everyone who supports the scholarship fund. My
first award helped finance my undergraduate education at Middlebury College.
My German skills blossomed at Middlebury, especially as a result of living in
the German House and acting with the German Theater Group. During my
year abroad in Mainz, I had learned enough German to complete an internship
with the Deutsche Börse Group, which led me to the topic of my senior thesis.
All of these experiences were incredibly formative for me. My second award is for my graduate degree in theology at Gordon-Conwell
Theological Seminary. Having a German background gives me access to
many theological sources and books that don’t exist in an English translation.
Many of my research interests also center on Post-Reformation Germany. Be-
yond the alleviation of financial strain, it has been a blessing over the past sev-
eral years to know that I am supported by people who have faith in my ability to
succeed in my studies and beyond. So I thank you for your support, and know
that the many other scholarship recipients are equally encouraged to have peo-
ple who believe in them. Mit lieben Grüßen aus Massachussetts, Christian Schmitt
