President’s Corner Sandie Hollister – (360) 576-7709 or [email protected] Dear Guild members, We had a busy last few weeks leading up to our quilt show. Thanks to everyone that helped in some way – from putting up the equipment, taking in quilts, hanging quilts, judging, helping in the kitchen etc. – your help was so appreciated. The adage of “many hands make light work” was very apparent. Hats off to Lynn Czaban and Judith Phelps for their excellent leadership as quilt show chair and assistant. Our guild year is winding down, but there are still a couple of activities you can participate in. Our last guest speaker, Esterita Austin will be lecturing at the May 14

th guild meeting and then presenting a class on both Friday (May 15

th) and

Saturday, (May 16th). If interested, please contact Dianna McDowell, our program chairperson. There are just a few

Jeannie Leitner’s father passed away on April 1

st.

Sandie Hollister’s aunt died in March. She was like a second mother to Sandie. Marsha Vernon passed away in late March. She was a former member of CCQ.

Please keep these special people and their families in your thoughts and prayers. Lynn Czaban received a special ribbon for her quilt, “Vermeer Meets Fassett.” This National Quilt Association (NQA) Award of Merit included a letter to Lynn encouraging her to submit a digital picture of her quilt to be placed in a special section of the NQA website. Congratulations!

Block of the Month – May 2015 – Garden Rows (12 ½” unfinished)

Bright flowered prints may inspire us all to work in the yard. For sure, wash your hands when you come in from the garden to reach for the white-on-white your prints are paired with. ;-)

Cutting Directions

White on White

A – cut 4 - 3 ½” x 9 ½”

Bright Flowered Print

B - cut 4 – 5” x 5”, then in half diagonally

Sewing Directions

Fold A pieces in half lengthwise, crease at the cut edges, and place straight pins there to mark the centers. Fold B triangles in half and mark the centers of the bias edges with straight pins. Pin the flower triangles to the white-on-white rectangles, matching the centers (Fig. 1). Sew ¼” seams and press the seams.

The blocks are slightly oversized, so trim them all to 6 ½” square before assembling them into a block (Fig

2).

This block lends itself very well to an all-over scrappy look.

This is in recognition of the donations our members have made, as well as the work we have done to provide quilts, backpacks, teddy bears and other items for the children. If you participated in any of these activities, please consider putting this on your calendar. The picture below provides details of their location and contact information. THEY DO NEED AN RSVP so that they can be prepared for the number of people who will attend. If you do attend, you might consider car-pooling with other members to conserve parking spaces. Check out the invitation attached to this newsletter. Jane Dudley's garage is overflowing with kits our productive volunteers have put together. Please stop by the Charity table during social hour or after the meeting and take home a kit to make a quilt top for one of the organizations that we support. We also bring quilts with batting and backing ready for you to long-arm, as well as projects already quilted that just need to have the binding applied. Summer is coming, so stock up on projects for those months when you really need a quilting fix! We also want to see you at our upcoming volunteer days which are shown below. These mornings (9am till noon-ish) are the times when we accomplish the behind-the-scenes work to facilitate bringing charity projects to the guild meetings. Our volunteer days are held at the home of Jane Dudley and Judy Oakes (address in the directory). Charms and Strips—This is a fabric exchange, not a lottery!

May’s theme: Black and White Prints

It’s not too late to join us! We have been getting a wonderful assortment of fabrics this year. Cut either charms or strips or both with the following directions from quilt shop quality fabric. You can then drop them off at the table and then next month you can pick up your bag that will be filled with a variety of prints!

For Strips –cut (12) 2½ inch strips the width of the fabric.

Please cut accurately.

Place your strips in a zip-lock bag with your name and phone number on it.

For Charms— Cut 24 matching pairs (yes, that’s a total of 48 squares) of 5” squares. You can have different fabrics, or all 48 squares can be the same. Cut accurately, and no selvages or selvage holes. Please cross stack the fabric pairs for better sorting. Place your charms in a zip-lock bag with your name and phone number on it.

Fat Quarters Wilma Scott (360) 798-8049 or [email protected] Cynthia Howell (503) 706-9937 [email protected] May: Black and White Prints

Remember, a Fat Quarter is 18- by 22-inches and is of quilt shop quality. Black and White fabrics are so popular and new patterns have made them even more prized in the fabric world. Black and White has also become the “go to” fabric for framing patchwork to get that POP effect. Black and Whites have even been used in multi-colored quilts to add the small splash that brings all the blocks together in the finished product. And who hasn’t used “piano keys” at least once? Craftsy.com is a great website for quilters (or someone who enjoys multiple crafts) and offers seven free patterns for Black and White fabrics. Here is a portion of what they have to say about Black and White:

“Black and white quilting is a high-contrast approach to patchwork that lends itself to stunning designs. Simple white fabrics paired with black fabrics can give a bold, dramatic look to your patchwork. Many traditional quilt patterns also look beautiful when pieced from black and white quilting fabrics.” – Craftsy.com Below are four quilts from their free patterns. Check out the others online. No. 4 - The Classic

May is the last month for the exchange of Fat Quarters. We've had fun this year, despite the blackouts and delayed meetings. We hope you will start fresh next September with the new Fat Quarter crew and share fat quarters throughout the year. Thank you so much for tolerating my lengthy articles and thank you for your prayers for Cynthia while she recouped from surgery and a broken bone. Have fun at the June meeting, and this summer! Remember to feed the birds!

Just for Fun Quilting

Marcy began her long arm quilting career on a manually operated machine in a local quilt shop. Shortly thereafter she purchased her own Gammill and worked out of her garage but soon found herself working out of a local quilt shop. When that shop closed, Marcy opened her own LQS in 2005. The shop has 2 Gammill/Statlers along with a variety of fabric, classes, patterns, and notions. The staff is always friendly and very willing to help you with your project.

Machine Embroidery group (have an embroidery machine) meets the 2nd Thursday of the month at 1:00. This is a round table get together, problem solving, sharing of information and show & tell.

Quilt of Valor group meets on the 3rd Tuesday of the month from 10 - 4.

Applique group meets every Wednesday from 1 - 4.

Sit & Sew is every Monday from 10:30 - 5:30 - $10.00 fee and also in the evening from 6:00 - 9:00 - $5.00 fee. There is a teacher available to help you with your project, if needed, or just come in to work on your project in the company of other quilters.

Block of the Week is sent out every Wednesday via e-mail.

There is a 2 week turnaround on the long arm.
