April 2017, Issue #134 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Hello everyone. Mother Nature again pulled a fast one on us at our last meeting. Hopefully we are done with the snow and will be embracing spring with a successful meeting on April 11. We will be receiving Philip Craig at a later time; we will keep everyone posted. On another note, we have fantastic news for all our members. I am pleased to announce that Deserres will be sponsoring our association. They have donated beautiful prizes for our raffles for our next two meetings. Also they will be giving all our members a 10% discount on regular price items when OAA members shop at their stores and present their OAA membership card. We will eventually have a loyalty plan with them once everything is settled. So a big thank you to DeSerres at St-Laurent and head office. I also would like to congratulate all our members who sold an artwork during our last play period and would like to apologize for not having the sales report at hand on the day of exchange. Everything has been fixed with OLT and they will be a bit more punctual next time with their report. Just a reminder that soon we will be having our Spring Awards Night and I will need to count on volunteers to help make the evening run as smoothly as possible. If you can help with any of the tasks listed below please send me a quick email and I will pencil you in! I will be looking for high school students that can assist with the evening, they can claim the time for their school volunteer hours. If any members have young teenagers who need to collect some volunteer work hours please send them our way. Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society in the Ottawa Valley-

CPAWS-OV area will be hosting our first annual Art Camp in the Dumoine River area from August 2-7, 2017.

The Art Camp will bring together artists working in different mediums and from communities across the Outaouais region. We will explore the Dumoine River, create works of art, share stories, and become inspired by this magnificent landscape. Next winter, we will hold two art shows to display the works derived from this art camp. One show will be located in the Pontiac region to highlight the beauty of their own backyard and the other show will be in Ottawa to reach a wider audience. We will host an artist’s evening and Fundraising Gala during the Ottawa showing. Applications for artists to participate will be open from March 1

– April 30, 2017. Applications can be found here. On May 15, 2017, we will officially announce the artists who have been selected to attend. There will be no cost to participate in the art camp, however each artist is asked to donate a completed piece. These donated works will be displayed in our art shows. Here is the link to the application form To learn more about CPAWS-OV Dumoine River Art Camp, CPAWS-OV's campaign to protect the Dumoine, or any of our upcoming events, please visit our website http://cpaws-ov-vo.org/events/summer-2017-dumoine-river-art-camp

April 11, 2017 7 – 9 pm Sandy Hill Community Centre – Conference Room 250 Somerset St. East, Ottawa

Way back and as far as I can remember as a child I always loved drawing, but my most significant art education happened in my mid-twenties when I worked at Cairo airport for KLM royal Dutch airlines, travel was free for employees and for almost five years took advantage and visited a European city almost every weekend. Visiting major museums and galleries standing in front masterpieces had a strong and lasting impact.......I must have visited the Rembrandt Museum in Amsterdam more than 20 times. I emigrated to Canada in 1964 and was fortunate enough that by

1967/68 I was teaching art at the University of Toronto Schools, a special school within the Faculty of Education U of T. Since then and starting in the 70's I had several solo and group shows and still do. Long retired am still active and live in my studio downtown Toronto. As you know there are hundreds of ways for starting a painting. And as you know, you could probably group them into three or four categories. I will briefly tackle two ways: 1) the 16th 17th century academic drawing then painting (still most popular today) and 2) the Impressionist and post-impressionist popular method of blocking first. In my demo I show how I borrow parts of each method to create the painting. What I hope to convey is a sense of adventure in painting rather than trying to reach a preconceived idea. Don will be using oils and will paint one of the audience. His methodology and thought processes will be clearly explained.
