In This Issue...

This part of the year has always been the most active for the Mobile Bar Association and this year is no exception. CLE is a big emphasis at this time of the year. You will find that a wide variety of programs will be offered between now and the end of the year allowing our members to complete all of their CLE requirements without having to travel out of town.

Reaction to the relocation of the monthly meetings to the RSA BAttle HouSe continues to be positive and we will use that location for our October and November meetings.

FAulkneR univeRSity is developing a paralegal program and we have agreed to assist Ruth RogeRs, one of our members, in gathering some information from our members that will assist Faulkner University in developing their program. If you are contacted by her in connection with a survey, please make an effort to respond.

With BarbaraBrowsing the Bar We are drawing close to the end of yet another year and the MBA “end-of-year”

inevitables are soon to start appearing on your desk – via email, snail mail or hand delivery – so, please, be on the lookout and let us hear from you. coMMittee and section chaiRs are asked to send in a year-end report in that can be passed on to the 2013 Chairs. This is a very helpful tool for continuity from year to year. Also, the coMMittee PRefeRence foRMs will go out pretty soon via email blast. It will only take a minute or two to complete and return to us – it will make it much easier for the incoming PResident, Michael uPchuRch, to assign you to the Committee or Section of your choice.

As I said in last month’s BULLETIN, it is time to be seriously thinking of those CLE hours – 12 per year including 2 hours of Ethics. The MBA has a number of excellent programs to offer before the end of the year, they are listed elsewhere in this publication. Don’t be caught short and have to sit through a program that is far from the area of law that you prefer. Call the office (433-9790) if you have any questions.

I am sure you know about PARAPRoSDokiAnS- Winston Churchill loved them. They are figures of speech in which the latter part of a sentence of phrase is surprising or unexpected, and frequently humorous. Recently a friend sent me a few – hope you enjoy them.

1. Where there’s a will, I want to be in it.2. Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.3. We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.4. War does not determine who is right – only who is left.5. Knowledge is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.6. Where there’s a will, there are relatives.7. Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.8. You’re never too old to learn something stupid.9. You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

And one more:I’m supposed to respect my elders, but it’s getting harder and harder for me to find one now!

ArchiVeS & hiStory committee

The ARcHiveS & HiStoRy coMMittee seeks to interview retired and “senior” [practiced 50 years or longer] members of the Bar Association about interesting cases and events in the Mobile legal community they have encountered. Approximately 25 such lawyers have indicated an interest in participating in this project. The Committee would like to interview and record the interviews through use of video and possibly court reporters. We are seeking volunteers who have videography equipment who would be willing to provide the equipment and personnel to operate said equipment without the payment of a fee. If you have such equipment and are willing to participate in this project, please contact Don Davis [574-6110 or [email protected] ].

Due to budgetary constraints, the new Law Library contract with Westlaw provides for three research terminals rather than four. However, WestlawNext is included in the new subscription as well as all databases previously. The Lexis contract has been renewed for four research terminals and includes LexisNexis Advance .

The Library continues to have four research terminals for legal research. Lexis is accessible on each of the four terminals and Westlaw is accessible on three of the terminals. Additionally, the Law Library has one terminal for viewing AlaCourt documents but printing is not authorized for this terminal.

On your next visit to the Law Library, you will see several changes in the location of printed material. This is to accommodate future volumes of the Southern Reporter, Federal Reporter, Federal Supplement, and Bankruptcy Reporter.

The Law Library still subscribes to the Alabama Law Review and you will find it in its usual location. However, other Law reviews have been relocated.
