Topic: “The Science of Climate”

By: John Henry Beyer, Ph.D., retired Geophysicist and Program Manager, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

Dr. Beyer will discuss how we, as individuals, can take action to combat the global threat of climate change - and our health, our economy, and the lives of our children and grandchildren will all benefit. He will keep the science to a minimum (even though it's compelling) and will sort out a few facts and fallacies you probably have heard about. In addition John Henry will mention one of the most serious - but least publicized - ways we are already being affected and suggest actions we can take.

Public Policy Update

By Robin Grean - all content taken from the AAUW National Website

Equal Pay Day 2019: New Progress, New Priorities

On April 2 — the symbolic day when women’s earnings

caught up to men’s from the previous year — women

everywhere made their voices heard. It was time to

take stock of progress while continuing the fight for pay

equity. On Capitol Hill, Deborah Vagins, AAUW’s Senior

Vice President of Public Policy and Research joined

legislators and advocates to encourage the Senate to

follow in the House’s footsteps and pass the Paycheck

Fairness Act.

A new AAUW poll found that 59 percent of Americans

believe the gender pay gap is due to bias rather than

women’s personal choices. “Given the national dialogue

on equity issues in the workplace, I’m confident that

we’re seeing a significant culture shift … ,” says Kim

Churches, CEO of AAUW.

Our research, programs and advocacy work were

covered by 246 media outlets, including national

publications such as Time, Money, U.S. News and World

Report and The New York Times, and radio programs in

local markets and on NPR’s Marketplace. Collectively,

we reached more than 356 million people!

Four Reasons for Optimism on the Pay Gap

AAUW CEO Kim Churches contributed an article on

MBSNC’s Know Your Value website about the role of

salary transparency in advancing equity. Here’s why

she’s feeling encouraged:

1. Secrecy policies are changing. Laws in 18 states and Washington, D.C., now ban employers from prohibiting salary discussions.

2. Workers are negotiating better. Websites like Salary.com are giving job candidates the data they need, and AAUW’s free Work Smart online course provides tips for making the task easier.

3. Employers are doing their part. More leaders are opting to share information about compensation decisions with employees — which is believed to narrow the pay gap. And companies like software and technology company SAP have made public commitments to pay equity.

4. People are talking. According to AAUW’s poll, 57 percent of Americans reported they have or would discuss their pay with coworkers

OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS’ GROUP

The Outdoor Enthusiasts’ Group gets together year

round to enjoy hiking, snowshoeing, other outdoor

activities (and good companionship!) in the beautiful

Lake Tahoe area.

For hiking and snowshoeing we meet at 9:30 AM

every Monday (weather permitting) in the lower

parking lot of the Village Church on McCourry Blvd. at

the Mt. Rose Hwy.; from there we carpool to our

trailhead. We have had a long and enjoyable

snowshoeing (and easy back country skiing) season

this year, but will be switching to hiking in May. The

Wednesday morning kayak outings will also likely

start up again sometime in May—please contact Liz

Paganelli at [email protected] if you would like to

be added to that email list.

Please contact me at [email protected] or

775-831-8608 if you would like to snowshoe/hike

with us. You will be notified by email of planned

outings as well as any last minute changes due to

weather.

We hope you can join us in the great outdoors!

COMMUNITY EVENTS & NEWS

Star Follies raised money for the Incline High School this past weekend April 25th and 26th with the help of some

AAUW members.

LOCAL STEM NEWS: The Robotics Academy of Nevada – a new statewide professional development program funded by Tesla’s K-12 Education Investment Fund – will launch this summer, facilitated by DRI’s PreK-12 STEM education and outreach program, Science Alive, in partnership with the Colleges of Engineering at Nevada’s research universities—UNR and UNLV. The Academy is comprised of two week-long teacher trainings designed to help 200 middle and high school teachers to coach robotics programs at their schools, with mentor support throughout the year. Trainings will be held on the universities’ campuses and will be taught by university faculty from the Departments of Engineering and Education, with assistance from college students. The funding of the new Robotics Academy of Nevada is part of Tesla’s $37.5 million investment in K-12 education in Nevada aimed at programs that encourage students of all backgrounds to consider a career in STEM or sustainability.
