ello Chapter Members! Happy Spring. There are only a few months left for the 2017‐2018 chapter year. I hope that

you have enjoyed our dinner meeting and webinar topics. And that you enjoyed our 75th Anniversary Gala where Mike

Duggan (Mayor, City of Detroit) and Richard Baird (Michigan Transformation Manager & Senior Advisor to the Governor)

were our special guests. There is a summary of our 75th Anniversary included in this newsletter. Kudos to our hard working

Board for their invested time and energy with the 75th Anniversary Gala!

As we continue celebrating 75 years, we thank you for your continued support. Our chapter members and volunteers play a

vital role in what we do. Without you, we could not successfully promote the profession; volunteer with Junior

Achievement; offer scholarships and our annual Student Night to future professionals.  Our chapter supported The IIA

Research Foundation with a $7,500 donation as well as a $7,500 donation to the Michigan Education Excellence Foundation

during our Anniversary Gala. We have also supported Junior Achievement and University and College Accounting

Departments. Our members are speaking to college students about the profession. We continue to be recognized as a

Chapter of Excellence by The IIA.

I have been a member of The IIA and the Detroit Chapter for 13 years and a Board member for four years. My membership

is valuable to me because it allows me to network with others locally and globally. It has opened doors to various volunteer

opportunities that allow me to give back to the profession.  I encourage you go continue supporting our chapter by

attending dinner meetings, trainings, and webinars. Also, encourage others to join The IIA and our Detroit Chapter. We all

play an integral role in meeting our chapter needs.

We hope to see you at an upcoming dinner meeting (April 10th – Student Night ~ The Millennial Workforce and Strategies

for Success Panel; and May 8th‐Annual Federal and State Economic Update).  Again, thank you for support!

Over the years, our chapter has established and maintained a relationship with Junior Achievement of

Southeastern Michigan whose purpose is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global

economy. JA teaches children financial literacy, career readiness, and fostering the entrepreneurial spirit. In

the past, we have volunteered with JA to teach students the importance of budgeting money. On February

8th, in honor of our 75th Anniversary, our chapter volunteered with JA's Journey to Jobs event, which about

600 high school students learned about career possibilities from more than 20 organizations ranging from

small businesses to some of the largest corporations in Detroit. Our 20 volunteers guided groups of

students to the company displays and even connected and spoke with the students about their companies

and the internal audit profession. Today's students represent tomorrow’s professionals and our chapter is

happy to be a part of investing in and educating today's students.

We had the opportunity to discuss the importance of earning a certification with Karen Harreld (Corporate Auditor, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan) who is a new CIA. Karen was recognized at the October 2017 IIA Detroit Chapter Dinner Meeting for earning her CIA.

What is your current role and employer?Senior Corporate Auditor, Blue Cross Blue Shield

What made you have an interest in earning your certification?I have always had an interest in earning my CIA designation, however, finding the time to study and prepare was a challenge. After joining BCBSM in 2015, I really saw the impact and value certifications have across the enterprise. I made the conscious decision to apply for the certification and made it a priority.

Would you encourage others to earn a certification? If so, why?Absolutely, the CIA designation is the only globally accepted designation for internal auditors and the standard by which individuals demonstrate their professionalism in internal auditing. Earning the CIA designation is a great way for audit professionals to communicate to the world that they are prepared to meet today’s challenges.

Thoughts from a New CIA!

What tips would you share with those preparing for the CIA exam? Map out a plan for success. The IIA’s CIA exam prep offers a nice study guide to assist. Try to allocate a small amount of time over several days in a week versus just the weekend. I used my lunch hour a couple times

a week to read material or practice exam questions Find a study group to practice with. Facebook has a group called “Pass the CIA Exam” where members discuss and share study

tips and questions. What do you like to do for fun?I enjoy practicing yoga. I have noticed the benefits of both the physical strength it creates and the mental stress relieving aspects ofthe practice. Yoga has taught me that no matter the situation you are in, if you can control your breath, you will be just fine.

CHAPTER ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM (CAP) The CAP recognizes chapter activities that align with The IIA North American Strategic Plan. Chapters earn points from providingservice to members and the profession. The program also provides a means to evaluate chapter success based on minimum standards set by The IIA. Help our chapter earn CAP points by letting us know about your recent internal audit articles, speaking engagements, presentations, participation in Junior Achievement, or interns hired. Share details (date, duration, etc.) with Matthew Pear (CAP Committee Chair) at [email protected]

On February 15, 2018, The IIA Detroit Chapter hosted its 75th Anniversary Gala at the Detroit Historical Museum.  120 guests attended,

representing a diverse group of professionals as well as university students in our region.  Our keynote speakers were Mayor Mike

Duggan and Mr. Richard Baird, Transformation Manager for the State of Michigan, who spoke about all of the fantastic transformation

activities, development and growth in Detroit and in Michigan.  In addition, we presented a $7,500 donation to the Michigan Education

Excellence Foundation, and we highlighted our support of Junior Achievement through the years.  We also spoke about our history and

acknowledged our past Presidents as well as our oldest and newest members.  After the presentations, we enjoyed a strolling dinner in

the “Streets of Old Detroit”.  It was truly a wonderful celebration of our history. We look forward to continuing our mission of promoting

the internal audit profession, ethical standards, continued education, and community service – quite simply, to be agents of positive

change in our organizations, in our region, and in the world!

Special thanks to our presenters and to everyone who helped make the event a great success!
